Programme structure

The programme has a duration of 2 years and consists of 4 semesters.

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

Information Systems Research Methods - This course focuses on the production of qualified and justified knowledge, meeting the requirements of scientific quality criteria. This is essential for any candidate in business economics, who wishes to make decisions on an informed background.

IS Development & Implementation in a Business Context - The student will be introduced to IS development and implementation in a business context. It focuses on the challenges that we face in practice and how to cope with the complexities. The course introduces a range of methods and techniques that can be used to understand, plan and execute the processes in which IS are developed, implemented, evaluated and modified, to enable the student to participate in the IS acquisition processes of the businesses.

Project Management: The Managerial Process including PRINCE2 - The aim of the course is to provide the student with knowledge about central topics related to working in projects. The course discusses several project types and relates tools and techniques and project management behaviour to different types of projects.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

An insight to Digital innovation and Business Transformation will be one of the specialisation courses. The course centres on the impact of digital technologies on society in general and modern companies in particular. More specifically, the course focuses on the potential for innovation and business transformation in new and emerging digital technologies.

Moreover, the student will be introduced to IS Strategy and Management, which is a course that aims to provide the students with an understanding of IS strategic management and how IT resources can be managed within organisations in order to create long business opportunities and benefits.

Alongside the course of IS Enterprise Architecture introduces the students to strategic and technological aspects of Enterprise Architecture. IS Enterprise Architecture is one of today’s best performing tools to enable long term strategic advantage. Enterprise Architecture provides a long-term view of a company’s processes, systems and technologies that create and support the core capabilities of organisations.

3rd semester: Electives or study abroad

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

4th semester: Final thesis

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

What you study

The course is structured to give you advanced level research skills specifically relevant to the IT discipline, together with a framework for developing your knowledge of how organisations seek to use IT for transformation and innovation.

On the course you examine the relationships between corporate strategy, business models, services and process models, performance, risk and value management, and computer technology. You discover how enterprise systems can be integrated with strategic and tactical business decision-making as well as data analytics and processing. You also learn about emergent technologies such as smart applications driven by artificial intelligence and robotic process automation.

Throughout your work, questions will emerge and you will be able to identify topics to research based on what you have studied. Further support comes from the Global University Alliance (GUA), a consortium with more than 450 academic institutions in its membership. Both LEADing Practice and the GUA work with other standards bodies such as the OMG, ISO, IEEE, CEN, and W3C. All this knowledge is uniquely brought together in this course to provide you with industry expertise and connections.

About this degree

The MArch unit system of teaching ensures that an open, diverse and critical debate is sustained by the school on what constitutes architecture, and reinforces The Bartlett's ethos that architectural knowledge and expertise is synthesised throughout the student's own projects. Much of the current work by staff and students is at the forefront of developing new intellectual and formal concepts in global architecture discourse.

As part of the process of becoming a professionally-qualified Architect in the UK, graduates are required to complete a period of supervised ‘practical training', 12 months of which (commonly referred-to as the ‘Year Out') is normally undertaken before commencing full-time academic study at Master's level. This period of practical training constitutes Year 1 of the University of Huddersfield M.Arch course.

Therefore, students who have not previously completed a satisfactory period of practical training should join the course in Year 1. Students who have already completed a satisfactory period of practical training should join the course in Year 2.

Years 2 and Year 3 of the course are design-centred and intended to enable you to explore issues of critical regionalism and tectonic expression in relation to establishing your own theoretical position, through which you will be expected to develop a high degree of sensitivity to the context within which design work is undertaken in geographical, cultural, social and technical terms.

All design projects explore applications of sustainability and encourage a wide and plural outlook appropriate for both developed and developing countries. In this global worldview, understanding of progressive theories of design and the application of advanced construction methods co-exist with concern for the implementation of sustainable technologies, awareness of regional development issues and respect for craft-based building practices.

The rationale and definition of ‘International' both builds upon the studies undertaken as part of the Architecture (International) BA(Hons) degree awarded by the University of Huddersfield and acknowledges the reality of rapidly changing architectural practice in a fast moving, global context. Our MA Interior Architecture and Design degree looks at the relationship between ‘interior design’ and ‘interior architecture’. In other words, the creativity, process and thinking of designers; with the science, knowledge, and pragmatism of architecture.

The course is aimed at students from art, design and architectural backgrounds. It offers a range of studio projects, specialist subjects and cross-disciplinary theoretical courses. The Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) prepares you for careers in systems design, planning and management, as well as knowledge and information management. As an MBIS graduate, you may find work as a business analyst, systems analyst, consultant, project leader, IT manager, information management specialist, archivist or librarian.

The MBIS caters to students from a variety of backgrounds. If you do not have previous training in IT, the course includes preparatory units that will give you the IT knowledge needed for the remainder of the course. Archives and recordkeeping

Records managers and archivists ensure that vital records of social and organisational activity are created, managed and made available to business for accountability, corporate memory, enterprise knowledge and cultural purposes. Work settings include most major private and public sector organisations, and archival institutions. Knowledge managers are concerned with developing strategies and processes for managing organisational knowledge and knowledge flows to achieve organisational goals, enhance performance and add value. A particular concern is developing an environment conducive to the creation, sharing and application of organisational knowledge, and systems that support these processes.

Business information systems studies

The general form of the course gives students the skills and knowledge to solve organisational information problems. The course caters for students who would like to be business analysts, information systems consultants and IT managers. Students will learn about information technology principles, systems analysis and design, enterprise architecture and systems, IT management and governance and project management. Students can select from a range of business information systems units to focus their studies in several areas of interest including business intelligence, user experience design and business process modelling.

Library and information science

Librarians and information specialists manage information and provide information services to clients in a wide range of contexts. They are concerned with analysing information needs, solving information problems, evaluating information sources, organising information, synthesising information into targeted information products, and training clients in the use of information products, services and systems. They work for commercial, government and community sector organisations, for information consultancies and as independent information brokers.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts, A, B and C. All students complete Part B (core studies). Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A (foundation studies) or Part C (advanced studies) or a combination of the two.

Note that if you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit.

PART A. Foundations for advanced business information systems
These units provide an introduction to information systems and business concepts, including system design and analysis as applied in professional practice. You will learn basic software programming and development concepts and database technology.

These units are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within business information systems to gain critical understanding of the theories and practice relating to information systems and business process design, IT strategy, IT governance, IT management and related issues. Your study will focus on project management as well as a choice of several areas of enterprise IT and information management practice.

PART C. Advanced practice
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work in the broad realm of business information systems.

You have two options.

The first is a minor thesis research program, consisting of a research project and a research methods training unit. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this first option.

The second option is a program of coursework involving advanced study and an Industry experience studio project.

Students completing the combined specialisation Archives and Recordkeeping/Library and Information Science complete the industry experience program.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a discipline cognate to information systems, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator.

Increasingly, the fundamental systems comprise digital architectures and networks which then embody and enable the distribution of digital content. Developed information systems are in reality socio-technical systems incorporating people, technologies and content. The course also provides a route for people with other backgrounds and experience to engage with the world of information systems. The Master of Science in Engineering programme Technology-Based Business Development is located at the Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University campus in Herning. The programme aims at educating candidates with a strong insight in engineering practices, the relationship between theory and practice and a relentless desire for generating new knowledge and technology-based business opportunities for companies.

Technological view on engineering management processes

The programme aims to produce candidates with a strong insight in engineering practice and the boundary and habitual conditions of the modern company. Students have the possibility to choose an individual technological specialisations and to collaborate with study relevant companies, for benefiting their problem-based learning. This master programme is carried out with a strong emphasis on applying theories from the courses to practice, in real life situations.

Collaboration with companies

A key point of this programme is the interaction with study relevant companies. Students are invited to identify companies and assignments of relevance to use in technology specialisations and further in thier master thesis. Field work outside of the campus in technology specialisations is encouraged upon further agreement and approval.

Programme structure

The programme has a duration of 2 years and consists of 4 semesters.

1st semester: Courses

The structure of the first semester consists of 4 courses.

Skills in developing strategies and approaches that enhance an organisation’s ability to search, select, execute and capture benefits consisting of knowledge about technological opportunities and long-term trends are taught in a Management of Technology course.

The aim of the course in Organisational Design and Human Resource Analytics is to give the student a profound understanding of how they should organise and manage to enhance performance. These skills are particularly important for students who will be managing teams or become middle managers soon after graduation. The course will be structured into two parts, covering organisation design theory and applications from personnel economics.

Student's systematic problem-based projects will be supported in Research Design in Engineering course. Key concepts for engineering research will be presented, in order to enable the students to carry out credible and reliable interventions with technology and investigations of technology in enterprises.

Finally the first semester also introduces the course inTechnology Specialisation 1. Students will train to learn and perform scientifically grounded work on the choice of a technological solution through systematic motivation, identification, combination, development and selection of technical artefacts and solutions.

2nd semester: Courses

The second semester of this Master's programme contains 3 courses.

The first course inTechnological Business Model Innovation will focus on students knowledge of new support tools and technologies for business models and business model innovation.

The fields of engineering, technology, innovation and business development will be discussed in the course in Optimisation of Engineering Processes using Numerical Approaches. The overall aim of the course is to enable the students to solve an engineering problem using the following four-step process: 1) Analyse a given problem, 2) Setting up a formal model that describes the problem, 3) Analyse the formal model of the problem and solve it and 4) Translate the formal solution into a solution to problem.

The third course the students will follow is Technology Specialisation 2. This course adds on knowledge from the Technology Spesialisation 1 course in the first semester. The student will be trained to learn and perform scientifically grounded work in one or more technological areas within product/service, production and process technology different from what was submitted in the TS1 project.

3rd semester: Elective courses

The third semester gives the students the possibility of choosing electives based on their personal interest. Electives courses in the past years contain: Energy Engineering and Innovation, Advanced Product Development, Engineering Project Management, Entrepreneurship, Engineering Modelling, Enterprise Architecture Practices, Digital Capabilities, Six Sigma Design and Innovation, Introduction to Persuasive Technology and Further project-based activities in company or technology.

The student will be allowed to choose courses worth of 30ECTS in total.

4th semester: Final thesis

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest.
