Student Prizes

Coursework and assessment

Assessment across the course units varies, and includes a combination of examinations, essays, course work, assignment, report and group presentations. A dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words is also undertaken in the final semester over the summer.

Course unit details

During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits and consists of both compulsory and optional taught units which can be viewed in the list below.

The dissertation involves the identification and refinement of an HR problem, undertaking an in-depth literature review, the collection of primary data, and the analysis and evaluation of this data so as to produce a set of implementable and/or secondary recommendations.

Students studying for the MSc HRM and PgDip HRM will be required to complete the 4 core units in your first year. Working closely with the Chartered Institute of Personnel an Development (CIPD), the programme has aligned its module structure to the CIPD’s Advanced Diploma and created flexible study options including distance and blended learning. The course is relevant for Human Resource Management professionals in all types of organisation within the UK and internationally and aimed at experienced middle or senior level managers or HR professionals. Consequently they are likely to have relevant work experience as well as hold appropriate formal educational qualifications suitable for a Masters programme.

The programme makes sure students not only develop the knowledge they need, but also provides them with the know how to apply that knowledge and develop their skills as professional practitioners.

The MA HRM Programme team are all practitioners themselves, who work in the various specialism’s within HRM. Key Course Features

-Course Delivery – There are two modes of delivery, Distance Learning and Blended Learning with the only difference between the two modes being the tutorials. For Distance learning these will be asynchronous online forums, whilst Blended Learning students will attend once a month for face to face contact with the tutor. Narrated lectures, subject guides and supporting material will all be delivered online. Why? Flexibility. Busy working lives, and a turbulent environment mean that professionals don't have time for day release and it is reflective of how people want to learn in the digital age.
-Residential Weekends - Which will take place once a trimester (5 during the programme in total) - these will be a mixture of experiential learning workshops designed to build skills and develop self awareness, visiting speakers sharing experience of HR in practice and application in practice sessions to demonstrate the connection between what the student has learned and what that means for them within their workplace through case studies, discussion and collaborative learning.
-Mentoring programme throughout the Course - Students will be asked to nominate a mentor in their workplace who will become part of their programme of study with the development of learning contracts and scheduled mentoring sessions, the outcomes of which will form of part of the students Continuous Professional Development Record.
-Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to network and attend the CIPD conference, as well as accessdifferent levels of CIPD membership (depending on your progress through the course).

What Will You Study?

The module structure is closely aligned to the CIPD's Advanced Diploma. The advantage of this is that students are now able to take individual modules, to study for Continuous professional Development purposes. If a student took their CIPD qualification some time ago and wants to refresh knowledge and skills in particular subject areas this is now possible.

Or if a student began their studies and haven't finished all the modules in order to finish their studies and need to complete individuals modules to upgrade to Chartered Membership they can. It also means that for those students taking the full programme only two modules will be studied and completed per trimester supporting students in being able to differentiate the subjects and regularly review their progress during the programme. It also means that students can join in January as well as the start of the normal academic year (subject to viability of cohort)

The dissertation which has been the mainstay of the Masters programme is being replaced with a Research for Publication module. Students will be working towards the development of a publishable journal article. Although publication is not guaranteed, the aim is that each year Wrexham Glyndŵr University will see some of the MA HRM Programme students leave, not only with their Master's Qualification but also with a published journal article to add to their CV. Our hope is that our students will not only be learning from contemporary research but contributing to it as well.

Assessment and Teaching

Assessment of modules is predominately a mixture of course work and unseen assessments in relation to the main topic/theme of the modules and is normally based on research within the student’s host organisation.

Online submission of assessments by both Distance Learning and Blended Learning Students will be used to avoid the requirement for students to present their submission in person during school office opening times. Web conferencing platforms are used in some MA HRM Programme modules for live online assessments. Distance Learning Students will be able to perform Oral Assessments, Simulations and Practical assessments using web conferencing platforms where required.

For online assessments to be possible Distance Learning Students must have a webcam, microphone, headset and direct high-speed internet connection. Students are responsible for ensuring that their computer system and internet connection will support the web conferencing platform prior to any assessment. The assessments conducted via Web Conferencing Platforms will be run in ‘real time’ and will be recorded for external moderation purposes.

It is therefore considered advantageous for a student to be in employment throughout their study, although students may apply their learning to an organization with which they are familiar.

A student must also satisfy one, or a combination of, the following criteria:
-An initial degree of Glyndŵr University, or another University approved degree awarding body.
-A non-graduate qualification which the University deemed to be of satisfactory standard for the purpose of postgraduate admission.
-Relevant work experience that is deemed to compensate the lack of formal qualifications and have held a position of management responsibility for a minimum of two years.

A student who has already achieved the current or previous CIPD Advanced Diploma may be given permission to proceed directly onto Year 3. Students with other qualifications may also be considered for full or part exemption from the programme in line with Glyndŵr University’s RPL criteria.

Membership of the CIPD is widely regarded as providing a distinct advantage to those who wish to pursue a career in the fields of HRM and Employment Relations and is increasingly seen as an essential requirement. The CIPD currently has 145,000 members and job advertisements for HRM posts frequently make reference to the need for CIPD membership. CIPD status is nationally recognised in the UK but is increasingly recognised on an international basis.

This pathway meets the CIPD’s Advanced level criteria enabling those that have successfully completed and passed the pathway to apply for Associate and then Chartered level membership depending on their HR role/level and experience. The CIPD charges a student membership fee (currently £132). Associate and Chartered membership levels are granted by the CIPD. The modules included in the pathway are detailed below. There are no electives, as students need to complete and pass each module.

Learning and teaching

Study abroad

Students have an opportunity to broaden their international experience by taking part in study tours embedded alongside our programmes throughout the year. These tours are provided by the Faculty where all expenses are covered. Previous tours have included trips to Bahrain (Ahlia University) and Qatar (Qatar University).

These tours help our students to gain knowledge about international business and entrepreneurship, as well as providing opportunities to practice and develop communication and interpersonal skills. Students are given a hands-on opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained in class, all whilst becoming more aware of diverse cultures and strengthening international relationships.

Students take part in a dynamic mix of both theory and practice-related activities including: interactive problem-solving workshops, company visits, talks by guest speakers (from the public and private sector), cultural visits, and social activities.

Study support

All module leaders have ‘open door’ sessions where they are available to students on a weekly basis. You’ll be allocated a personal tutor throughout your studies, and a supervisor to guide you through your dissertation projects and act as a research mentor.

The Effective Learning Service (ELS) is a dedicated facility within the School of Management, established to support our students to maximise their academic learning (e.g. assignments and examinations) as well as help overseas students adapt quickly to UK academic requirements.

Course content

The aim of this course is to develop you as an HR professional. You will be introduced to specialised knowledge and research evidence giving you an in depth understanding of successful people management in organisations. Perhaps more importantly, you will practice the tools and techniques of strategic and operational HRM giving you practical, insight-driven experience which will help further your career.

The modules on this course are designed to provide you with expert knowledge of distinct HR subject areas together with exposure to contemporary debates, policies and practices, keeping you at the forefront of developments in your field.

You will develop an understanding of HRM within a range of organisational contexts, and you will be equipped with the analytical and diagnostic skills required of HR professionals.

In addition to the modules making up this course you will attend a two day off-site residential at the end of the taught programme focusing specifically on skills development activities. Attendance at the residential is a course requirement and the cost is included in the course fees.

Semester 1

HRM in Context – You will explore HRM in a business context to develop your understanding of the increasingly complex environments HR must work within both inside and external to organisations. This module allows learners to develop analysis skills to facilitate informed choices on which strategies may be most and least appropriate.

Investigating a Business Issue – You will diagnose and investigate a live business issue from a HR perspective, locate the issue within the body of contemporary knowledge, collect and analyse data, derive supportable conclusions and make practical and actionable recommendations for change and enhancement of current practice.

Resourcing and Talent Management – You will evaluate strategies for resourcing and managing talent within the organisation. There is a focus on activities concerned with resourcing the organisation; the practical aspects of recruitment, selection, employee retention and dismissal, and also on the strategic aspects of planning an organisation’s long and short term human resource requirements. This requires analysis of external labour markets and considerations of flexibility, as well as consideration of how internal labour markets may be made more productive and effective.

Performance Management – You will investigate the management of employee performance within the organisation, exploring the evidence that people are a major source of competitive advantage and the challenge of how best to develop and manage people to maximize their performance. You will assess the major systems for enhancing the performance of employees at all levels and advise organisations on the most appropriate methods for managing performance.

Semester 2

Leading Managing and Developing People – You will analyse key factors in leading, managing and developing people for organisational success. Every organisation is made up of individuals whose behaviour, individually or collectively will impact on its ability to succeed. Organisational performance can be enhanced and competitive advantage increased through the strategic management, leadership and development of people. This module enables you to gain an in-depth knowledge of HRM and HRD and to explore major themes from the growing literature and research in this subject area.

Learning and Talent Development – You will develop a critical understanding of the role and influence of a range of contextual factors associated with the design, delivery and evaluation of learning and development in a variety of organisational contexts. You will also explore and evaluate the contribution of learning and talent development strategies and practices in meeting the aspirations, ambitions and objectives of the organization and the individual. This is a seven week module.

Employment Relations – You will develop and reflect upon your knowledge and understanding of Employment Relations from a number of different perspectives. The holistic significance of employment relations within an organisation is emphasised together with the importance of aligning HR policies with business strategy, change processes, employee voice and involvement practices. Good employee relations are important for an organisation’s success in the achievement of its business objectives and for gaining employee commitment to those objectives. Increasing legislation in this area has also brought pressure to develop appropriate managerial strategies to ensure employee commitment to organisational success. This is a seven week module.

Semester 3

Research Methods and Dissertation – In this semester you will work on completing a 16,000 word dissertation. You will undertake this as self-study and you will be allocated a supervisor who will guide and support you through this process. Meetings with your supervisor are not compulsory but are strongly recommended.

At the end of teaching you will undertake a two day residential course that will explore how to put all the skills from the course into developing good HR practices.

Methods of Learning

The learning and teaching style on this course is designed to enable you to take responsibility for your own learning and skills development within a caring environment facilitated by high quality academic support from tutors. You will be introduced to much of the core course content through activities that can be undertaken in your own time, off campus. These will usually be facilitated through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment – a web-based portal where you will be able to participate in learning activities, on-line discussions, reading and reflection. During on-campus sessions, the emphasis will be on participative and interactive activities designed to consolidate and develop your understanding through debate, discussion, role-play and participation in events such as guest speakers and a mock employment tribunal.

The course uses a carefully balanced combination of in-course assignments designed to enrich your learning which include business projects, reflective activities, group work presentation, examinations and a substantial research dissertation

This course usually has a diverse student group and this diversity provides a rich basis for sharing of different experiences and thinking on organisational and people issues. Peer networking and action learning sets will be facilitated and encouraged to maximise the learning to be gained from different student experiences.

Full-time students will take four modules in both Semester 1 and 2, part-time students will take two modules in both Semester 1 and 2.

Each module will require you to attend a three hour workshop per week.

For full-time students, taught sessions will normally be delivered over two days each week. For part-time students, it would normally be one day per week.

To maximise chances of success on this course, we recommend students spend approximately 12 hours a week per module in self-directed study time to prepare for the sessions and complete assignments.

Assessments

Assessment will be undertaken by a range of methods including written assignments, business reports, projects, reflective activities, group work, presentations and examinations.

The 16,000 word Dissertation is a major component of this course and allows students to demonstrate a range of knowledge, skills and insight in their chosen topic area.

The MA HRM reflects and incorporates CIPD knowledge and competence requirements. Completing the MA HRM will provide you with the underpinning knowledge required for Chartered CIPD membership. If you have the relevant experience you can then apply for full membership based on your workplace activities and behaviours through the CIPD.

Teaching and learning

Assessment across the course units varies on the modules chose. It includes a combination of examinations, individual essay, course work, assignment and group project and presentation assessment. A dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words is undertaken during the final semester over the summer.

Course unit details

During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits and consists of both compulsory and optional taught units which can be viewed in the list below.  Please note that certain modules have to be taken to achieve CIPD recognition

Over the summer period, you will carry out your Research Dissertation, worth 60 credits. Examples of recent dissertation project topics include:

At the end of your first year of studies, once teaching is over, there will be a two-day skills development workshop that will explore the skills required to be an effective HR leader. This is a great chance to consolidate your learning from Year 1 in a relaxed and informal setting with your classmates and tutors. The workshop is an essential and required part of the course.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and the MA in Human Resource Management will progress your career and enhance your HR professional practice. You will develop core HR skills and knowledge as well as the ability to understand and evaluate issues of strategic importance to HRM.

These part-time programmes are studied through a combination of on-campus and online learning. You will benefit from the flexibility of our virtual learning environment and also face-to-face interaction with tutors and classmates.*

The programme is fully accredited by the CIPD against the Advanced Knowledge Standards. You will gain Associate membership of the CIPD on successful completion of your course.

In Year 2, you can choose to study for the full MA in HRM or opt for the Postgraduate Diploma in HRM. Both lead to Associate membership of CIPD and there is a full briefing during Year 1 to help you make this choice.

If you already have a Postgraduate Diploma in HRM from any educational provider, you can make use of our Direct Entry MA Human Resource Management Top Up option. This involves one module and a dissertation over one academic year and results in an MA HRM award.

Course structure

The MA HRM and PG Dip HRM are practice-based and academically rigorous, providing you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for the challenging role of a human resource professional. Both programmes are fully accredited by the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) and mapped against the Advanced Diploma in HRM. Both programmes enable you to gain Associate Membership of the CIPD and as these qualifications are at Advanced Standard, this enables higher membership grades of the CIPD to be achieved with experience, rather than further study.

CIPD membership

It is a requirement of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development that all students enrolling on a CIPD HR Programme are student members of the CIPD and pay membership fees to the CIPD. The cost of this is not included in your Oxford Brookes fees. If you are already a student member you are still required to register your continuing professional development with the CIPD, and we ask that you provide us with your CIPD number. You can find details of the CIPD's current student membership fees on their website.

Teaching and learning

On-campus sessions involve tutor input, analysis of case studies, problem-solving activities, virtual business simulations, presentations, analysis of data for decision making, and directed reading and research. Some skills development is best addressed in more intensive workshops and such events will focus principally on:

  • team building and problem solving
  • people management skill sets (eg. interviewing, negotiating, managing disciplinary and grievances)
  • leadership and influencing skills
  • data handling and presentation skills using IT applications

Both on-campus and online learning are fully supported by our library, with almost all resources (journals, reports and many books) now being available electronically 24 hours a day.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually with a range of assessment methods being used. These include individual assignments, group work, presentations, examinations, a portfolio to demonstrate continuing professional development, and individual research reports. Some assessments include an element of peer and/or self-assessment.

Specialist facilities

We have invested over £30m to create modern teaching and learning facilities and created a new home at Headington for the Business School.

Completed in 2017 it contains:

  • 30 teaching rooms and a collaborative lecture theatre.
  • A new Main Hall with soundproof wall, perfect for teaching and events like graduations.
  • Social learning spaces and a cafe.
  • A new gateway into the Headington Campus.

Our library provides specialist business resources (both hard copy and via online access) to UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, a wide range of constantly updated key texts, and postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses.

Field trips

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.

Attendance pattern

The course is mainly delivered through two taught semesters per year running from September to May. Each individual module consists of up to 12 sessions offered through a blend of on-campus and online learning. For each semester the on-campus element will take place through up to five early evening sessions (5-8pm) and three full-day Saturday sessions. In year one the evening sessions are on a Tuesday; in year two evening sessions are on a Wednesday. In addition, there is one full weekend workshop in the first year. Those sessions offered online will on occasion require you to join a virtual classroom at a specific time in the early evening but will mainly be completed in your own time, using online learning materials and taking part in online discussion fora.

If you study the full MA Human Resource Management rather than the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management you also complete your dissertation over a third semester in the summer of the second year. If you’re completing the full MA, you have the option to do your research methods and dissertation modules entirely online. Note: this revised course delivery pattern is subject to CIPD approval.
