The Master of Professional Business Analysis is a conversion programme designed for graduates outside the ICT sector who want to become business analysts.
The Master of Professional Business Analysis (MBusAn) degree has been developed as a component of the Wellington ICT Graduate School created by Victoria University and its partners. The programme is closely linked with industry requirements and courses are offered with industry collaboration.
The Master of Professional Business Analysis (MBusAn) consists of 10 taught courses plus a project taken full-time over 12 months, starting in July (Trimester 2) of each year.
Courses in the first part of the programme are organised around seminars where students learn about the latest theoretical advances, and apply these to a case which mirrors the challenges and complexities of a real-world business.
In the second part of the programme, courses are organised as clinics and students work directly with industry partners in a workshop setting, examining real business problems, and the final project requires significant time working with an industry partner, under the supervision of an academic.
The Master of Professional Business Analysis is a 180-point degree consisting of ten 15-point courses and a 30-point project, as follows:
Part 1 Core business analysis courses (total 90 points)
Part 2 Business environment (total 45 points)
Part 3 Project and consulting skills (total 45 points)
Courses will be centred on practical problem-solving tasks, and typically will start with a problem described in a case or directly by an industry partner. The courses will enable students to apply the various concepts seen in the classroom to the industry problem during the trimester.
In addition, it is expected that the 30-point project, MBUA 532, will be used to build on the knowledge covered in the courses. Projects are seen as an "industry intensive period", enabling students to reflect on how the academic content can be applied to a complex situation.
The MBusAn programme seeks to provide capabilities to students to meet the shortage of skills observed in the ICT sector.

This course provides students with the theoretical foundations of marketing along with an added appreciation of the skills required in solving analytical and practical marketing problems.
Students will consider the use and application of management science techniques in a variety of marketing and business contexts through participation in courses in marketing management, marketing decision analysis, business statistics and forecasting, marketing research methods, and more advanced applications in credit risk management, problem solving and spreadsheet modelling skills and data mining.
This practical application of quantitative marketing, taught alongside the theoretical underpinnings of marketing aptly prepares students for careers as market analysts, business consultants, database managers and marketing researchers.
Learning will primarily be through lectures, set reading, class discussions, exercises, group-work assignments, problem solving in tutorials and case studies. Assessment methods include examinations, assignments, presentations or continuous assessment.
On graduating from your MSc in Marketing and Business Analysis, you will be able to:

The Business Analysis and Service Design pathway will give you the capability to use information and information management to design agile and innovative business services.
Our students learn to apply their knowledge and skills to design technology-based solutions to application domains in business and management. They also gain a thorough understanding of management and leadership issues to enable them to work effectively within a variety of organisations.

Graduates will be equipped for a variety of roles in the digital economy including business analysis, digital marketing, service development, strategic data analysis and consulting roles.

How you will learn

Our postgraduate masters programmes feature a mix of core and optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your individual personal development needs and career ambitions. You will complete up to 10 taught modules during your programme, totalling 180 credits. One module usually equates to 20 credits or 10 hours of work per week. Your week will include lectures, tutorials, workshops and personal study, with each accounting for 25% of your time on average. This stimulating mix of lectures and interactive tutorials provides you with the opportunity to discuss and explore the subject material in depth with your lecturers and fellow students. You will be introduced to the latest thinking and research findings and be able to challenge some of those that have created it. You will also explore real-world issues and tackle current business challenges, and interact with guest lectures and speakers from industry, giving you the opportunity to test, extend and refine your knowledge and skills.
How we assess you
You will learn and be assessed through a wide variety of teaching methods which vary depending on your chosen Masters programme. These include online materials and multimedia content, guest lectures, individual and group assignments, case studies, field visits, dealing room simulations, presentations, applied projects, consultancy work and examinations.
On average examinations form around 70% of the assessed work with the remaining 30% coming from coursework, including a written dissertation or project depending on your chosen programme. The exam period falls between April and June in the summer term, with students taking an average of 5 or 6 exams. Graduation normally takes place in December.
While postgraduate students are self-motivated and determined individuals, study at this level can present additional pressures which we take seriously. Lecturers are available to discuss the content of each module and your personal tutor can meet with you regularly to discuss any additional issues. Each pathway of our MSc Information Management is designed to give a rigorous academic understanding of real-life and current business issues. Graduates of the Systems Analysis and Design pathway will be equipped to manage and utilize information resources in various business fields including business & management, construction management and healthcare through a thorough understanding of systems analysis and design methodology.

Students who pass the module – Business Domain and Requirements Analysis with a mark of 60 or above will be eligible for the British Computer Society Professional Certificate in Business Analysis Practice.
The International Pre-Masters Certificate in Business and English is designed to prepare non-native English speaking students for postgraduate study in business related disciplines.
The aims of the course are to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to confidently achieve at postgraduate level in a business discipline.
The course aims to develop your understanding of key business vocabulary, theories and concepts integral to postgraduate business courses, and your linguistic competence in specific Business English to enable successful study at postgraduate level. It also aims to develop your academic, cognitive, meta-cognitive and professional skills required for successful study at postgraduate level in a business-related area, and to provide you with the necessary personal, professional, interpersonal and key skills to enable development as independent, autonomous learners in preparation for postgraduate study.

Principles of Business
The Principles of Business module provides you with fundamentals of Business Strategy, Global Business and Finance. The module is designed to give students an understanding and appreciation of the contemporary issues faced by businesses, both within national and international markets.
It will interlink three broad subject areas: Strategic Management, Business Practice and Financial Management and will introduce students to the fundamental features and concepts of business management. For those students who do possess some business experience the module will provide academic underpinning to their business practise.
By engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to appreciate and appraise different theories and frameworks in the context of Business and Management, evaluate real life company situations by applying conceptual knowledge and understanding of business practice, and apply theories, concepts and frameworks to analyse and evaluate practical management solutions and formulate operational strategies.
This is a pre-masters course which allows you to progress to a postgraduate course leading to many careers in all business-related areas.

The course is designed in such a way that it contributes towards Sheffield Hallam University Postgraduate attributes. High level transferable skills, such as knowledge application, creative and critical thinking, research and enquiry are integral to the course. You will be encouraged to develop skills that will underpin your future academic and professional development. For example, during the assessed debate students propose a new sales strategy for a UK company, and present and defend their idea to their peers who take on the role of directors of different departments of the company, understanding the different drivers from each area of the company in the decision-making process.
The modules include case studies, team working and industry examples. Module content and related assessment will focus on past and present business scenarios and will form a vital chain in connecting theory with practice. These situations and practice led examples will enhance the student experience and will count towards greater student employability.
A major enhancement to the course will be the opportunity for you to carry out an assessed project based on real-world business problems faced by local organisations, which will be supported by the Venture Matrix team and by module tutors. The project aims to enhance your business awareness and take an enquiry-based approach to learning. The opportunity to visit and communicate regularly with a company will be particularly beneficial to you as an international student from the point of view of business engagement and real-life practical experience. You will be supported through this experience by the module teaching team to propose research-led solutions to a real business issue for a real company.
Examples of previous projects have included market research for a luxury snack company, researching new markets for a local engineering manufacturer, investigating the potential for a sportswear start-up and a competitor analysis for an online service provider.
