More about this course

The course is a full-time, intensive face-to-face course running from the end of May to mid-to-late August. The course consists of whole group communicative language classes, supplemented by a mixed programme of films, small group conversation classes, cultural input and tutorials.

Integrated self-study, including London Metropolitan University's own online French programmes and virtual learning environment, will be a vital component of the course. You'll be expected to undertake 15 hours a week on this.

There is continuous assessment throughout the course.

To successfully complete the course you must:
-Attend fully and punctually
-Complete all self-study tasks set (including a weekly extended writing task)
-Complete in-class progress tests and end-of-course skills tests
-Compile a portfolio of work showing progress throughout the course and evidence of independent learning

By doing the above, students should aim to demonstrate CEFR B1/B2 (target level) in all four skills by the end of the course.

Modular structure

This is a full-time, intensive, face-to-face 12-week course running from end of May to late August, Monday to Friday, 10am-3.30pm.

The course consists of whole group communicative language classes (morning), supplemented by a mixed afternoon programme of films, small group conversation classes, cultural input and tutorials, as well as self-study.

Language level: Progression from CEFR A1/A2 to B1/B2.

After the course

Students are all expected to proceed to ITT and subsequent teaching careers in Secondary Modern Foreign Languages (MFL).

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

Who is it for?

This course is well suited for anyone who wants to become a solicitor whatever area of law they are interested in. There is a rich blend of students on the course with a variety of backgrounds and interests.

There are students from a number of jurisdictions many of whom will have experience of working in practice. Most students will have a upper second class honours degree or have performed well on the Graduate Diploma in Law. A high standard of work is therefore expected and achieved.

Objectives

This postgraduate Legal Practice Course is a practical course which will give you a strong foundation for a future career in the law. This is reflected in the skills based, transactional nature of the course.

You will work on a series of client files which will be similar to the cases dealt with in a solicitor’s office. The law school’s experienced staff will guide you through the different tasks that would have to be undertaken to advance the client’s case. Your approach to the course will therefore be very different to the one experienced in an academic law course. You will have to apply knowledge in a way that best serves the client’s interests.

The course is very interactive. You will learn by performing tasks relating to the case studies that you are given. These include drafting legal documents, preparing letters of advice or delivering a submission at court. At the end of the course you will therefore be well prepared for your career in the law.

Academic facilities

The course is delivered at the Gray’s Inn Place campus in the heart of legal London. The campus has a specific professional programmes library and all the classrooms have been designed to meet the requirements of the professional law courses.

There is a dedicated LPC suite of classrooms which also includes lockers and a resources room specifically for LPC students. The building which houses the LPC suite also has 10 video rooms where students can practice performances in the oral skills.

Placements

There are no placements as part of the course. However, students will be able to take advantage of the many pro bono opportunities that the law school offers. These include advice clinics, court based projects and schemes which offer the opportunity to work abroad. The City Law School also has links with a wide variety of organisations who can offer opportunities to volunteer with them.

The law school is often approached by firms offering internships to students.

Teaching and learning

One of the strong features of the LPC at City is the level of support students receive. All of the tutors on the course are solicitors, some of whom have worked as partners in their previous firms. They are supported by occasional sessions delivered by practitioners or visiting academics who are experts in their particular fields.

The course is structured in a way that allows you to gain maximum benefit from the experience that tutors have. Students therefore get a high level of face to face contact time with tutors.

This is reinforced by the size of the groups. For the workshops students will be in a group which has a maximum of 16 students. This group will then split into two for the skills sessions which have a maximum of eight students. This allows more time for students to get guidance from tutors.

These smaller sessions are underpinned by the large groups. All students will attend these sessions which give an overview of the area being studied.

Assessment

The assessment regime for the course has to meet the SRA’s requirements. This means that the Core Practice Areas, Electives and Professional Conduct and Regulation (including Solicitors Accounts) are assessed by means of a written examination.

The Course Skills are assessed in the context of the Core Practice Areas and Wills in a manner that is appropriate to the individual skill. For example, you will have to conduct a filmed interview with an actor as your client, make a filmed court submission, draft a legal document or prepare a letter of advice for a client.

Our assessments are open book and therefore test your application of the law rather than your memory.

Modules

The course begins with a two week Foundation when you will have classes every day. This will introduce you the Course Skills and the more practical approach that we take to studying the law. The course is then divided into two stages.

In stage one you will study the core modules. During this stage you will attend four days a week. You will normally have three one and half hour sessions a day amounting to 16 – 18 hours a week.

In stage two, you will study three elective modules. Your timetable will depend on the electives that you choose. You will have around 13.5 – 15 hours of classes a week during this stage.

Stage one - in Stage one you have to complete nine compulsory modules as follows:
-Core Practice Areas
-Course Skills
-Professional Conduct and Regulation
-Wills and the Administration of Estates

Stage two - during Stage two of the course you will study your electives. In order to complete the LPC you must pass three electives. You can take your electives at more than one provider and you can take your electives at providers other than City. You should, however, be aware that it might be more expensive for you to do this. You will choose your electives in November/December after having received guidance from the tutors about your choice. You will have to opt for either a commercial or general practice route although the bulk of the electives are open to all students. All students can choose from the following electives:
-Advanced civil litigation (10 credits)
-Commercial dispute resolution
-Commercial law (10 credits)
-Employment law (10 credits)
-Media law (10 credits)

If you take the commercial route you can also opt for Equity Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions. You will not be able to choose options on the general practice route. On the general practice route you can opt for Family or Private Client but will not be able to take options from the commercial route.

Career prospects

This course is designed to prepare you for life as a trainee solicitor.

Many applicants will not have a training contract when they start the course. The law school offers the bespoke Training Contract Advisory Service (TCAS). This is run by members of the team who were partners in their firms and so know what employers are looking for.

TCAS offers assistance with CV’s, covering letters, selection days and other matters relating to a search for a traineeship. In particular, students can arrange a mock interview with a member of the team. The support offered has allowed graduates to go into a wide variety of firms. These include commercial and high street firms both within and outside London.

We do retain links with our alumni some of whom assist us with the course in a variety of ways. In particular, we have a mentor scheme which involves previous students and members of the profession more generally. The mentors are able to give you guidance on your career.

Some graduates will also go on to further study or use the skills and knowledge acquired in areas outside of the law.

To address this aspect of pro bono work, Swansea Legal Practice Course (LPC) students have set up a Streetlaw programme.

Under this scheme Legal Practice Course (LPC) students supported by their tutors, work with schools and community groups to identify legal concerns. The students then research the relevant material and ultimately present their findings to the partner groups in a user-friendly form. The course is led by Loyd Price, Head of Animation at Aardman (Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Flushed Away, Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists and Nightmare Before Christmas) and taught by Inez Woldman (Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Morph, Creature Comforts) with the aim of bridging the gap between education and industry and enabling students to develop the core practical skills needed to become competent professional animators and to create believable characters through acting and performance.

The course has an incredibly successful track record with over 80% of graduates now working in the industry at Aardman and at studios such as Animortal, Factory Transmedia, Blue Zoo, Isle of Dogs and Traveller’s Tales. The course is open to both CG (Maya) and Stop Frame with a maximum of six students in each discipline. Course fees are £4500 which include free lunches and a two week paid internship in Industry after graduation.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course will take place at Aardman’s studio in Bristol and will be taught by practicing Aardman animators who have worked on many productions including Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, Flushed Away, The Pirates! and the Shaun the Sheep Movie. There will also be additional support from other industry professionals from both the stop frame and CG animation disciplines including Factory Transmedia who we are delighted to announce will be formally supporting the course this year.

The course is short but very intensive with the main aim being to produce students with the level of animation skills needed to allow them to get jobs as animators within this competitive industry. While this is no guarantee of future success, to date over 80% of former students have become animators within the industry.

The course is open to a maximum of 6 Stop Frame and 6 CG students, with the students working in either CG (using Maya) or Stop Frame (using Dragon-Frame). Students will be taught in small groups to enable maximum contact time with staff and other visiting tutors. The course will be taught in a series of weekly assignments, each focusing on a key aspect of animation performance. Students will be encouraged to repeat and finesse each assignment during the week. The course will be based on learning technical and practical skills, providing a foundation on which students can become technically proficient animators and thereby enable them to bring their characters to life. The course is structured to build from simpler exercises towards a short sequence demonstrating character-based performance, which will be animated within scheduled production deadlines.

The course runs from 9.30 – 6pm Monday to Friday. The course fee also includes free weekday lunches and a two week paid placement after graduation in a studio in the U.K. Past placements have included Factory Transmedia, Blue Zoo, Animortal, Isle of Dogs – Wes Anderson Feature, Aardman, JellyFish, and Travellers Tales.

On completion of the course students will:
-Have improved technical animation skills
-Be able to deliver convincing character acting and performance
-Produce their work to a deadline
-Understand the role of an animator with a production
-Have benefited from masterclasses with key industry professionals
-Have completed an industry placement

CURRICULUM

This is a 12 week full time intensive and practical course based at the Aardman studio’s in Bristol. The majority of the course is practical with students working on animation exercises to improve their skills, knowledge and experience.

Initially the course will focus on the core animation skills to ensure that students understand the key animation principles such as timing, weight and lines of action. These technical aspects of animation underpin character performance and are essential to enable students to achieve convincing performance.

Further character-based performance exercises increase the understanding of Character Posing, Blocking and Plotting the action within the shot or sequence. Each exercise builds on what has been learned in the previous week and students will have the opportunity to video themselves acting out variations of the exercises to guide and inform their work.

The course culminates in a short character animation sequence - pre-planned and boarded to showcase the skills learnt during the course. This sequence will be created within the parameters of a realistic production schedule and will reflect the pressures of a live production.

To complement the intensive animation training, students will have life drawing sessions, acting workshops as well as industry masterclasses. These give the students invaluable contacts within the industry moving forwards, as well as tips on how to promote yourself and the soft skills needed within a competitive industry. Past speakers have included companies such as Blue Zoo, Lupus, Jellyfish, Passion Pictures, Factory Transmedia, Turner, Richard Williams, Nick Park, MPC, DNeg and Dreamworks.

The course finishes with a graduation screening which is open to industry, giving students the platform to show their work and network with future employers.

Following on from the course we are aiming to secure a small number of paid internships with production companies based here in the UK. On previous courses these internships have taken place at companies such as Factory Transmedia, Blue Zoo as well as at Aardman. In many cases these placements then led to the students being offered jobs as animators.

More about this course

The course will cover higher level GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics. There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Statistics, Euclidean Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy.

We will use mathematics materials which are commonly used in classrooms to promote interactive engagement in mathematics including group work and extensive use of ICT. The course will include an introduction to relevant themes in teaching and learning which will also develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. There will be a two week school placement where you will have an opportunity to observe and participate in classroom mathematics.

The course will be assessed by a continuous assessment portfolio and a final examination. The portfolio will include mathematical tasks, written assignments, a profile of the school placement and work designed to practice specific areas of the curriculum. The final examination will include a GCSE Higher Mathematics paper (calculator and non-calculator papers) and a paper of relevant questions of A-level standard.

Professional accreditation

The course is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), and London Met is approved to provide SKE with NCTL funding for either maths or French.

Modular structure

The twelve-week course will be based at the University for four days each week Tuesday to Friday, with the exception of a two week placement in schools which will be arranged for you. You will be following a course which focusses on the content of higher GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Euclidean Statistics, and Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy. You will learn mathematics in a variety of ways including mathematics software, group work and by following targets tailored to your own needs. Learning mathematics in these ways will give you first-hand experience of the pedagogies which you will use in the PGCE course. The school placement will give you the chance to see mathematics teaching in a school and you will, by completing specially designed evaluation tasks, develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. Throughout the course there will be regular tutorials to monitor your progress and provide help and guidance to make the London Met maths enhancement course a successful first step in your teaching career.

Funding

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses (SKEs) are 12 weeks long. Your fees are paid by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). In addition, you will receive a bursary of £2,400 or £800 per month. More information on Enhancement Courses is available from the DfE.

Course structure

This is a part-time course and the modules are delivered at different times throughout the year. The course is delivered in a variety of ways, and is flexible enough to meet the needs of part-time students. Delivery is typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, and workbooks for work-based learning.

Each module has approximately 30 hours' lecturer contact and approximately 170 hours of individual study. Individual modules employ varying learning and teaching strategies.

Alongside your choice of education modules which make up the PGCert, you will choose a further two modules from our Postgraduate Education Framework and earn the full MSc by completing the dissertation, which will normally have an education component. The LLM is an optional qualification additional to your Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies. To obtain the LLM you must successfully complete a supervised 15,000 word dissertation for which preparation has already been undertaken by your successful completion of the project module forming part of the programme leading to the PgDip Legal Studies plus CPE. The Masters dissertation is usually submitted in the semester following completion of the PgDip Legal Studies plus CPE. You'll not be required to attend classes when researching and writing your dissertation and you'll therefore be able to enrol on the Legal Practice Course or Bar Professional Training Course in the September following the successful completion of the PgDip in Legal Studies.

You’ll study

The programme is made up of three modules:

School placement

School placements are central to your course and provide a focus for all other course modules.

The National Guidelines for Teacher Education Courses require you to spend a minimum of 18 weeks or equivalent in schools and to show that you meet the benchmarks for the Standards for Provisional Registration.

You’re required to attend the placement school throughout the full working day. You’re also required to attend school on staff in-service days, unless specifically requested by the school not to do so.

The placement school provides opportunities to work with colleagues. Team work is an essential part of that experience

What you will study

This part-time course centres around spending 15 Wednesdays in university, starting in February. The days in university are varied and include lectures, discussions, practical activities and where appropriate informal tutorials.In addition, you will complete 10 days or equivalent working in schools, in either a voluntarily or paid position.

The course serves to deliver the necessary components for teachers who have been out of teaching for five years or more, to be able to apply to the GTCW to return to the profession. Without some training of this kind teachers who have been out of the profession for this length of time are not able to return. Therefore an already popular course is becoming even more so.

The course covers all National Curriculum subjects in the context of the classroom and will include an emphasis on the Foundation Phase in Wales and its seven areas of learning. Issues of assessment, management and resourcing are discussed as an integral part of these studies, and the course provides an opportunity to explore recent and relevant changes and innovations. It is structured to provide plenty of practical experience supported by the relevant theory.

In addition to attending lectures and placement, you will benefit from professional guidance and support on making job applications, writing a curriculum vitae and interview techniques.

Work and Study Placements

You will complete 10 days or equivalent working in schools, in either a voluntarily or paid position, in addition to the 15 days in university. The classroom experience is undertaken as an opportunity to develop confidence, skills and understanding.

This part of the programme must be arranged by you and may be tailored to suit individual requirements. To complete the course successfully a pass in the assignment is required. The assignment is a reflective log based upon the ten days in school.

Learning and teaching methods

The University Certificate Returning and Supply Teachers course runs one day a week, currently on a Wednesday, for fifteen weeks beginning in February. Each session covers a National Curriculum subject of learning or another important theme.

The days are varied and involve a range of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, discussions, workshops, practical activities, directed and independent learning, and where appropriate informal tutorials.

Assessment methods

Assessment is 100% coursework and includes one assignment, which involves the recording of a reflective school diary based on the ten days spent in the primary school of your choice, in order to obtain maximum advantage from the classroom experience.

Course content

The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is unique in that it aims to provide the opportunity to acquire and/or enhance technical skills within the subject of leather technology. Students will study within an environment that encourages the development of intellectual creativity as well as providing transferable skills to undertake research with respect to advanced technologies, developing skills and flexibility necessary to discriminate between technical and entrepreneurial issues and relating these to the needs of the leather industry such as successful management of the commercial operations.

This course offers students the opportunity to work and learn in a state-of-the-art teaching tannery for some of the modules, and will also be working with staff with a mix of academic and industrial experience. Many of the staff carry out research in various leather subjects and over the last 20 years Northampton leather research has built a leading world-wide reputation.

Industry leaders are frequent visitors to meet students and provide knowledge on current technical and commercial aspects of leather and its fascinating chain from farm to fashion or one of its many other end uses.

The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is delivered to meet student flexibility. In order for you to complete Master’s level qualification, you must complete up to seven modules and an independent research dissertation. During the course, you will complete six compulsory modules and choose up to two optional modules. This ensures that you have a basic understanding of principles pertinent to the leather industry with an added advantage in that you are able tailor the course to meet your particular needs and career aspirations.

The Professional Skills Course (PSC) provides training in the practical skills you will need as you progress in your role as a trainee solicitor. The PSC course at UWE Bristol is accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). The SRA requires that all trainee solicitors complete this skills-based course before becoming qualified, and determines the content of the compulsory core modules on the course.

Course detail

This is a compulsory skills-based course that the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) requires you to complete before your admission as a solicitor. Building on the foundations laid in the Legal Practice Course, the course includes 12 days of training in total, which you will usually complete during your two-year period of recognised training.

UWE Bristol is the main provider of PSC training in the West of England with over 19 years' experience of running the course. You will be taught by experienced university tutors, who have worked as solicitors for many years themselves and specialise in PSC training.

The course has been designed by industry practitioners to ensure it meets the needs of both trainees and their firms and includes visiting speakers from many local and regional law firms. You will also have the opportunity to prepare and present a trial in a realistic courtroom environment.

Structure

12 days’ attendance in total, spread throughout the year (usually year 1 of the training contract). Courses run throughout the year in Bristol and Exeter. Each day runs from 09.30- 17.00. There is also a Fast Track course enabling you to complete all 3 Core Modules in one go which runs through late July/ early August.

Format

Delivered as a face-to-face course to allow for greater debate and discussion, you will leave armed with renewed confidence in your role, well equipped with the knowledge and skills you need on your journey towards becoming qualified.

The PSC course is highly interactive, with plenty of classroom discussion, group work and opportunities to use your skills and reflect on your practice. As well as industry talks, you will have the chance to prepare and present a trial in a realistic courtroom environment. This exercise is recorded for future analysis.

You will need to attend 12 days of training in total to complete the course. You can choose to do the modules in whichever order you like, although it is advisable to complete the compulsory core modules first before going on to your electives.

The course is run by experienced lawyers and teachers, drawn from the Bristol Institute of Legal Practice, Bristol Business School and legal practice.

Assessment

The only formal assessment on the course occurs in the Financial and Business Skills module, where you will need to sit a 90-minute unseen 'open book' examination on day three. For the other modules, there is no formal assessment but you will be expected to participate fully and will receive feedback on your performance during each module. You may also need to do some preparatory work in between sessions.

The results of your Financial & Business Skills exam and your attendance on all other modules will only be confirmed to you after our exam board. These occur four times per year and not always immediately after your modules. Please ensure that you check when booking modules so that you are aware of wheo re-sit the Financial & Busin you will be able to complete and obtain your certificate. For example, if you arerequired to re-sit the Financial & Business Skills exam this may impact upon your anticipated completion date.

You will need to have completed the requirements of the PSC before applying for admission as a solicitor.

The LLM Legal Practice course incorporates the Solicitors Regulation Authority requirements of the Lega Practice Course (the LPC). The course not only bridges the gap between the academic study of law and the vocational stages of training, but also incorporates a masters level qualification.

In order to obtain a Masters, students are also required to complete either a dissertation, a live project or a placement. Following successful completion of the course, you will then need to undertake a two year vocational training contract to be able to practice as a solicitor.

Course Structure

The LLM Legal Practice is a demanding course and is a leap forward from your undergraduate study. The emphasis of the LPC element of the course is much more on the practical aspects of law and the aim of the course is to ensure you can enter practice with the skills and knowledge required to hit the ground running. You will be expected to keep up with background reading and class preparation and should expect to treat the course as if you were already handling a client’s case.

The Masters element of the course allows students undertake a piece of disciplinary relevant research at Masters level, which will take the form of either a dissertation, a live project or a placement.

How you learn

The LPC elements of the course are taught face to face. Classes on the full-time course run from Mondays to Wednesdays from 9am to 5pm. Classes on the part-time course run on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6pm over two years.

The compulsory subjects and skills taught on the LPC section are prescribed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Each subject is introduced with a summary lecture providing guidance on difficult topics relating law to practice. The focus of learning is on small group teaching sessions, in the form of interactive workshops that enable you to explore key areas of law and practice in detail.

Small group sessions are also used to involve you in typical transactions encountered in practice. You can expect to carry through tasks as if you were in practice, working in teams, using electronic and other information sources.

The Masters element requires completion of an online Advanced Legal Research module followed by self-directed research. The self directed research is supported by face to face meetings with an individually allocated supervisor.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will normally proceed to a training contract to complete their qualification as a solicitor. The vast majority of LPC graduates go on to become qualified solicitors in a range of organisations across many specialist areas. Some overseas professional bodies accept the LPC as satisfying their admission requirements to practise as a lawyer.
