It offers you the knowledge and skills needed to understand the moral reasons - social justice, fairness and anti-discrimination - and the business reasons - legitimacy and performance - for addressing gender equality, diversity and inclusion through, among others, gender mainstreaming strategies. You learn to apply academic theories to real life questions and dilemmas within organisations and society, to reflect upon the normative dimensions of debates, to design workable solutions to change organisations and to advice policy makers and management teams.
As a GEP student you will be offered an interdisciplinary education, leading to the only Master’s Degree (MSc) in Political Science with a specialisation in gender equality, diversity and inclusion in the Netherlands. The programme focuses on the role and function of gender and diversity in society, with a particular emphasis on underlying power processes in politics and society. You will study how organisations produce different structural inequalities (regarding gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class, age, disability), and how these inequalities intersect and manifest themselves in different practices. The Equality and Community Leadership programme is a unique course developed and inspired by individuals who work within communities as activists and change makers. The principle concern of the programme is the study of communities and the dynamics and tensions of human interaction within them, alongside the role of law as a vehicle of governance. It aims to focus on understanding disadvantages within communities and how inclusivity can be established, as well as, understand social inequalities and how to enhance the value of diversity and inclusion. It is developed in the context of recent legislation which requires public bodies to ‘set and publish’ equality information objectives and both theory and practice at their centre. You will critically engage with concepts and methods to uncover inequalities and offer strategies for change towards valuing diversity and social inclusion in the context of society, communities and organisations.
An academic qualification in community leadership provides an excellent and recognised foundation for a career in the field. The course is designed to prepare the student for senior positions of community leadership within the third sector, the public sector, governance and politics, and also to play a leading role on the international stage. The course provides excellent opportunities for international, national, regional, and local networking and the development of personal social capital which will serve to effectively enhance employability prospects.
The course is available part-time and includes a flexible teaching pattern. Some modules are taught in short intensive blocks of five days. Other modules adopt a blended teaching approach where lectures are delivered once per month.
This makes it possible for students that are working or live at a distance to be able to take individual modules without regular weekly attendance at the University. However, the ethos of a strong peer learning community is central to all modes of learning, regardless of being either classroom or web based.
A range of assessment methods will be used during your course. Our PGCE programme prepares you thoroughly to teach children across the primary age range, through a careful integration of University and school-based learning which draws on the expertise of our partner schools as well as University tutors. In the c36 week course you will spend approximately two-thirds of your time in school and the remainder in University, other settings and self-study. We have a strong commitment to developing positive attitudes towards the health and well-being of children and teachers in schools. This runs as a thread across the course and all trainees participate in a project to explore and develop their practice in this area, for example investigating emotional health and well-being, healthy eating, or the use of the outdoors. In the modern global world, we are aware of the importance of developing international links; since 2012, trainees have been offered the opportunity to work in Kenya for two weeks of the course, with many of them describing this as ‘life-changing’.

Through study of the globalisation of the labour market you will gain a unique insight into political and economic fluctuations, and patterns of legal and illegal human traffic worldwide. You will also learn to identify migratory patterns and their impact on diversity and community.
Leadership, Equality and Social Responsibility
Reflects upon changes within society, within which there are fewer resources and more people striving to overcome barriers such as bureaucracy, financial limitations and discrimination. Discussion over the source of new leadership who recognise the value of civic and social responsibility will take place.
Examines international human rights; who is right and what constitutes as a valid claim to rights? Debates over prisoner rights to vote, detention camps, asylum seeker issues and mistreatment of elderly people in care homes, amongst other topics will be discussed.
Citizenship and Practice
Promotion of rights, equality and citizenship lie at the heart of many voluntary organisations and NGO's. This module, examines individuals participating within their communities to help strengthen civil society and democracy to promote justice.
The dissertation provides the most exciting opportunity to focus on the area of your work that most interests you and to turn it into an extended mediation that will benefit your clients and their communities.
The sequence of the modules will be dependent on a number of factors including student numbers.
Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) comprises 60 credits, a Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) comprises 120 credits and a Masters (MSc) comprises 180 credits.

Gender studies is a multi-disciplinary field dealing intersectionally with various social and cultural dimensions.
Reflecting this, the MSc Applied Gender Studies combines interdisciplinary core courses on gender theory, feminist research and the history of feminist thought, with optional classes within a range of disciplinary traditions.

Understanding how feminist theory, research and activism has developed over time is a key element of the degree, and our core courses include visits to Glasgow Women’s Library to learn about feminist archiving and work with their original collections.

In addition to the MSc Applied Gender Studies, we also offer the MSc Applied Gender Studies (Research Methods) which is the recommended route for students intending to apply for a PhD in the Social Sciences.

The Research Placement option provides students with the opportunity to put their Gender Studies learning and research training into practice in a real-world environment.
Students conduct a piece of research according to a brief produced in consultation with the host organisation.
The course team have established links with potential placement providers - in Glasgow and beyond - from the feminist third sector and a range of organisations committed to gender equality in arts, culture and sport.
Examples of organisations we have links with include Women in Journalism, Engender, Glasgow Women’s Library, Zero Tolerance, Rape Crisis Scotland, Women’s Support Project, Scottish Football Association, The Parliament Project and the National Union of Journalists.
The core courses are delivered in weekly seminars where there is an emphasis on student participation and engagement.
On both Feminist Knowledge, Feminist Research and Feminisms – Continuity and Change, some of our classes are held at Glasgow Women’s Library.
The assessment is all in the form of coursework, with a range of assessments designed to allow students to demonstrate different research and writing skills.
All the core courses have more than one assessment point so that receiving and responding to feedback is built in to the course design. Optional modules are taught and assessed in a variety of ways.
On the Research Placement module, students will deliver their research in a form agreed in advance with the Placement provider so as to best meet their needs and provide the student with the opportunity to develop skills in delivering research in real world contexts.

This course will allow you to satisfy the entry requirements for associate membership and chartered membership (if you have relevant work experience) of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) if you take certain modules and complete an additional chapter in your dissertation.
Across the two taught semesters you’ll study core modules introducing you to the principles and concepts of HRM in different contexts. You’ll think about the economic labour market, social and cultural contexts of HRM and different patterns of people management.

You can choose to enhance your studies by taking an additional professional pathway, which enables you to gain CIPD membership alongside your degree. You’ll take specific elements as part of your studies, and also have the opportunity to attend our HRM in Practice skills development sessions.
Part of your regular timetable, these practical sessions are taught by professionals with first-hand experience of HRM in the workplace. You’ll gain insight into the challenges you’ll face as a practitioner, whilst learning the behaviours and skills needed to manage them. The Master's specialisation in Human Resource Management focuses on new insights into personnel and organisation issues. This involves, among other things, using the human resources concept and resource-based staff and organisation management. In addition, topical themes are addressed such as competence management, training management and culture management. The Master's specialisation in Human Resource Management is therefore interesting for students who want to contribute to the development and implementation of personnel management in organisations in the role of adviser, scientific researcher or staff member.

The IB programme prepares students for a position as an International Manager or an International Professional in international business. The manager or professional is able to use a scientific methodological framework to analyse developments in the international external and internal environment of MNEs by looking at management processes from a cross-cultural point of view.

Most of the students in the BAM specialisation and in the two-year European Masters in System Dynamics (of which BAM is the Nijmegen component) will find jobs at advisory bureaus or the strategic planning departments of large companies.

While governments around the world have committed themselves to fighting poverty, poverty can only be eradicated once marginalised individuals and groups experience equality, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, disabilities or age. That is why discussions on sustainable development and reversing poverty often refer to social inclusion. Development organisations and government agencies can contribute to inclusive transformation processes that improve circumstances for marginalised people and allow them to take part in society and benefit from social services and various political, social, physical and market spaces.
Youth are particularly important drivers of innovation, entrepreneurship and prosperity in developing countries and engaging them in the agricultural sector and keeping them in the rural areas should be a priority. To ensure context-specific inclusive transformation processes, development professionals and organisations need to understand and define marginalised peoples’ needs, interests, constraints and possibilities, as well as understand their roles in decision-making processes at household, economic and societal levels.
The Rural Development, Social nclusion, Gender and Youth specialisation equips students with competences needed to understand and define these contextual factors, reduce inequities and improve social and economic conditions for everyone.
By the time you graduate, you will have developed the ability to:
• identify opportunities for systemic change and to enhance opportunities and interests of youth, men and women in rural environments
• promote social inclusion and mainstream gender and other socialequity issues in rural development
• recommend changes that will bring about gender equality in organisations
• develop a personal strategy for enhancing empowerment, social inclusion, youth involvement and gender equality in your own profession and organisation.
Specialists in Rural Development, Social Inclusion, Gender and Youth contribute to inclusive transformation of social processes that improve circumstances for marginalised people to take part in society. Recognising that equal access to markets and social services, influence over decisions affecting one’s life and young people as key drivers of innovation, entrepreneurship and prosperity will increase security over livelihood and improve social economic conditions for everyone, specialists may design interdisciplinary projects to mainstream social inclusion and reduce inequities. As agents for community development, they may be managers, coordinators or consultants in a (non-)governmental organisation or in the private sector.
Our Master programmes are eligible for the Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP), formerly the Netherlands Fellowship Programme. The Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP) is targeted at professionals from selected developing countries who, after their studies in the Netherlands, will be able to further develop and strengthen the organisations at which they work.
The Master's programme Management of Development received 78 out of 100 points for its agriculture and food programme in the information guide 'Keuzegids Masters 2018' and was consequently awarded top programme status (the information guide is based on the outcome of the National Student Survey of 2017)!
