Degree information

This programme provides specialist post-qualification training for CAMHS Service Leads within the CYP IAPT model, following the curriculum specified by the Department of Health.

Students undertake two modules to the value of 60 credits. The programme consists of two core modules, each worth 30 credits. There are no optional modules for this programme. Nor is there a large dissertation/report assessment.

Core modules - the Postgraduate Certificate in CYP IAPT Management course is divided into two core modules which run in parallel over the year.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, and is taught by leading practitioners in the field. Teaching is a combination of classes, tutorials, small group workshops, seminars and supervised project work. Assessment is through written assignments, oral assessment and a project report of 5,000-8,000 words.

This programme will be of interest to graduates or equivalent with some relevant work experience who are keen to develop a career and a recognised qualification as a mental health practitioner. Students on the course will be employed by a Primary Care Trust.

The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative seeks to deliver on the Government’s commitment to provide improved access to psychological therapies for people who require the help of mental health services. It also responds to service user’s requests for more personalised services based around their individuals needs. It aims to develop low intensity practitioners in evidence-based psychological therapy services to people with ‘common’ mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, in providing improvements in health, well-being and in maintaining people or returning people to employment and community participation. It is designed to equip students with the core skills and competencies in order to undertake this role effectively.

Career opportunities:
This programme has been informed by national policy requirements to establish a new type of practitioner within the mental health workforce in primary care. Low-intensity workers will assess and
support patients with common mental health problems (principally anxiety and depression) in the self-management of their recovery. Students will be employed as Low Intensity Workers within a Primary Care Trust and will be released to attend one day per week at LSBU for the duration of the course.

Graduate destinations

You'll be able to apply for accreditation as a Cognitive Behaviour therapist with the British Association of Behaviour and Cognitive Psychotherapists. You can use your skills as a CBT professional or join the NHS as a High Intensity Worker in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Services.

Our course also offers the chance to undertake a supervised research project which will be written up as part of your studies, and which may later be published in an appropriate academic journal. Other admission requirements

Normally applicants will be required to hold an honours degree classification 2ii or above in a cognate mental health core profession, such as nursing, psychology, occupational therapy or social work. It is expected that such candidates will have evidence of successful study at level 6 (or equivalent) within the preceding 5 years.

Careers

The Postgraduate Certificate is the formal training required as part of the student's employment as an IAPT Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner. Trainee PWPs are appointed at band 4 and upon successful completion of the programme will move to being qualified PWPs. It is anticipated that trainees will stay in these positions after completing the programme, working as a qualified PWP in an IAPT service.

Options for career development include progression to senior PWP positions, or moving into related fields such as IAPT high intensity therapy, teaching, social work and clinical psychology.

Our PGDip Psychological Intervention programme is a well-established course offering high-quality training to individuals working within psychological therapy services.

The programme addresses real-world challenges with teaching on relevant service issues, clinical presentations and input from service users themselves.

Master-classes from leaders in the field of cognitive behavioural therapy form a key component of the training curriculum, and are complemented with lectures, workshops, video role-plays, debates, trainee presentations, experiential and self-reflective sessions.

After completion of the programme, students will be qualified to deliver high-quality and NICE-compliant cognitive behavioural therapy to adults with common mental health problems, including depression and anxiety disorders.

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year.

The trainees will spend two days a week at the University, the remaining three days a week occur at their place of work where they undertake supervised clinical practice. Six block weeks will be provided across the year, at the start of each module.

TEACHING APPROACHES

The course modules are delivered across two academic semesters with attendance at the University of Surrey required on Thursday and Friday.

There are also five week-long blocks of intensive workshops during the year. In addition to regular lectures, skills-based competencies will be developed through an innovative range of learning methods including experiential workshops, debates, presentations and video role-plays.

Weekly clinical group supervision for training cases will also be provided by members of the course team. Trainees will be expected to undertake self-directed study and will have access to the University Library and online resources.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Learning takes place in both academic and clinical environments. In university you will be involved in lectures, small group work, role plays, video taped sessions and seminars. You will also be working under supervision with a client group in a primary care setting.

The course is assessed via a variety of methods. Clinical and academic work is integrated through the production of case study presentations and seminar presentations. Role plays are recorded and critiqued and clinical practice documents provide an opportunity to assess practice.

FURTHER INFORMATION

You will develop your competence in psychological clinical assessment and low-intensity CBT interventions, including behavioural activation, exposure and habituation, panic management, cognitive restructuring, sleep management, problem solving and medication concordance. The course is heavily focused upon the development of clinical skills in the IAPT approved clinical methods.

Most mental health problems are managed in primary care. Improving access to services which can effectively treat people experiencing common mental health problems will have a major impact on the health and well-being of the population. Primary care is now the cornerstone of the NHS and needs to be able to meet the growing demands placed upon it. By offering practitioners the opportunity to develop and enhance skills in low intensity interventions and guided self-help for common mental health problems this course hopes to support a work force that can effectively meet the changing needs in primary mental healthcare.

Students are responsible for gaining appropriate supervised practice and producing evidence of this. Evidence of having met the professional requirements for supervised practice is demonstrated by the submission of a supervision log, signed by the clinical supervisor, by supervisor's reference and by formal assessment of a recorded clinical session. Students must aim to have weekly external CBT supervision, and a minimum of 2 hours per calendar month whilst in practice.

Course Overview

This course provides you with the skills to asses and treat patients with brief, evidence-based psychological approaches for the treatment of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. It is part of the Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme which trains Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) for NHS employment.

The Department of Health's IAPT programme is an innovative approach to address common mental health problems. Through this course you are trained as a practitioner to help those who experience depression and anxiety through use of evidence-based psychological therapies.

Low intensity treatments employ brief, cognitive behavioural therapy approaches through use of vehicles such as guided self-help, forming part of the stepped care system recommended for depression and anxiety disorders. After meeting and assessing a patient, the practitioner supports a therapeutic intervention to help patients with their problems and/or engage with other services that will facilitate them in their recovery.

After completing this course, you are eligible to apply for Band 5 PWP posts in NHS organisations. These posts also exist in the private and voluntary sectors.

Recognition of the personal and social cost of unmet mental health need within primary care has led to a government-supported initiative to broaden access to psychological therapies, introducing the cutting-edge role of psychological wellbeing practitioners. This brings evidence-based cognitive behavioural treatments to all people who experience mild to moderate depression or anxiety.

You can study Psychological Wellbeing Practice (PWP) with us at one of two levels. Our Graduate Certificate is relevant for those without an undergraduate degree, and our Postgraduate Certificate is relevant for those who already have an undergraduate degree.

Our certificates in PWP enable you to work with people who experience common mental health problems. You will learn to use a range of protocols derived from the best evidence based practice methodologies available. The protocols are drawn from cognitive behavioural theory and utilise self-help processes to empower patients to take control of their own wellbeing needs.

You will learn the coaching and facilitation skills necessary to support this kind of self-help process and receive a full grounding in the theory underpinning these approaches. You will also learn about the service structure underpinning the IAPT initiative which you will be working in during your training.

Following training, it is usual for your employing organisation to continue your employment at Band 5. This acknowledges your qualified status. To this point all successful trainees have achieved employment within their training organisation.

PWPs may also go on to achieve senior PWP status and role after a number of years. You may also choose to extend your role into one of the new developing areas in IAPT; opportunities also exist for a small number of PWPs to become more involved in education of new practitioners. Generally PWPs stay within the role deepening their skills and competencies.

Other career development areas may be available in your particular Improving Access to Psychological Therapies services.
