The MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a 16 week work placement component at a company or a consultancy. This unique feature of the work placement distinguishes our programme from other similar Masters in the country.

The Applied Corporate Brand Management programme covers issues of branding in blue chip companies, the service industry, banks, petroleum companies, lifestyle organisations, corporate brand heritage, nation and place branding.

You will examine the core contents of branding at the corporate level rather than at the product level. In other words, teaching on the programme focuses on branding of the corporation rather than branding the product.

The focus on corporate branding considers the following components:
Corporate identity
Corporate image and reputation
Corporate design
Corporate culture
Corporate behaviour
Corporate brand structure and brand strategy

You will undertake a project in collaboration with branding firms as part of your consultancy-based dissertation option. Examples include projects that are concerned with measuring the corporate image and ascertaining brand success of a chosen corporation.

Teaching

A particular feature of our Applied Corporate Brand Management course is the use of case studies to contextualise contemporary theory and practice and the importance attached to class presentations to demonstrate the ability to apply theory in practice.
This interactive course, and the Strategic Corporate Brand Management and Consulting and Applied Corporate Branding modules in particular, allow you to engage with current industry experts who provide extra support and guidance in your coursework, classwork and presentations.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable emphasis on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Individual and/or group presentations using laptops, PCs and digital projectors.

Modes of study

1-year, full-time starting in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes seven modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

Placements take place over four months, from 1 September to 31 January the following year and previous placements involved roles such as project manager, marketing executive, brand researcher, internal communication officer and marketing officer amongst others.

On completion of the placement, students proceed to find full-time employment in branding and advertising roles in the UK or abroad.

The purpose of the placement is to provide you with hands-on experience working with a brand consultant or a brand-related department of an organisation in the UK. It is an integral part of the course and you will receive support from the academic staff and the Professional Development Centre while on placement.

Our Luxury brand Management course covers a wide range of modules clustered into five main module groupings:

Marketing and Management:

This grouping encompasses a series of modules that will be sequentially planned based on the structure of a marketing plan. The overall body of knowledge acquired by the students will prepare them to:

analyse complex marketing challenges based on practical case studies
allocate resources strategically to achieve pre-determined objectives
craft brand DNAs allowing for the achievement of a sustainable competitive advantage

Business Issues:

The capacity to listen and interpret markets’ signals is a key component of today’s managers. It needs to be continuously cultivated. Within this module grouping students will discover the idiosyncrasies of the luxury industry from an economic and financial view point.

Luxury Environment:

The concept of rarity has traditionally been associated to the idea of luxury. However, while rarity is still an important factor in determining the value of a luxury brand, terms such as “exclusivity” or “space” are now strongly resounding within customers’ minds as alternative descriptors. In this module grouping students will study the historical evolution of the luxury industry and will explore macro trends that are structuring the different international markets.

Luxury Lifestyle:

The series of seminars comprised within the “Luxury Lifestyle” module grouping will allow our students to experience diverse industries and give them more specific insights on each of them. - Academic and Professional Practice for Fashion
This module is design to cater to students individual learning needs, whether that be focused on research into the fashion industry or towards research and academic skills required for Masters level study. Students will consider their own personal experience and future career aspirations along with a focus on creative digital visualisation skills and industry standard software.

- Fashion Retail Interactions
This module will explore the landscape of fashion retail to encourage students to engage with contextual understanding, looking into areas such as consumer behaviour, sales management, visual merchandising, buying, multi-channel retailing and marketing communication. Students can choose an area of specialism to produce a visual research book, demonstrating their skills in research and analysis.

- Fashion Retail Space and Place
This module will encourage innovative thinking as students question what retail is and what it could be in the future. Students will use industry standard 3D visualisation software to design their own retail space that will be focused on a specific market and consumer base, considering the store environment, use of multi-platform integration across all levels of fashion retail.

- Fashion Brand Design and Communication
This module will critically explore the nature of branding, with both theoretical understanding and creative and practical application. Students will be encouraged to select an existing fashion brand or retailer, researching fully utilising both primary and secondary research methods, before proposing an opportunity for re-branding or re-positioning of the brand. Students will utilise create software to produce promotional materials relating to their ‘new’ brand concept. This module is designed to run as a live brief with a brand.

- Strategic Fashion Retail Innovation
Students will be asked to think globally, exploring the impact of wider factors on the design of fashion retail strategies for innovation. Students will consider a consumer group in a specific marketplace and produce a strategy for international expansion. This strategy will be accompanied by creative promotional material to enhance students research and analytical skills, as well as their visual communication.

The final semester of the degree will include a 60-credit project, which will develop through one of the above modules. The final major project enables students to focus on their area of expertise, designing their own major project brief (with help from lecturers) that will showcase their advance fashion retail knowledge and design skills. Students will be guided on an appropriate project, before working with tutors to create an outcome that can be used as a discussion point in future interviews or exhibitions. Alternatively, students can choose an extended work placement, or reflection on their own work practice, to utilise work placed learning into their MA Fashion Retail.

MSc Marketing with Brand Management

The MSc Marketing with Brand Management is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. This course provides a stronger focus on the specifics of developing and using brands and branding in the marketing context. All students will register for the MSc Course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.
The course is modular, so the credits awarded at the end of each assessed module can be accumulated towards a postgraduate qualification. Students of Marketing with Brand Management study three core topics in the Autumn Semester before deciding on their final course of study. In the Spring Semester MSc Marketing with Brand Management students have to apply this knowledge through a project undertaken for an external company and through an appreciation of Contemporary Issues in Marketing. Programme Description

The MBA Luxury Brand Management programme is designed to equip candidates who have the relevant managerial experience with specialist advanced knowledge and skills to move on to the next level of their career.

The design of the programme will help students gain a deep understanding of the complexities of management within the context of luxury organisations, particularly as luxury markets continue to become more competitive and multi-dimensional, and luxury consumers become more polarised.

There is a strong emphasis throughout the programme on the collection and analysis of data to support complex decision-making. Students will develop the analytical skills necessary to examine a wide range of issues affecting the luxury sector and the ability to construct creative solutions. Active experiential learning will enable students to develop strategic thinking, leadership, interpersonal and group skills and a deeper entrepreneurial outlook. Problem-solving capabilities will also be cultivated through case studies, business games and a live briefs project, created in partnership with leading luxury organisations.

Luxury brands will continue to succeed through the key elements of authenticity, exclusivity and craftsmanship, but today these need to be balanced with 24/7 access and immediacy, and reflect advancements in digital technologies and the increasing power of the consumer. The MBA Luxury Brand Management examines how luxury brands need to find innovative ways to address the classic trade-off between rarity and global expansion.
