The world of credit management is an extremely dynamic environment demanding ever-changing skills and knowledge base in areas such as trade, commerce and export credit, as well as related areas such as collections, credit reporting, credit insurance and insolvency practice.

The CICM course is designed for anyone wishing to move into or progress in a credit role. The Level 3 diploma course aims to provide a sound understanding of the concepts, processes and techniques that underpin best practice across a range of credit environments. All the subjects are carefully designed to cover topics that are relevant to the credit manager.

Assessment is carried out by the CICM via examinations held in January, June and October.

This is a broad based and flexible course that will enable you to pursue a range of environmental careers, from environmental specialist to a manager with an environmental remit. Alternatively the course, or modules within it, can provide valuable continuing professional development (CPD) should you be a professional wanting to refresh or expand your skills in environmental management. This can be done by taking the whole course or individual modules as stand-alone CPD items.

This course has been developed following extensive consultation with industry. Unusually, and perhaps uniquely, for an Environmental Management Master’s, you can include Business Management modules in your options; something that is seen as a real benefit by our industry partners. In addition, through choosing particular modules and assessment options, the course can be tailored to suit a range of environmental interests and therefore careers in the environmental and management sectors. For example this course will suit you if you wish to pursue a career in ecological consultancy, pollution control or environmental hazards and liabilities.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

You will study two compulsory 30 credit modules (one in each taught trimester) that will provide a detailed overview of environmental management practices, principles, tools and techniques. These will include topics such as pollution, EMS, biodiversity, environmental monitoring, GIS, environmental decision-making and communication skills.

Modules amounting to a further 30 credits are also selected in each taught trimester, from a choice of environmental management or business management topics. You must take a minimum of 30 credits in environmental management and there are four 15 credit environmental management modules available. These are focused on: ecosystem management; environment and society; applied geomorphology; and wastes, energy and pollution. Business management modules are available in topics such as: contemporary management issues; entrepreneurship; financial management; marketing; and managing people.

Finally, you will complete a 60 credit independent research project that will allow you to demonstrate your environmental understanding in an area relevant to your interests and career; from biodiversity to business. You may also elect to use an existing project related to your employment as your dissertation.

MODULES

TRIMESTER 1
You will study the following modules in Trimester 1:

Principles of Environmental Management (30 credits):
This compulsory module provides an overview of environmental management principles, tools, and legislation: including sustainability, resource management, environmental hazards and ecosystem services.

Plus optional modules totalling 30 credits:

Waste, Energy and Pollution Management (15 credits) optional:
Develop your understanding of the potential negative impacts that arise through human interactions with the environment. Key aspects will include resource use and polluting emissions, especially through our generation of waste and utilisation of energy sources. It will also enable you to appreciate the role of new technologies in alleviating such effects.

Environment and Society: Global Perspectives on Policy and Practice (15 credits) optional:
Gain a deeper, critical understanding of the human dimensions of environmental change. Develop your sense of the multi-layered and contested nature of environmental ‘problems’ and the ‘solutions’ variously proposed. A broad, interdisciplinary and critical awareness is encouraged through consideration of academic and policy literatures from different global and historical contexts.

Business Management Options:
Environmental managers often need a range of management skills, and these modules will allow you to develop some of these important skills. Modules available include: Financial Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Managing People, and Management in Practice. Management in Practice is a 30 credit module providing an excellent overview if you have no formal business training. The other modules are 15 credit modules and will allow the development of specific skills.


TRIMESTER 2
You will study the following modules in Trimester 2:

Professional Practice for Environmental Management (30 credits):
This compulsory module develops key professional skills, including: GIS, environmental risks and decision- making, survey and monitoring, sampling design, data management and analysis, reporting and communication.

Plus optional modules totalling 30 credits:

Ecosystem Management (15 credits) optional:
Modern economic theory (ecological economics) considers ecosystem sustainability as the foundation of all economic sustainability and its crucial role in underpinning business and political decisions. Hence, this module investigates the natural environment in terms of ecosystem functions and resource management, both of which can provide benefits and provide challenges for human beings and the wider environment. It also considers the extent to which we can assign economic value to nature.

Applied Geomorphology (15 credits) optional:
Develop the theoretical and practical skills to equip you to undertake integrated and applied geomorphological projects relevant to the environmental management and consultancy sectors.

Business Management Options:
From a range of management skills and specialisms (see Trimester 1 options)

TRIMESTER 3
In this trimester you complete a 60 credit research project, which will require you to research an applied environmental question. There is considerable flexibility in subject choice and the project focus will reflect your core interests, and may range from the influence of environmental issues on business decision-making, to monitoring biodiversity. This could include industry-based/work placement projects, with our industry partners.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

Teaching is a mix of lectures, seminars, small tutor groups, practical/field work sessions and online/desk- based study.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The dependence of economic sustainability and social wellbeing on a sustainable natural environment is now accepted, and through several international agreements, Governments across the world have acknowledged the urgent need to secure environmental sustainability. The need for well- informed Environmental Managers has therefore never been greater. This means managers who not only understand the environment, but also understand its importance to economic and social well being.

This Master’s will provide you with the expertise, practical skills and confidence to pursue specialist careers in environmental management, environmental consultancy or ecology and provide crucial environmental understanding for successful careers in local government, the civil service, engineering, planning or business.

A range of assessment methods are used, all with a strong emphasis on applying the skills you learn during your course to workplace scenarios. General route

If you choose options which result in you not having studied three courses from a particular specialism, or if the dissertation is in a different subject from the optional course taken, you will graduate with an MSc in Management.

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track.
Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Dissertation track

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

Practice track

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

Unilever to present Case Week Project

The world-leading fast-moving consumer goods company, Unilever, represented by Tony Dunnage, Group Environmental Manager for Unilever, will present a business problem to practice track students on 15 June as part of Case Week.

You will then have two weeks to propose your own solutions to the problem, using the skills and knowledge gained during the programme, under guidance from your supervisors. The week will culminate with poster presentations to Unilever on 26 June.

Programme outline

The MSc International Management programme is a full-time degree studied over a period of calendar year commencing late September and a part-time degree can be studied over a period of between 2 and 4 years. In each case participants take taught modules and prepare a dissertation. Students without the relevant English proficiency are required to do a Summer pre-sessional programme before gaining entry onto the postgraduate programme.

Classes are in the form of either two or three hour teaching/learning sessions. This includes some small group teaching.

The structure of the MSc International Management programme is modular, with individual modules each having weighting of 15 credits. One credit represents 10 hours of student work. This, means that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study including formal teaching, independent study, revision, and the preparation of assessments. The MSc International Management degree requires the successful completion of 180 credits, 120 of which are taught modules, and 60 a Management dissertation.

All students undertake core and elective modules relating to a wide range of management disciplines. Elective modules offer a choice of electives that allow the student to focus upon advanced management most closely associated with his/her career aspirations.

The programme begins with a two week foundation module to bring all students up to a common minimum standard in management and business statistics. The foundation module also introduces students to important learning resources within the University (e.g. the library and study skills support) and starts the process of encouraging student to work in 'teams' and to see their fellow students as an important learning resource over and above the resources available at the University.

There are six core management modules including a management report that are compulsory for all six pathways. The compulsory core management modules are:

All modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and final assessment held at the end of each Semester with re-sit opportunity shortly thereafter. Coursework may account for as much as 40-50% of the overall degree. Coursework is an integral part of the assessment process. Dissertation

During the final three months of the degree you will produce a dissertation. This is an independent, practice-oriented research project associated with developing an initial business idea into a viable business model. The business idea to be developed as part of the dissertation project may be chosen in four different settings: (1) independent venture; (2) corporate venture (i.e. an entrepreneurial effort by an existing company); (3) family venture (i.e. an entrepreneurial effort by a family business); (4) social venture (i.e. entrepreneurial effort in pursuit of a social mission).

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including assignments, exams, presentations, reports and exercises. The dissertation consists of a 10-15,000 word extended piece of individual research, supervised by a member of faculty.

Year 1

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course will be delivered through a mixture of lectures, group work, practical sessions and distance learning via the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment.

Postgraduate programme within the School operate on a semesterised basis with 140 credits of taught modules being delivered over two teaching semesters.

Modules are led by experienced members of staff and, in some instances, professional practitioners from industry and for each 20 credit module students will normally have:
48 hours of face to face contact and 152 hours of self –managed (tutor directed) learning.

We are a Registered Education Provider – Global Provider – with the Project Management Institute (PMI) the largest project Management professional body in the world. Students will have the opportunity to attend PMI meetings and events locally and nationally and to develop their own personal professional networks and contacts. We also work closely with Agile South Wales who encourage professional contact at events and have input to course teaching.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used including individual coursework, presentations, group practical assessment and debates. Extensive project management resources are available in the library and via the electronic catalogue as well as curated by individual tutors and made available through Moodle, the university virtual learning environment.

International Strategic Management: This module analyses strategic decision-making within business. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes of business management, the interconnections with the functional domains of marketing, human resource management and corporate finance, and the management of knowledge systems.

International Financial Markets: This module provides an overview of financial instruments in a multi-currency world, taking account of insights from portfolio theory concerning the relationship between risk and return, the diversification of risk, and the pricing of assets.

International Financial Management: In this module the financial management of multinational companies and the influence of macroeconomic, fiscal, currency and political environments on business and financial decision-making are examined in an international and global context.

New Venture Creation: This module examines the advantages and disadvantages of the various routes to business start-up, including new venture creation, or establishing a business based on your own expertise, experience and ideas; buying an established business; purchasing a franchise; and succession through a family firm, an increasingly common way of becoming involved in entrepreneurial activity.

Islamic Finance: This module provides an insight into topical issues relating to Islamic financial instruments and related risk management issues. The first part of the module examines issues relating to financial contracting, instruments and various intermediation issues. The second part focuses on the role of the capital market in providing Islamic financing, and highlights financial engineering and risk management features of this type of business.

Knowledge Management: This module examines the processes whereby organisations and individuals develop and utilise their knowledge bases. Successful knowledge management hinges on people, culture and technology. As such it has professional and academic links with organisational behaviour and organisational learning.

Contemporary Issues in Management: This module develops several theories and concepts in contemporary management theory and practice. It provides a detailed and critical analysis of management, further developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

Financial Analysis: This module analyses the techniques that are used to evaluate a company’s financial position and performance. You will examine the principles underlying inter-firm comparison (comparing the performance of one firm with another) and trend analysis (comparing the performance of the same firm over different periods).

Investment Strategy and Portfolio Management: This module evaluates the development of investment strategies for bonds, equities and derivatives that are designed to achieve optimal risk-return outcomes, and examines the measurement and evaluation of the performance of a portfolio of investments.

Public Sector Management: This module identifies the distinctive characteristics of the public sector in a competitive market-driven environment. Organisational forms in the public sector are reviewed, in the light of the changing culture of public services, competition, best value and public expectations.

Behavioural Finance: This module provides in-depth coverage of behavioural finance, which replaces the "rationality" assumption with behavioural biases that have been documented by psychologists.

A 4000 word applied assignment critically examines a leadership scenario which explores how the theories can be applied and what lessons can be learned in order to develop your leadership practice.

The Advanced Engineering Management Programme (AEMP) is delivered jointly by Birmingham Business School (BBS) and the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), combining the expertise and strengths of both schools to offer a high quality, distinctive and flexible course.

The programme introduces students to core management concepts in semester one before selecting one of four specialist pathways in semester two. Students also have the opportunity to choose a mixed pathway route, tailoring the course to their requirements.

The Construction Management pathway provides advanced training to graduates to develop their construction management skills enabling them to play leading roles in a professional capacity in both the civil engineering and building industries. The skills gained will provide them with ability to respond to changing requirements of the construction industry in both the UK and overseas. The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and individual projects.

This programme addresses management in the construction industry in its widest sense. The purpose is to provide advanced training to graduates aspiring to higher or middle management positions in the civil engineering and building industries. It addresses the working of those organisations, as well as disciplines and techniques of practical use in the management and implementation of all stages of construction and civil engineering projects. This opens up a wide range of career opportunities, as many of the techniques are applicable both within and outside the construction industry.

The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project.

Semester one modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School (BBS), the management content is research led, drawing on the expertise and reputation of BBS to help deliver a high-quality experience for students. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management.

Semester two sees students move into a pathway of their choice, where the key management concepts tackled in the first semester will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links.

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester one and then to demonstrate their application in semester two before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Engineering Management topic via a 60 credit research project.

The home of Birmingham Business School is University House, conveniently situated on the edge of the main campus opposite the main gate of the University. This course addresses key issues in the field of expatriate management, including an understanding of the theories and concepts from the developing field of expatriate management; applying a multi-disciplinary approach that draws on cultural theory and psychology, organisational behaviour, human resource management and management theory.

The course is delivered by experts in the field of expatriate management.

This course enhances participants’ practical work experience and their career prospects through the requirement to engage in the production of an expatriate management work-based project proposal. This presents an extremely valuable opportunity to engage in real-world practical research, framed by academic thinking, thus developing participants’ competencies in a business environment.

This course also offers the opportunity to engage with experts from the fields of tax, social security, pensions and visas who will be involved in class-based delivery of teaching and learning.

The first module entitled Expatriate Management: Theory and Practiceaims to provide learners with an understanding of this complex area of expatriate management and of the importance of new developments in the employment field. It will enable learners to keep abreast of new developments and to critically analyse and evaluate the implications for employment practice.

It will be assessed by a piece of coursework that integrates and ensures coverage of the module’s learning outcomes The module is assessed by 100% coursework.

The second module entitled Developing a Project Proposal for Expatriate Management will be assessed by two pieces of coursework. The first will comprise a research proposal (approx. 1,000 words) to be submitted on-line in week 5. The second assessment will comprise anExpatriate Management project proposal and reflection (approx. 4,000 words). This will be submitted on-line in week 15.

Modular structure

The course comprises two 20 credit modules set at level 7. In summary: Module 1 is delivered as a face-to-face delivery block of 5 full days (6 hours per day); module 2 is delivered as 4 full days face-to-face tuition + 1 day of cohort project tutoring by distance learning (total 10 days delivery = 30 hours + 15 hours for scheduled assessment periods) = 45 hours per module.

The first module is entitled Expatriate Management: Theory and Practiceand the module aims to provide learners with an understanding of this complex area of expatriate management and developments in the HR field. It will enable learners to keep abreast of current developments and to critically analyse the issues and evaluate the implications for employment practice.

Students then have the remainder of the 15 week semester to complete the integrative coursework assessment remotely.

The second module is entitled Developing a Project Proposal for Expatriate Management. Its face-to-face content is also delivered at the beginning of the course (in the first semester of study) as part of the block delivery in London with four days devoted to tuition. Students then continue their tuition remotely via distance-learning tutorials during their second semester of study with one day’s remote cohort tutoring provided to support their project proposal development.

After the course

This course is aimed at middle management professionals and technical specialists who are already working in the International HRM/global mobility industry who have an interest in expatriate management.
