To meet this demand, the MSc programme in Environmental Impact Assessment and Management provides an opportunity for specialist study in this area. We give you a sound knowledge of the process of EIA and related areas, including planning for environmental change and environmental law, before building upon this with more teaching on the appraisal of projects and auditing. The course aims to provide you with an understanding of theories and techniques in environmental assessment and management, in parallel with developing skills in analytical decision-making, design and project management.
The course consists of six core course units, plus one optional course unit which can be chosen from a selection of modules taught within the School of Environment, Education and Development or other related schools across the University. You also undertake a dissertation in an area of your choice to develop your analytical and research skills; engagement with case studies and practice are encouraged as part of data collection.
Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months. The part-time route is not on a day-release basis and there are no evening or weekend course units available. Therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and check the timetable to ensure that you can attend the compulsory classes. You should also seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.
We assess you through the submission of essays, reports and other work (e.g. workshop assignments), both individually and in groups. Some optional course units may involve examinations.
The taught part of the course (120 credits), is assessed by continuous assessment and formal examinations. Continuous assessment includes essays, reports, posters, oral presentations, and a major project.
A 15,000-word dissertation is prepared on an approved topic, which is discussed and chosen at the beginning of the second semester and a suitable supervisor allocated. Initial work focuses upon an overview of he chosen topic, a literature review and the design of the methodology to be adopted. During the latter part of Semester 2 and the summer vacation, you undertake the necessary research and analysis, culminating in the writing of your dissertation.
Graduates of this specialist course are fully equipped to seek employment in environmental consultancies, local authorities, utilities, environmental agencies and environmental non-governmental organisations in both the developed and developing world. The MSc course can be completed in 12 months full time with options to extend that period up to 3 years for part-time study. There is a set of 6 mandatory taught modules that underpin the essentials of environmental management followed by a choice of 2 from 6 optional modules. The optional modules allow you to focus on subjects that are either of interest to you or fundamental to career aspiration. Be it the industrial environment, ecological environment or a more technical environmental approach, options allow you to concentrate on forward planning especially with regard to your Masters thesis.
If you are more focused on issues such as contaminated land and remediation or laboratory skills in analysing soil, air and water samples then we have the modules for you. Our laboratories are furnished with state of the art computer controlled instruments allowing monitoring and analysis of most chemical pollutants encountered in the environment.
If a more ecological specialism is for you then we offer modules in Ecological Management as well as in the Regulation & Assessment of Water Pollution – both of these have practical / field work components. The Environmental Impact Assessment module combines many skills across a wide suite of environmental areas.
We also offer a module that uses Geographical Information Systems – this is a style of computerised mapping of data increasingly used in environmental applications. For this we have a dedicated specialised computer laboratory.

Designed to produce graduates sufficiently equipped to play a leading role in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of environmental policy initiatives within the environmental industries, this course will enable you to develop essential knowledge and skills to progress into a professional career in environmental management, regulation or consultancy.
You will be engaged with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental assessment and management. For the MSc, the full-time and part-time routes comprise three 14-week trimesters or five 14-week trimesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively. There are two intakes per year allowing flexibility in regards to the time you wish to begin your study (September or January).
Within the full-time course, you will study four taught modules as well as completing a dissertation. Three modules are compulsory with two studied in trimester 1 and the remaining one in trimester 2. For part-time students the taught components span two academic years each consisting of two trimesters between September and May. Year 1 involves the study of two core modules. The course emphasises the development of professional skills and capabilities supplemented by practice-based learning opportunities. You will work in a team on a project with an external client organisation to develop your research and analytical skills and to enhance your employability profile. Recent projects include an analysis of the air quality benefits of trees in urban areas (City of Trees), evaluation and enhancement of environmental management procedures for a large multinational manufacturing company, analysis of energy management measures implemented in schools for a local authority and the assessment of environmental management options for a large national charitable organisation.
You are encouraged to undertake voluntary work for which assistance is provided. The programme has links with a range of volunteering organisations including the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Groundwork organisations and the Bolton Community Development Partnership.
Full-time students also have the opportunity to work with a business on an environmental management project of relevance to the organisation as part of their dissertation. Past projects include work with E.ON UK, United Utilities, Groundwork and Manchester City Council on a range of projects including contaminated land investigation, feasibility studies of sustainable technologies for business and stakeholder perceptions of sustainable environmental practices.

MSc Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Reconstruction focuses on analysing past, present, and future dynamic environments, providing you with the skills for a career in environmental management or consultancy, and a firm grounding for research in the environmental sciences.
Concerns over the human impact on the environment have stimulated demand from governments and industry for the monitoring, analysis and modelling of natural processes in environmental systems. This is essential if we are to improve understanding of the interrelation of environmental variables in order to predict and manage their responses to anthropogenic perturbations.

We also use the proximity of Manchester to the upland areas of the Peak District; several past MSc students completed dissertation work in close collaboration with various organisations responsible for land management in the Peak District, giving their work direct policy relevance.
Teaching focuses on training in theory, concepts and research skills in the first semester, and practical applications and research experience in the second semester.
We teach course units in small-group interactive styles with a mix of lectures, tutorials, seminars, practicals and presentations. A range of physical geographers provide training in their specialised fields, covering both content and practical research methods.
In a typical week, expect to spend some time in the library, preparing for seminars; in the laboratory, completing practicals; in the dedicated postgraduate computer laboratory, or writing reports; and in the classroom.
The second semester in particular gives you increased opportunities to go out into the field, both for practicals and to gain research experience by doing field research with members of staff. We maintain an intensively monitored catchment on the moors near the Snake Pass in the Peak District and this is the focus of several practical exercises, as well as a source of data to support dissertation work.
