The MA in Equality and Diversity in Society is an exciting development in response to The Equality Act 2010 and global concerns regarding equality. Awareness of equality and diversity is now seen as an integral requirement of many organisations, as well as an aspiration for society as a whole.

Course Overview

There is recognition that the underlying body of knowledge and theories surrounding equality and diversity, which are directly linked to social policy, sociology and social and cultural theory, are essential in developing informed professionals. This Master's Programme will extend professional knowledge and understanding and aims to develop reflective/reflexive practitioners through an integrated set of compulsory modules. This programme will give a sound understanding of equality and diversity and its implications for society, organisations, communities, families, individuals and policy-makers.

The Master's in Equality and Diversity in Society is grounded in the quest to ‘provide an understanding of the long-term and underlying causes of disadvantage that need to be addressed by public policy’ (Equalities Review, 2007: 13). To this end, the principle of equality and inclusion is embedded within and throughout the programme. The programme recognises that philosophers, economists, and political and social theorists debate the concepts of equality and diversity from a range of different perspectives; allowing the student to explore competing interpretations of what ‘equality’ and ‘diversity’ might mean in our society. Through engaging with ‘the intellectual traditions and perspectives of the social science, students will be encouraged to explore social processes and the links between theory, policy and practice. It allows students to debate societal issues, and promote engagement with ‘new ideas …. relating to issues such as the impact of globalisation on … social justice, sustainable development, social inclusion..’

Part I comprises four taught modules which can be access through weekend taught sessions or through an online virtual learning environment or through a blended learning approach.

Part II is the dissertation component where the student will explore an aspect of equality and diversity through either an extended literature review or primary research (15,000 words).

Key Features

The public policy drive has highlighted the need for professionals who are able to understand ‘the complexities involved in social policy formation, implementation and development’ (SPA, 2007: 8). This programme has been designed both as a natural progression for BA Social Inclusion graduates, and as preparation for students who wish to enter or are already professionals working in a diverse range of fields (for example: teaching, health and/or social care, educational settings, probation service, voluntary organisations, youth support, community education, police services). It also acknowledges the Welsh Assembly Government’s vision for all teachers to be qualified to Master's level.

The programme is designed to enable students to further develop the range of skills gained at initial degree level, which transfer easily to the world of work:

It offers you the knowledge and skills needed to understand the moral reasons - social justice, fairness and anti-discrimination - and the business reasons - legitimacy and performance - for addressing gender equality, diversity and inclusion through, among others, gender mainstreaming strategies. You learn to apply academic theories to real life questions and dilemmas within organisations and society, to reflect upon the normative dimensions of debates, to design workable solutions to change organisations and to advice policy makers and management teams.

Interdisciplinary perspective

As a GEP student you will be offered an interdisciplinary education, leading to the only Master’s Degree (MSc) in Political Science with a specialisation in gender equality, diversity and inclusion in the Netherlands. The programme focuses on the role and function of gender and diversity in society, with a particular emphasis on underlying power processes in politics and society. You will study how organisations produce different structural inequalities (regarding gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class, age, disability), and how these inequalities intersect and manifest themselves in different practices. At the same time as the programme addresses questions related to the role culture, identity, leadership, and politics play in the (re-)production of gender inequalities, it also assesses the influence and strategies of different stakeholders as well as change agents in gender mainstreaming and transforming organisations. We offer state of the art theoretical insights and provide a solid training in research methods to help you design and implement organisational interventions and solve policy problems.

The Equality and Community Leadership programme is a unique course developed and inspired by individuals who work within communities as activists and change makers. The principle concern of the programme is the study of communities and the dynamics and tensions of human interaction within them, alongside the role of law as a vehicle of governance. It aims to focus on understanding disadvantages within communities and how inclusivity can be established, as well as, understand social inequalities and how to enhance the value of diversity and inclusion. It is developed in the context of recent legislation which requires public bodies to ‘set and publish’ equality information objectives and both theory and practice at their centre. You will critically engage with concepts and methods to uncover inequalities and offer strategies for change towards valuing diversity and social inclusion in the context of society, communities and organisations.

INDUSTRY LINKS

An academic qualification in community leadership provides an excellent and recognised foundation for a career in the field. The course is designed to prepare the student for senior positions of community leadership within the third sector, the public sector, governance and politics, and also to play a leading role on the international stage. The course provides excellent opportunities for international, national, regional, and local networking and the development of personal social capital which will serve to effectively enhance employability prospects.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course is available part-time and includes a flexible teaching pattern. Some modules are taught in short intensive blocks of five days. Other modules adopt a blended teaching approach where lectures are delivered once per month.

This makes it possible for students that are working or live at a distance to be able to take individual modules without regular weekly attendance at the University. However, the ethos of a strong peer learning community is central to all modes of learning, regardless of being either classroom or web based.

A range of assessment methods will be used during your course. Your skills, knowledge and understanding will be formally and informally assessed through written assignments, oral presentations and through practical tasks. The requirements and the marking criteria for all course assessments are clearly set out for you in this handbook and module handbooks. Tutors may provide additional supportive material to you.

The MA Programme in Education engages with education across the age range from early years to adulthood and is relevant to a wide diversity of educational settings. There is a strong focus on social justice and inclusion and the opportunity to reflect on your own professional practice throughout the courses.

The course offers a unique opportunity for experienced professionals to gain a practice-focused higher degree. Specialisms in Autism and SEND are also available. Individual MA modules can also be taken as Continued Professional Development (CPD). Accreditation of Prior Learning is also possible within the all the MA programmes at LSBU. If you have completed EIC and SEND options at LSBU you are a third of the way there! (APEL from other universities is also possible).

Students will gain much from working with a diverse group of peers and tutors from a wide range of educational backgrounds. The close association between the Centre for Educational Research and the MA provides opportunities to work with like-minded research-active peers within a lively and supportive learning community. Opportunities for accreditation of prior learning are available to participants with an appropriate background and this should be discussed with the admissions tutor who will also explain the CPD processes on request.

The programme's distinctive and innovative feature is its school-based character. For most participants their schools and colleges have always been the context of their study. This programme allows the work that participants do, as they write about issues of central concern to themselves and their institutions, to be properly valued. It places much importance upon the value of a professional practice approach to study at Masters level, allowing all aspects of this practice to inform and to be informed by critical reading of the literature, by theory and by relevant research.

Teaching and learning

Students also have the opportunity of benefiting from engagement with the research profile of the Education Department, with its particular expertise in global citizenship and sustainable development education, equality and inclusion, and the personal and social development of young people in schools.

You'll benefit from an up to date Virtual Learning Environment via Moodle and be actively encouraged to make use of the extensive range of support services across the university. You'll have access to a supervisor during the dissertation phase.

The programme will give you an in-depth understanding of inclusive practice, equality and diversity to prepare you for a career in London schools. As a part of the programme you will experience different schools and also have an opportunity to work in an Alternative Education Setting. At Masters level you'll have the opportunity to develop a specific area of expertise.

Bursaries

The Government provides the following bursaries to be off-set against tuition fees, via the Training Agency. Tuition fees need to be paid by all students direct to LSBU. Students can use any bursary they receive from the Training Agency for this purpose.

If you have a 1st Class Degree or a PhD you will be eligible for a bursary of £3,000

You do not need to apply for bursaries. Once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer of a place on a Teacher Training course (and supplied proof of your degree grade) the University will liaise with the Department for Education to put your bursary in place.

Teaching and learning

The university based sessions are taught through lectures, workshops, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials. The aim throughout is to encourage creativity, reflective pedagogy and sensitivity to educational issues, aims and objectives. We aim to provide a learning community that actively challenges inequality and injustice.

In particular, the module on Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context.

You will be encouraged to make links between the theoretical and practical elements of the course. We use an interactive model of teaching and learning and you will be encouraged to think critically about subjects to inform your understanding of effective methods of teaching and learning and how best to apply these in classroom situations.

Timetable

This is a full time course and you will be required to be present either in university or on school placement five days per week. University based sessions run from 9.00-4.30pm.

Days in school follow the school day timings of your particular placement school, as a guide this is usually from 8.30-4.30pm but individual schools may differ slightly.

Placements

During the course you will undertake placements in at least two schools. Placement schools are chosen to provide different experiences including size, organisation and location. Our partnership works with a wide range schools across London. Placements are allocated as best fit for each trainee, but if you live in outer London or beyond it may require careful planning by you so that you are able to work at assigned schools.

In addition you will undertake a placement in an alternative education setting. The choice of placement will depend on the option you choose and your interest in the education sector. Examples of placements include SEN schools, pupil referral units, hospitals, overseas etc.

A key element of the programme is to prepare you to work in multi-cultural, urban settings. In terms of school experience placements you will normally be required to do at least one practice in an inner or outer London state school.

Employability

Completion and employment rates for our PGCE are both above the sector norms and we have been identified as a good provider of initial teacher training (OFSTED 2014). The MA in Education - SEND is relevant to a wide variety of settings and across the age range from early years through to post compulsory education in college, university and other contexts. There is a strong focus on social justice and inclusion and the opportunity to reflect on your own professional practice throughout the courses.

MA in Education SEND is designed for people with an interest in autism and critical disability studies and for practitioners across the age range into post compulsory education. Based on the principles on 'nothing about us without us' content is informed by the experiences of people who identify personally with autism and /or SEND.

You'll develop a particular strand of interest into the dissertation and have opportunities to disseminate your findings to the work place and throughout the course. The Centre for Educational Research has a number of ongoing disability focused research projects and hosts the Disability Equality Research Network (DERN). This provides a vibrant supportive environment for your research and ensures that course content is always research-informed.

The programme will take place at LSBU (K2 Building) or in Special Educational Needs partners' schools and be delivered by academics and experts from the Special Educational Needs sector. Evening and weekend taught sessions are complemented by an extensive virtual learning environment and delivered on campus or elsewhere by arrangement. Students, wherever located, become part of diverse and stimulating LSBU community and the vibrant Centre for Education Research.

Teaching and learning

You'll be taught by Dr Nicola Martin who has substantial experience in the field of autism including working with Professor Baron-Cohen on the Cambridge University Autism Project. She was also formerly director of the Autism Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. Dr Martin is currently a lecturer at LSBU and is a Principal Investigator for Research Autism.

You'll also be taught by Gianna Knowles who has considerable experience of working with school staff to develop their Special Educational Needs Departments. Gianna has published a range of academic textbooks that support staff development in this area.

You'll benefit from an up to date Virtual Learning Environment via Moodle and be actively encouraged to make use of the extensive range of support services across the university. You'll have access to a supervisor during the dissertation phase.

Employability

MA Education Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) is designed to deepen your understanding of working with pupils /students in any educational setting, across the age range into adult education. It is therefore relevant to employment in school, college, alternative education settings and to work with disabled students at university. Content is applicable to teachers and staff in non- teaching roles, such as mentor, disability officer or learning support assistant. The content is also relevant to staff in strategic and operational leadership roles.

It is a professional and academic degree that provides an in-depth understanding of inclusive practice in education across the age range (in keeping with the 0-25 framework in the Children and Families Act 2014). The degree is relevant from early years to post-compulsory education in a wide variety of settings. The diverse requirements of learners identified with SEND and best practice to support inclusive learning and achievement will be explored. You'll be encouraged to critically engage with relevant theory and legislation contextualised and applied in practice.

This programme will contribute to your employability and the National SENco award may be a requirement of your workplace.

Students wishing to achieve promotion or develop a career in education benefit from having a higher degree. Progression from the MA to the EdD further enhances employability and promotion prospects, particularly in academia and research. Overview

Our PGCE programme prepares you thoroughly to teach children across the primary age range, through a careful integration of University and school-based learning which draws on the expertise of our partner schools as well as University tutors. In the c36 week course you will spend approximately two-thirds of your time in school and the remainder in University, other settings and self-study. Most trainee teachers will focus on ages 5-11, with some School Direct alliances offering places to train to teach ages 3-7.

Specialism

Schools are increasingly looking for teachers who can lead and support staff in a range of areas. All trainees are encouraged to take advantage of the range of opportunities we provide to personalise their PGCE so that it reflects their professional experience, personal interests and developing areas of specialism. Current options include French, Science, Storytelling, PE, Green issues, Maths leadership, computer science, children's literature and drama. 

We have a strong commitment to developing positive attitudes towards the health and well-being of children and teachers in schools. This runs as a thread across the course and all trainees participate in a project to explore and develop their practice in this area, for example investigating emotional health and well-being, healthy eating, or the use of the outdoors. In the modern global world, we are aware of the importance of developing international links; since 2012, trainees have been offered the opportunity to work in Kenya for two weeks of the course, with many of them describing this as ‘life-changing’.

For suitably-qualified applicants (i.e. a degree, good A level grade or equivalent or appropriate experience), we offer Primary Mathematics as a specialism, alongside training as a general Primary teacher. Focused university sessions, carefully selected school placements and a programme of additional experiences help you develop the specific skills needed to be a Mathematics specialist in school.

Through study of the globalisation of the labour market you will gain a unique insight into political and economic fluctuations, and patterns of legal and illegal human traffic worldwide. You will also learn to identify migratory patterns and their impact on diversity and community.

Leadership, Equality and Social Responsibility

Reflects upon changes within society, within which there are fewer resources and more people striving to overcome barriers such as bureaucracy, financial limitations and discrimination. Discussion over the source of new leadership who recognise the value of civic and social responsibility will take place.

Human Rights

Examines international human rights; who is right and what constitutes as a valid claim to rights? Debates over prisoner rights to vote, detention camps, asylum seeker issues and mistreatment of elderly people in care homes, amongst other topics will be discussed.

Citizenship and Practice

Promotion of rights, equality and citizenship lie at the heart of many voluntary organisations and NGO's. This module, examines individuals participating within their communities to help strengthen civil society and democracy to promote justice.

Masters Dissertation

The dissertation provides the most exciting opportunity to focus on the area of your work that most interests you and to turn it into an extended mediation that will benefit your clients and their communities.

The sequence of the modules will be dependent on a number of factors including student numbers.

Awards

Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) comprises 60 credits, a Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) comprises 120 credits and a Masters (MSc) comprises 180 credits.

Mode of study

The programme is delivered in a blended learning mode, that is, through distance learning on the universitys Virtual Learning Environment, GCU Learn, in combination with face to face seminars at GCUs city campus two or three times a year.

Work Based Learning generally describes learning while a person is employed. The learning is usually based on the needs of the individual's career and employer, and leads to nationally recognised qualifications.

What you’ll study

Gender studies is a multi-disciplinary field dealing intersectionally with various social and cultural dimensions.

Reflecting this, the MSc Applied Gender Studies combines interdisciplinary core courses on gender theory, feminist research and the history of feminist thought, with optional classes within a range of disciplinary traditions.

Strathclyde has particular strengths in feminist and queer approaches within Journalism and Media Studies, English Literature, History, Creative Writing, Education, Politics and International Relations, Criminology and Social Policy.

This course comprises of three core courses:

  • Understanding Gender
  • Feminist Knowledge, Feminist Research
  • Feminisms – Continuity & Change

These core modules focus on providing students with an interdisciplinary frame for the critical study of gender that is underpinned by feminist theory and acknowledges the ways in which gender informs – and is informed by – other structural inequalities.

Understanding how feminist theory, research and activism has developed over time is a key element of the degree, and our core courses include visits to Glasgow Women’s Library to learn about feminist archiving and work with their original collections.

Collectively, these courses equip students with a knowledge and understanding of key feminist debates about ontology, epistemology and methodology, and enable them to identify both commonalities and differences in the ways these debates have been taken up in different disciplinary contexts over time.

Students also take three optional courses chosen from a range of modules. These are updated annually and may include:

Research placement

The Research Placement option provides students with the opportunity to put their Gender Studies learning and research training into practice in a real-world environment.

Students conduct a piece of research according to a brief produced in consultation with the host organisation.

The course team have established links with potential placement providers - in Glasgow and beyond - from the feminist third sector and a range of organisations committed to gender equality in arts, culture and sport.

Examples of organisations we have links with include Women in Journalism, Engender, Glasgow Women’s Library, Zero Tolerance, Rape Crisis Scotland, Women’s Support Project, Scottish Football Association, The Parliament Project and the National Union of Journalists.

Learning & teaching

The core courses are delivered in weekly seminars where there is an emphasis on student participation and engagement.

On both Feminist Knowledge, Feminist Research and Feminisms – Continuity and Change, some of our classes are held at Glasgow Women’s Library.

Assessment

The assessment is all in the form of coursework, with a range of assessments designed to allow students to demonstrate different research and writing skills.

All the core courses have more than one assessment point so that receiving and responding to feedback is built in to the course design. Optional modules are taught and assessed in a variety of ways.

On the Research Placement module, students will deliver their research in a form agreed in advance with the Placement provider so as to best meet their needs and provide the student with the opportunity to develop skills in delivering research in real world contexts.

The Master's specialisation Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Management prepares you for the function of a diversity professional in public and/or private organisations. Our graduates are likely to be tasked with the development and implementation of specialized gender and diversity policies and/or diversity and inclusion programs, or can be employed in more general talent management and/or organisational change jobs. Students are trained to become critical academic professionals, and are well positioned to enter national or international management trainee programs. Other jobs, such as policy advisor, program manager, consultant or recruiter are also possible. Students with an interest in academic research have the option to pursue a PhD.

As the Master's specialisation Organisational Design and Development engages you with the construction of labour organisations, the degree offers you a career perspective as a consultant, a staff member or a researcher on redesign and change processes within organisations. The Master's specialisation in Human Resource Management focuses on new insights into personnel and organisation issues. This involves, among other things, using the human resources concept and resource-based staff and organisation management. In addition, topical themes are addressed such as competence management, training management and culture management. The Master's specialisation in Human Resource Management is therefore interesting for students who want to contribute to the development and implementation of personnel management in organisations in the role of adviser, scientific researcher or staff member.

- Career Perspective for International Business

The IB programme prepares students for a position as an International Manager or an International Professional in international business. The manager or professional is able to use a scientific methodological framework to analyse developments in the international external and internal environment of MNEs by looking at management processes from a cross-cultural point of view.

Most of the students in the BAM specialisation and in the two-year European Masters in System Dynamics (of which BAM is the Nijmegen component) will find jobs at advisory bureaus or the strategic planning departments of large companies.

Linking sustainable development to social inclusion

While governments around the world have committed themselves to fighting poverty, poverty can only be eradicated once marginalised individuals and groups experience equality, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, disabilities or age. That is why discussions on sustainable development and reversing poverty often refer to social inclusion. Development organisations and government agencies can contribute to inclusive transformation processes that improve circumstances for marginalised people and allow them to take part in society and benefit from social services and various political, social, physical and market spaces.

Youth are particularly important drivers of innovation, entrepreneurship and prosperity in developing countries and engaging them in the agricultural sector and keeping them in the rural areas should be a priority. To ensure context-specific inclusive transformation processes, development professionals and organisations need to understand and define marginalised peoples’ needs, interests, constraints and possibilities, as well as understand their roles in decision-making processes at household, economic and societal levels.

The Rural Development, Social nclusion, Gender and Youth specialisation equips students with competences needed to understand and define these contextual factors, reduce inequities and improve social and economic conditions for everyone.

Competences

By the time you graduate, you will have developed the ability to:

• identify opportunities for systemic change and to enhance opportunities and interests of youth, men and women in rural environments

• promote social inclusion and mainstream gender and other socialequity issues in rural development

• recommend changes that will bring about gender equality in organisations

• develop a personal strategy for enhancing empowerment, social inclusion, youth involvement and gender equality in your own profession and organisation.

Career opportunities

Specialists in Rural Development, Social Inclusion, Gender and Youth contribute to inclusive transformation of social processes that improve circumstances for marginalised people to take part in society. Recognising that equal access to markets and social services, influence over decisions affecting one’s life and young people as key drivers of innovation, entrepreneurship and prosperity will increase security over livelihood and improve social economic conditions for everyone, specialists may design interdisciplinary projects to mainstream social inclusion and reduce inequities. As agents for community development, they may be managers, coordinators or consultants in a (non-)governmental organisation or in the private sector.

Our Master programmes are eligible for the Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP), formerly the Netherlands Fellowship Programme. The Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP) is targeted at professionals from selected developing countries who, after their studies in the Netherlands, will be able to further develop and strengthen the organisations at which they work.
