Postgraduate Diploma / MSc Programme
Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus

An exciting programme offered by:

The William Harvey Research Institute

Barts and the London School of Medicine

Designed for Higher Medical Trainees in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus, in the UK and abroad

* Part-time Distance Learning Programme
* Novel and Flexible Learning Activities
* A taught course (leading to Postgraduate Diploma from the University of London)
* An optional independent research project (leading to an MSc from the University of London)
* The programme is compatible with the JRCPTB (Joint Royal College of Physicians Training Board) syllabus in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus, in particular the aspects covered by the 'knowledge-based examination' although completion of the course does not itself form any part of the specialist accreditation process

The Postgraduate Diploma is designed as a complete curriculum in endocrinology and diabetes, both for new entrants to these fields, as well as an update and extension for those already familiar with them. The programme provides clinicians with theoretical and clinically applied aspects of their discipline, and incorporates elements of the UK specialty training curriculum for endocrinology and diabetes mellitus. It also includes aspects of the knowledge-based examination required for Royal College Certification. There is a focus on up to date developments in the field with expert opinions and presentations.

In addition, students taking the MSc complete a project on a topic to be approved by the programme organiser which is conducted at the candidate’s home institution. The project is examined in the form of written dissertation of approximately 10,000 words and a viva.

This course aims to inform and equip the practitioner with the necessary skills to function in a modern biomedical/clinical environment specialising in caring for the diabetes patient. It will be relevant to researchers, day-to-day NHS hospital and general practice.

Why Study Diabetes with us?

Our course is delivered by a research-active group of academic staff, supplemented by clinicians and biomedical scientists. You will receive training in research skills required in the interpretation of the literature and translating that into evidence based practice.

The course is mapped to The Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board Speciality Training Curriculum for Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus.

If research is your interest, successful completion of the MSc will allow you to register onto one of our PhD courses.

What will I learn?

Our course investigates in detail the different types of diabetes and various complications. You will review current guidelines and their evidence base in the therapeutic management of diabetes, and explore potential new therapies.

Seminars and tutorials will be held with various healthcare professionals and clinical researchers. You will also attend diabetes clinics in one of our partner hospital trusts.

How will I be taught?

Modules are delivered as three-day intensive courses to facilitate attendance from students in employment. Weekly support sessions and journal club supplement learning – all held in our modern facilities in Bache Hall on the Countess of Chester Hospital Campus.
Total contact hours for the whole course are 360 hours, out of a total study time of 1,800 hours.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via coursework, which may focus on case studies, clinical reviews, laboratory reports, posters or oral presentations.

The course culminates in the Research Dissertation, which is assessed through your production of two publishable scientific articles.
