This programme examines key issues from both a business and economic perspective, including how multinational corporations leverage financial markets when seeking to exploit international business opportunities, the management challenges presented, and the relevance of these to financial and capital markets.

Our Independent Prescribing short course will enable healthcare professionals to take on the role of an independent prescriber in their area of practice.

Pharmacists and nurses are taught together to facilitate multidisciplinary learning and working. A large proportion of the learning will be delivered online, providing a flexible approach to learning by allowing students the benefit of studying this in their own time.

This 30-credit course is available for study at level 7 (master's level). The course runs over four months and normally has two intakes each year. The next intake is in 2018.

The course includes eight days of compulsory university-attended sessions (nine for nurses/midwives) and 18 days of self-directed learning, which will be delivered through e-learning and self-directed study.

In addition, you must undertake 12 days of supervised practice with your designated medical practitioner, which amounts to 78 hours for nurses/midwives or 90 hours for pharmacists.

Please note that successful completion of an accredited course is not a guarantee of annotation or of future employment as a pharmacist independent prescriber.

The course aims to use your current experiences of practice and encourage the development and application of new knowledge and skills to practice.

We aim to:

  • enable you to successfully meet the standards set out by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), allowing you to apply for registration to practice as an independent prescriber;
  • produce competent non-medical prescribers who can provide safe, effective and evidence-based prescribing to address the needs of patients in practice;
  • enable pharmacists and nurses to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes required for safe and effective prescribing practice;
  • help you develop a systematic, evidence-based and reflective approach to independent prescribing practice;
  • identify your own learning needs, develop as a critically reflective practitioner and advance your own learning to sustain continuing professional development, and work at the forefront of your profession.

Do I need an NMP lead signature on my application form?

Not if you are self-funding. If you are being financially supported HENW, then yes.

What does a level 7 course mean and are the credits transferable?

Level 7 study is master's level, which means that you must have an undergraduate degree to undertake this course. The course offers 30 credits, which may be transferrable to other courses. We would advise that you check with the other courses in the first instance.

Can I pay the course fees in instalments?

No, due to university regulations, it is not possible to pay fees in instalments for this course. All fees must be paid prior to commencing the course.

Teaching and learning

A range of teaching methods are used to develop the knowledge and understanding, practical skills, intellectual skills and personal qualities required to become a competent prescriber.

Learning is divided into two units, which will be delivered online as weekly content designed to complement the university-based study sessions.

The online material can be studied in your own time, and will involve directed reading, online discussion and learning activities. As such, you need to be self-motivated to learn in your own time. You must also have a fairly good level of IT skills, as the learning requires you to navigate Blackboard and an electronic portfolio.

The eight university-based study days are designed to enhance student learning by providing the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to learning including group activities, teaching OSCEs, and practical skill sessions.

A minimum of 12 days' learning in practice under the supervision of a designated medical practitioner should be carried out during the four-month course. During this time, students are required to complete a reflective practice portfolio to document and reflect on their learning.

Please note that this is an accelerated course that covers a large amount of learning in a very short space of time. You will need to engage fully with the course, as you will need to complete 26 days of learning and 12 days of supervised practice in this timescale.

Only you can decide whether this approach works for you, but you must be prepared to commit fully for the duration of the course.

Coursework and assessment

We use the following assessment methods:

  • two and a quarter-hour multiple choice question (MCQ) and short answer examination;
  • six-station Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE);
  • patient case study (3,000 words);
  • reflective practice portfolio linked to development of competence in practice.

Course unit details

The course will cover:

  • assessment, consultation skills and history taking;
  • legal and professional issues relating to independent prescribing;
  • decision making and evidence based prescribing;
  • psychological and ethical issues applied to prescribing;
  • pharmacology and drug actions;
  • leadership, accountability and clinical governance.

Much of the curriculum has been determined by the NMC and the GPhC.

StreetLaw

Access to legal knowledge does not just mean people obtaining legal representation when they are involved in a dispute or complex legal process. In order for people to understand their rights and responsibilities they must know and understand their legal rights. To address this aspect of pro bono work, Swansea Legal Practice Course (LPC) students have set up a Streetlaw programme.

Under this scheme Legal Practice Course (LPC) students supported by their tutors, work with schools and community groups to identify legal concerns. The students then research the relevant material and ultimately present their findings to the partner groups in a user-friendly form. Through discussion, role-play and other interactive methods, students and the community group members both learn about the law in context.

The Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course, is a full time, campus-based conversion course for those who wish to teach mathematics but have a degree with relatively little mathematics content. The SKE course helps develop a deep understanding of mathematics at A level and beyond and includes some school experience. 

Following successful completion of the SKE course, students are automatically eligible to take up their place on the PostGraduate Diploma Secondary Education (QTS) Mathematics course which currently attracts bursaries of up to £20,000 (depending on qualifications) in line with the government’s priority to attract more well qualified mathematics teachers as well as an additional £10,000 early-career payment once in teaching. Students may also be eligible for a scholarship of £22,000 in lieu of the bursary from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in collaboration with the London Mathematical Society (LMS), the Mathematical Association (MA), Maths in Education and Industry (MEI) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS).

Following satisfactory completion of the PGDipEd course, plus a successful induction year in school, students can return to complete an MA in Teaching Studies (data collection and a 15,000 word dissertation).

The SKE course at Birmingham is a highly rated subject knowledge enhancement course for those who wish to teach mathematics but have a degree with relatively little mathematics content. The course will help you to increase your confidence by developing a deep understanding of mathematics at A level and beyond. The subject enhancement course at Birmingham works on two levels: the development of personal mathematics knowledge, and also thinking about teaching and learning issues whilst being a learner of mathematics. We wish to develop you as a thinking teacher who can be aware of choices in how to teach mathematics and make informed decisions about how you work with students. The SKE course is suitable for career changers as well as those who have recently graduated. Former students include those who have worked in law, banking and marketing as well as those who have worked in schools as teaching assistants.

Following the successful completion of the 24 week full-time SKE course, students are automatically eligible to take up their place on the PGDipEd course.

Learning and teaching

The Subject Knowledge Enhancement course (SKE) consists of taught sessions in algebra and calculus, geometries, statistics, operations and structure, mechanics and decision mathematics. Other taught sessions include mathematics education, topics sessions and an introduction to using selected mathematics software. You will be part of self-learning groups which will be given the task of learning about further mathematics topics and presenting a taught session to your fellow students. You will also be put into a group to design a display to engage people in mathematical activity.

During the course, you will have the opportunity to teach small groups of pupils from a nearby school within the confines of the School of Education and will gain experience of teaching in a mathematics department in one of our partnership schools.

Employability

Many local schools have a very high regard for Birmingham mathematics PGDipEd (QTS) students and particularly value students who have completed the SKE course and have been successful on their PGDipEd (QTS) course. 

We have been running this pre-ITE Mathematics course course for over 20 years and have an excellent record of students securing jobs at the end of the course. Many of our ex-students get quickly promoted to more senior roles such as Head of Department and mentor in a partnership school.

The online diabetes course is designed to be practical and clinically focused. On completion of the online Diploma in Diabetes, students have:

The postgraduate Diabetes Diploma course is based on the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Curriculum for Diabetes health professional education. The online course lasts one calendar year and is a part time distance learning course. It consists of 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks duration.

Assessment

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Facilitates clinical case discussions with the group.

Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.

Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

Teaching Methods

The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

The lectures series give an opportunity to meet face to face with tutors/other students prior to the online course.

Students are not required to attend the lectures, however those who do benefit as they get a "jump start" to the course. Students who are not able to attend, should request a skype/telephone call to orientate them onto the course and are advised to review the lecture slides.

The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). In partnership with Aardman, this intensive 3 month Certificate in Character Animation is aimed primarily at graduates and is taught by industry professionals within Aardman studios here in Bristol.

The course is led by Loyd Price, Head of Animation at Aardman (Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Flushed Away, Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists and Nightmare Before Christmas) and taught by Inez Woldman (Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Morph, Creature Comforts) with the aim of bridging the gap between education and industry and enabling students to develop the core practical skills needed to become competent professional animators and to create believable characters through acting and performance.

The course has an incredibly successful track record with over 80% of graduates now working in the industry at Aardman and at studios such as Animortal, Factory Transmedia, Blue Zoo, Isle of Dogs and Traveller’s Tales. This year we are delighted to announce Factory Transmedia are formally supporting the course.

This year’s 3 month Certificate in Character Animation course will run from 25th September to 15th December and we are now accepting applications.

The course is open to both CG (Maya) and Stop Frame with a maximum of six students in each discipline. Course fees are £4500 which include free lunches and a two week paid internship in Industry after graduation.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course will take place at Aardman’s studio in Bristol and will be taught by practicing Aardman animators who have worked on many productions including Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, Flushed Away, The Pirates! and the Shaun the Sheep Movie. There will also be additional support from other industry professionals from both the stop frame and CG animation disciplines including Factory Transmedia who we are delighted to announce will be formally supporting the course this year.

The course is short but very intensive with the main aim being to produce students with the level of animation skills needed to allow them to get jobs as animators within this competitive industry. While this is no guarantee of future success, to date over 80% of former students have become animators within the industry.

The course is open to a maximum of 6 Stop Frame and 6 CG students, with the students working in either CG (using Maya) or Stop Frame (using Dragon-Frame). Students will be taught in small groups to enable maximum contact time with staff and other visiting tutors. The course will be taught in a series of weekly assignments, each focusing on a key aspect of animation performance. Students will be encouraged to repeat and finesse each assignment during the week. The course will be based on learning technical and practical skills, providing a foundation on which students can become technically proficient animators and thereby enable them to bring their characters to life. The course is structured to build from simpler exercises towards a short sequence demonstrating character-based performance, which will be animated within scheduled production deadlines.

The course runs from 9.30 – 6pm Monday to Friday. The course fee also includes free weekday lunches and a two week paid placement after graduation in a studio in the U.K. Past placements have included Factory Transmedia, Blue Zoo, Animortal, Isle of Dogs – Wes Anderson Feature, Aardman, JellyFish, and Travellers Tales.

On completion of the course students will:
-Have improved technical animation skills
-Be able to deliver convincing character acting and performance
-Produce their work to a deadline
-Understand the role of an animator with a production
-Have benefited from masterclasses with key industry professionals
-Have completed an industry placement

CURRICULUM

This is a 12 week full time intensive and practical course based at the Aardman studio’s in Bristol. The majority of the course is practical with students working on animation exercises to improve their skills, knowledge and experience.

Initially the course will focus on the core animation skills to ensure that students understand the key animation principles such as timing, weight and lines of action. These technical aspects of animation underpin character performance and are essential to enable students to achieve convincing performance.

Further character-based performance exercises increase the understanding of Character Posing, Blocking and Plotting the action within the shot or sequence. Each exercise builds on what has been learned in the previous week and students will have the opportunity to video themselves acting out variations of the exercises to guide and inform their work.

The course culminates in a short character animation sequence - pre-planned and boarded to showcase the skills learnt during the course. This sequence will be created within the parameters of a realistic production schedule and will reflect the pressures of a live production.

To complement the intensive animation training, students will have life drawing sessions, acting workshops as well as industry masterclasses. These give the students invaluable contacts within the industry moving forwards, as well as tips on how to promote yourself and the soft skills needed within a competitive industry. Past speakers have included companies such as Blue Zoo, Lupus, Jellyfish, Passion Pictures, Factory Transmedia, Turner, Richard Williams, Nick Park, MPC, DNeg and Dreamworks.

The course finishes with a graduation screening which is open to industry, giving students the platform to show their work and network with future employers.

Following on from the course we are aiming to secure a small number of paid internships with production companies based here in the UK. On previous courses these internships have taken place at companies such as Factory Transmedia, Blue Zoo as well as at Aardman. In many cases these placements then led to the students being offered jobs as animators.

Teaching and learning

We use various teaching methods across the course to enable you to participate in debate and hone the analytical and reasoning skills vital to legal and business professionals.

Coursework and assessment

Most course units are assessed by standard methods - either one unseen written examination, or one coursework essay, or a combination of these two methods of assessment. The assessment method of each individual course unit is listed in the course unit description.

This LLM has a compulsory research component, in which students have the option of choosing either to submit two research papers of 7,000-8,000 words each (and each of the value of 30 credits) or writing a 14,000 to 15,000 words dissertation (60 credits). If students choose the option of submitting two research papers, the first research paper must be within the area of a semester one course unit that you have chosen, and the second research paper must be within the area of a semester two course unit that you have chosen. The research element of the course is supported by weekly research methodology lectures delivered throughout semesters one and two designed to improve students' legal writing and research skills. For specialised streams, dissertation topic must be within those streams while for general LLM dissertation topics must be within one of the elective units chosen by the student.

Course unit details

You will be doing 180 credits in total, 120 of which will be taught modules and the remainder 60 credits in the form of two research papers (30 credits each) or a dissertation.

The LLM course will typically offer around 30 different course units in any one year, and will always reflect a wide range of subjects across the legal spectrum. There will usually be course units offered on such diverse topics as international trade and corporate law, financial services regulation, European law, international economic law, intellectual property law, human rights law, corporate governance, and law and finance in emerging markets.

Course units are of the value of 15 or 30 credits. You will be required to select course units to a total of 120 credits, and so must choose a minimum of four course units or may be able to choose a maximum of eight course units to make up your course of study. The LLM Intellectual Property Law has three core course units: Trade Mark Law and Policy ; Patent Law and Policy ; and Copyright Law and Policy . These core course units constitute 75 credits of the 120 taught credits required for the course.

The course has a compulsory research component, in which you have the option of choosing either to submit two research papers of 7,000-8,000 words each (and each of the value of 30 credits) or writing a 14,000 to 15,000 words dissertation (60 credits). To meet the requirements of the taught element of the course, all students must take course units totalling 120 credits. This is normally attained with eight 15-credit course units, as listed below, with 60 credits taken each semester. Students take 5 core units. The availability of individual optional course units is subject to change (due, among other factors, to staff availability to deliver the course units in any given year). Information that is sent to students in the month of August preceding registration onto the course will clearly state the course units that are available in the academic year ahead.

In addition, students who pass the taught element of the course and who are permitted to progress to the research element of the course, must also submit a dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words worth 60 credits.

Part-time  students take four out of the five compulsory course units in the first year, and then take the other one in year two. The remaining 60 credits of optional course units are selected and taken accordingly over the two years. 

 Dissertation

  • Supervised summer dissertation of 12-15,000 words. 
  • Part-time master's students undertake a dissertation in the summer months of year two. Please note that the part-time students can extend their registration for extra 3 months to submit their dissertations in December of their second year, instead of September (you will be advised of the exact date on the second year of the course).

Exit awards

Students who fail to fulfil the requirements to pass the 180 credits necessary to attain the final degree of MRes can leave the course with the award of Postgraduate Diploma by passing 120 credits at the pass mark of 40%, or can qualify for the Postgraduate Certificate by passing 60 credits at the pass mark of 40%. Students who do not fulfil the criteria for passing the taught element of the course at the Masters' level of 50% will not be permitted to progress to the dissertation element of the course, and will leave the course with the highest award that the credits that have been passed will allow.

The LLM Common Professional Examination, also known as the Graduate Diploma in Law, is the route for non-law graduates wanting a fast-track pathway to a professional law qualification. For Distance Learning Applicants

The distance learning course begins with an induction programme that includes an introduction to using the on-line learning platform – CANVAS, and to ensure that you are familiar with the University’s systems. The induction programme is designed to introduce you to techniques for the study of law such as using the law library, research methodology, and an introduction to the English Legal System and skills which provides a background on the law-making processes of England and Wales.

The distance learning mode of study provides the opportunity for students around the world to undertake this course. The course will be delivered using e-learning study materials with on-line support from academic staff. In addition, you will be able to access the electronic learning resources provided by the University’s Directorate of Academic Support (DAS). Therefore, it is essential that you have the use of a computer with ‘broadband’ internet access. You will also need to set aside time and arrange quiet study space to undertake your studies on the course.

Exemptions from undertaking the whole course

If you have studied and passed at degree level a few ‘foundation’ modules, you may apply for partial exemption from undertaking the full course programme, see reference to this in the Academic Stage Handbook. However, where exemptions are granted, so that you do not study the full course programme, you will not be eligible for the Master’s award. You will only be eligible for postgraduate credits for the modules you have successful completed.

What happens on the course?

The LLM [CPE] course consists of seven compulsory foundation modules. These are prescribed by the JASB, ensuring that you have the relevant knowledge base in each of the following areas: Constitutional and Administrative Law; Criminal Law; Equity and Trusts; European Union Law; Land Law; Law of Contract and Law of Tort.

The induction which is studied over two weeks provides a background of the English Legal System, including topics on court structure, common law and equity, the anatomy of a statute, the anatomy of a case, and civil and criminal procedure.

The LLM [Common Professional Examination] is a very popular course within the School of Law and is based on the study of the essential modules for entry into one of the legal professions.

In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (“RAE”) the School's average ranking was the joint highest ranking of all new universities within the Region with 65% of law staff ranked at an international level or above.

Mooting and other legal skills competitions provide the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a lawyer. Also, a purpose built courtroom gives you a taste of life in a real court with purpose-built legal equipment and special acoustics.

There are also regular visits to The Inns of Court, Houses of Parliament as well as career talks from local firms, police and other relevant organisations.

This course is designed for anyone who wants to become a solicitor – whatever area of law you are interested in. To apply, you will have already completed a qualifying law degree or a non-law degree, plus a Graduate Diploma in Law.

The course attracts a rich blend of students with a variety of backgrounds and interests – from around the world and from all parts of the UK.

Providing you with a solid academic foundation, this programme is taught at Masters level, and its structure and content fully meet the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) requirements. The Legal Practice Course (LPC) is part of the required training for qualification as a solicitor of England and Wales, and follows completion of the required academic stage of training.

City’s LPC is taught at Masters level. The course offers you two possible routes:

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice ('The LPC'): If you successfully complete the compulsory taught element of the course (150 credits) you will be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma and be certified as having completed Stages 1 and 2 of the Legal Practice Course.  This is the compulsory vocational qualification required to be completed as part of your training to become a solicitor and to be eligible to be admitted to the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales.
  • LLM in Legal Practice ('the LLM'): Alternatively, you may choose to complete both the LPC and an additional 30 credit practice-focussed dissertation to achieve a Master’s Degree.

It is also possible to join the course for Stage 1 of the LPC only, Stage 2 of the LPC only or one or more of the electives.

Accreditation

The course is approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and is a compulsory element of the process of qualifying as a solicitor.

Teaching and learning

One of the strong features of the LPC at City is the level of support students receive. All of the tutors on the course are solicitors, some of whom have worked as partners in their previous firms. They are supported by occasional sessions delivered by practitioners or visiting academics who are experts in their particular fields.

The course is structured in a way that allows you to gain maximum benefit from the experience that tutors have. You will therefore get a high level of face-to-face contact time with tutors.

This is reinforced by the size of the groups. For the workshops, you will normally be in a group of 16 students. This group will then split into two for the skills sessions, which are normally taught in groups of eight students. This allows more time for students to get guidance from tutors.

These smaller sessions are underpinned by the large groups. All students will attend these sessions, which give an overview of the area being studied.

If you choose to take the LLM, the classes that you take on the LPC provide the taught element of the course. To complete your studies and be awarded the LLM in Legal Practice, you will also have to produce a dissertation of between 7,500 and 10,000 words. In order to do this, you will need to work independently, use practitioner sources and apply law at an advanced level to solve problems whilst developing an awareness of current practice issues.

In support of your work on the dissertation, we provide:

  • One-to-one supervision.
  • Web-based guidance on research, planning and writing a dissertation.
  • Access to all City Law School and City, University of London facilities, including library services, IT support and careers guidance.
  • Induction sessions on research and writing skills.

Assessment

The assessment regime for the course has to meet the SRA’s requirements. This means that the Core Practice Areas, Electives and Professional Conduct and Regulation (including Solicitors Accounts) are assessed by means of a written examination.

The Course Skills are assessed in the context of the Core Practice Areas and Wills in a manner that is appropriate to the individual skill. For example, you will have to conduct a filmed interview with an actor as your client, make a filmed court submission, draft a legal document or prepare a letter of advice for a client.

Our assessments are open book and therefore test your application of the law rather than your memory.

Modules

The course begins in September with a two-week Foundation when you will have classes every day. This will introduce you to the Course Skills and the more practical approach that we take to studying the law. The course is then divided into two stages.

In Stage One you will study the core modules. During this stage, you will normally attend four days a week. You will normally have three one-and-half-hour sessions a day amounting to 16 to 18 hours a week. Stage One runs from September to February (including assessments).

In Stage Two, you will study three elective modules. Your timetable will depend on the electives that you choose. You will have around 13.5 to 15 hours of classes a week, timetabled over four days, during this stage. Stage Two runs from March to June (including assessments)

If you choose to complete the LLM, you will be required to write a dissertation between June and September.  In addition to supervision, we will provide you with an induction covering research and writing skills in June. There will be no other timetabled teaching during this period.

Career prospects

This course is designed to prepare you for life as a trainee solicitor.

Many applicants will not have a training contract when they start the course. We offer the bespoke Training Contract Advisory Service (TCAS) which you can access as soon as you have accepted your place. This is run by members of the team who were partners in their firms and have in-depth expertise of what employers are looking for.

More about this course

The course will cover higher level GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics. There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Statistics, Euclidean Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy.

We will use mathematics materials which are commonly used in classrooms to promote interactive engagement in mathematics including group work and extensive use of ICT. The course will include an introduction to relevant themes in teaching and learning which will also develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. There will be a two week school placement where you will have an opportunity to observe and participate in classroom mathematics.

The course will be assessed by a continuous assessment portfolio and a final examination. The portfolio will include mathematical tasks, written assignments, a profile of the school placement and work designed to practice specific areas of the curriculum. The final examination will include a GCSE Higher Mathematics paper (calculator and non-calculator papers) and a paper of relevant questions of A-level standard.

Professional accreditation

The course is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), and London Met is approved to provide SKE with NCTL funding for either maths or French.

Modular structure

The twelve-week course will be based at the University for four days each week Tuesday to Friday, with the exception of a two week placement in schools which will be arranged for you. You will be following a course which focusses on the content of higher GCSE level and early A level Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

There will be mathematical modules on: Algebra of Polynomial Functions and Equations, Trigonometry and Continuous Functions, Calculus, Data Handling and Euclidean Statistics, and Geometry. An introduction to educational issues will include reading, films, and an introduction to current issues in education policy. There will be a 2 week placement in a mathematics department in a secondary school.

You will learn mathematics in a variety of ways including mathematics software, group work and by following targets tailored to your own needs. Learning mathematics in these ways will give you first-hand experience of the pedagogies which you will use in the PGCE course. The school placement will give you the chance to see mathematics teaching in a school and you will, by completing specially designed evaluation tasks, develop reading and writing skills necessary for the PGCE. Throughout the course there will be regular tutorials to monitor your progress and provide help and guidance to make the London Met maths enhancement course a successful first step in your teaching career.

Funding

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses (SKEs) are 12 weeks long. Your fees are paid by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). In addition, you will receive a bursary of £2,400 or £800 per month. More information on Enhancement Courses is available from the DfE.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

The LLM Advanced Legal Practice course will allow you to undertake an in-depth study of a specialised legal topic under the supervision of one of our dedicated teaching team. You will also develop your skills in legal research and the coherent presentation of this research in written format.

Designed for qualified lawyers, solicitors, barristers and those with an equivalent qualification, this course is delivered via distance learning across a one to two year period, allowing you to study at times convenient to you. Applicants must successfully have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC), Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) or equivalent. This course is also open to those who are currently completing their legal qualification at Northumbria University.

Although a majority of this course is delivered online, you will have ongoing access to staff who will support you through every step of your degree.

The initial stage of this course is focused on tutor-directed learning and you will be allocated a personal tutor who will provide guidance and feedback as you begin to work towards producing your dissertation project.

They will work with you throughout all stages of your dissertation, providing feedback on each chapter and advice on the suitability of your chosen topic, research techniques and whether your project is sufficiently analytical.

Teaching And Assessment

This course is primarily delivered online to provide flexibility and the ability for you to study at times convenient to you. Teaching will be delivered via guided reading, self-evaluative tasks and formative writing exercises that will help you to develop your analytic, research and writing skills.

In the early stages of your course you will have the opportunity to participate in a ‘surgery’ session, where you can discuss your expectations and explore issues relating to the mechanics of this course and its delivery.

You will then study a Legal Research and Study Skills Unit, before progressing to your dissertation, which is the sole assessment method for this course.

Your dissertation must concentrate on the law in England and Wales but, providing there is an appropriate tutor available to supervise, its topic can be of your choosing and can include a comparative study of international legal jurisdictions. Since the project requires in-depth research it may be closely related to your intended or current area of practice.

The LLM International Business and Commercial Law offers you the opportunity to develop an advanced understanding of the law governing commerce and finance in today's international market.

Multinational companies must regularly overcome a wide range of legal and governance issues in order to do business worldwide. This course will encourage you to explore the legal challenges faced by international business and analyse the fundamental legal framework for dealing with them, looking at areas such as corporate governance, international trade transactions and competition law.

You will also be given the opportunity to explore topical issues, such as the implications of the global financial crisis, corporate social and environmental responsibility, the role of brands in globalisation, global economic governance, and the legal challenges of business operation and foreign investment in a development country context.

Aims

On completion of this LLM course, you should have gained:

  • A thorough knowledge of the legal fundamentals of international commerce and finance;
  • Deeper insight into specific problems and critical issues faced by international business today and the international legal frameworks in dealing with them;
  • An understanding of the legal framework for business and commerce within regional economic blocs, such as the European Union;
  • Familiarity with the relevant academic debates and new developments in law.

Coursework and assessment

Most course units are assessed by standard methods - either one unseen written examination, or one coursework essay, or a combination of these two methods of assessment. The assessment method of each individual course unit is listed in the course unit description on The School of Law website. 

The course has a compulsory research component, in which students have the option of choosing either to submit two research papers of 7,000-8,000 words each (and each of the value of 30 credits) or writing a 14,000 to 15,000 words dissertation (60 credits). If students choose the option of submitting two research papers, the first research paper must be within the area of a semester one course unit that you have chosen, and the second research paper must be within the area of a semester two course unit that you have chosen. The research element of the course is supported by weekly research methodology lectures delivered throughout semesters one and two designed to improve students' legal writing and research skills. For specialised streams, dissertation topic must be within those streams while for general LLM dissertation topics must be within one of the modules chosen by the student.

Course unit details

You will be doing 180 credits in total, 120 of which will be taught modules and the remainder 60 credits in the form of two research papers (30 credits each) or a dissertation.

The LLM course will typically offer around 30 different course units in any one year, and will always reflect a wide range of subjects across the legal spectrum. There will usually be course units offered on such diverse topics as international trade and corporate law, financial services regulation, European law, international economic law, intellectual property law, human rights law, corporate governance, and law and finance in emerging markets.

Course units are of the value of 15 or 30 credits. You will be required to select course units to a total of 120 credits, and so must choose a minimum of four course units or may be able to choose a maximum of eight course units to make up your course of study.

The course has a compulsory research component, in which you have the option of choosing either to submit two research papers of 7,000-8,000 words each (and each of the value of 30 credits) or writing a 14,000 to 15,000 words dissertation (60 credits). The taught element of the degree programme will total 120 credits and the research element of the degree programme will total 60 credits i.e. you will study 180 credits for a master's programme. Steps to becoming a solicitor or barrister

On successfully completing the CPE you are eligible to enter the Legal Practice Course (for intending solicitors) or the Bar Professional Training Course (for intending barristers), which has some additional entry requirements including an aptitude test and English language proficiency.

Teaching and learning

The primary aims of the course are to ensure that you achieve a sound understanding of English law covered in the seven foundation subjects, which provides a solid grasp of the structure and operation of the English legal system.

Classes consist of a mixture of lectures and smaller group meetings where exam technique and problem solving approaches are practiced. The course is well supported by online materials and search resources, which can be accessed off-campus.

Employability

Solicitor or Barrister:

This course can lead to one of many careers in law from a professional qualification as solicitor or barrister to a wide variety of careers in both public and private sectors.

While our graduates may go on to join professional courses leading to qualification as a solicitor or barrister, the Diploma is also useful for numerous jobs that value skills in analysis, clear communication, efficient organisation and reasoned persuasion.

BSB and SRA:

This course is fully recognised by the Bar Standards Board and Solicitors Regulation Authority and constitutes completion of the Academic Stage of Training for the purposes of further study on either the Legal Practice Course (for intending solicitors) or the Bar Professional Training Course for intending barristers (with additional entry requirements including an aptitude test and English language proficiency).

LLM Progression:

Unlike a Graduate Diploma in Law our PgDip Legal Studies plus CPE is a postgraduate level qualification. After successfully completing the course you'll accumulate sufficient postgraduate credits to be eligible to submit for the further award of LLM by dissertation.

The LLM is an optional qualification additional to your Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies. To obtain the LLM you must successfully complete a supervised 15,000 word dissertation for which preparation has already been undertaken by your successful completion of the project module forming part of the programme leading to the PgDip Legal Studies plus CPE. The Masters dissertation is usually submitted in the semester following completion of the PgDip Legal Studies plus CPE. You'll not be required to attend classes when researching and writing your dissertation and you'll therefore be able to enrol on the Legal Practice Course or Bar Professional Training Course in the September following the successful completion of the PgDip in Legal Studies.
