You will be required to complete a six-month research project based on your individual research and development in a selected field of modern science. You carry out your research in UCC’s laboratories or at an approved academic or industrial partner.

When you complete your research dissertation in an industrial setting, it provides the company with an opportunity to assess your skills and abilities and to screen potential future full-time employees. Students also have the opportunity to travel aboard to do their research project. This 12-month course is ideal if you want to develop skills in a range of areas. It includes project work and an introduction to research-level theory. You’ll take taught classes for the first two semesters. In the third semester, you’ll work on an extended research project of your own.

Labs, equipment and training

We’ll train you to use our modern analytical instrumentation. We have NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, x-ray crystallography, polymer characterisation methods and advanced microscopy. We also have a team of technicians to assist with spectroscopic services. There are labs for molecular biology, protein chemistry, polymer/colloid synthesis and materials characterisation.

Core modules

You’ll carry out two smaller laboratory projects prior to starting your main research project, to develop practical and scientific communication skill. You also undertake a Research and Presentation Skills module to further develop the higher level skills needed for research.

Examples of optional modules

Lectured modules consist of a wide range of segments, spanning the breadth of chemistry, from which you can choose, to tailor your MSc to your strengths and interests.

Teaching and assessment

We use a mixture of lectures, laboratory practicals, workshops and individual research projects. You may tailor the area of your research project to your particular interests. Assessment of taught modules is through examination, laboratory reports and coursework. Assessment of the project is through a 15,000-word dissertation, oral presentation and viva, as well as assessed performance during the project.

Our MSc Environmental Health two year’s master’s course explores how the environment around us impacts our daily lives and our health through analysing how stressors can affect how our bodies function. We deliver the curriculum of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (a world recognised professional body) teaching about hazard and risk in the topics of: housing and health, environmental protection and health, occupational health and safety, food safety and public health. On completing this course you will have a detailed understanding of risks and how to mitigate impacts using technical, scientific or legal interventions to create a safer and healthier environment.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Geography and Environmental Studies Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) the first 180 credits of this course course fulfils the academic requirement to gain recognition as an Environmental Health Practitioner. Full professional accreditation, opens up a broad range of career prospects in the public, private and voluntary sectors in the UK and abroad.

Members of the core teaching team sit on CIEH committees at both local and national level and in their accreditation visit, the CIEH commended ‘the excellent channels of communication established between Northumbria University and the CIEH’.

This course is delivered by our highly experienced teaching team. Three of the core four teaching staff are Environmental Health Practitioners who bring many combined years of experience gained working across local government, public health, health promotion, private consultancy, advocacy and specialist divisions of the Health Protection Agency (chemical hazard management and health emergency planning) to equip you with specialist knowledge and skills that are at the forefront of the subject.

Our staff are research-active and hold advanced degrees in complimentary subjects (e.g. environmental engineering and sustainable development and public health) and memberships to professional organisations (including the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, Emergency Planning Society, etc.) to ensure they are aware of the latest trends, research and developments within this field.

Throughout the duration of your course you will benefit from site visits, presentations from guest lecturers and practical tasks to support you in transferring the theory you have learned into practise.

Teaching And Assessment

This course is focused upon the five core CIEH subject areas: food safety, housing, health and safety, environmental protection and public health.

Delivering an excellent postgraduate experience you will be offered the opportunity to question and reflect on how the world around us can impact on public health, whilst developing the skills and knowledge necessary to understand these risks and how to intervene and manage them effectively.

Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops. You will also participate in debates, discussion and critiques of academic papers, field trips, case study scenarios and general discussions of academic and ethical issues.

Assessments for this course are undertaken in the form of essays, reports, audits, presentations and assessed discussions completed as an individual and part of a group.

The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

At the end of the course you will have also had the chance to complete professional exams in practical food and the integrated professional assessment. In addition, many of our assessments have been devised to be used as a potential basis to complete parts of your Portfolio of Professional Practice submission to the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). It gives you the practical skills and knowledge to design and synthesise molecules that have therapeutic actions within the body.

The ultimate aim is to invent more selective and safer drugs to fight and cure disease. We also want to fully exploit the opportunities from identification of genes associated with a range of cancers, inherited disorders and agents of disease.

Specialist classes focus on:

You’ll study

The course consists of three theory and three practical modules running between October and April. These are followed by exams. If you pass all exams and want to proceed to MSc you’ll undertake a 10-week research project and submit a thesis at the end of August.

There is a six-week preliminary conversion course starting 1 August that covers basic and underpinning organic chemistry and organic spectroscopy. Successful completion and examination results in the conversion course will allow you to transfer to the MSc in Medicinal Chemistry.

In collaboration with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service all students are tested in a simulated command environment.

Assessment is by examinations, practicals and coursework. Practical assessment involves command simulations.

The course focuses on managerial decision making within the fire and rescue service, in both an operational and non-operational context. It includes environmental scanning (both external and internal), strategy formulation (strategic or long range planning), strategy implementation, and evaluation and control. Situational awareness and risk decision making in time pressured and high risk situations. Students will be tested in command simulations representative of those applicable to the emergency incident domain. The theory and practical sessions will build confidence through the development of practical expertise and specialist knowledge in the field of strategic management.

This course is designed for those who are employed, or who wish to pursue a career, in the area of fire investigation as a fire officer, crime scene investigator, forensic scientist or insurance investigator.

Fire Investigation is the analysis of fire-related incidents and is a highly multi-disciplinary area. Fire investigators need knowledge of fire behaviour, scene management, analytical chemistry and investigative skills. This course covers fire science and fire behaviour, fire investigation, analytical science, and provides students with research skills and knowledge of being an expert witness in the English legal system.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The Fire Laboratory houses a full suite of fire test equipment where the flammability and fire toxicity of various materials can be investigated. MSc students take practical classes, carry out simulated casework and conduct lab-based dissertation research projects. Students also have access to a wide range of analytical instrumentation in the Faculty of Science and Technology’s Analytical Unit. The Unit has gas chromatographs with pyrolysis injection capability and FID, MS and EC detectors, ion chromatographs and high performance liquid chromatographs with diode array, fluorescence and MS and Differential refractometer detectors. The Unit also has facilities for atomic absorption, UV-visible and infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectrometry, inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy With Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDAX).

The course will be delivered through lectures, tutorials and practical exercises. Guided teaching and formal assessments will enhance the development of transferable skills such as report-writing, maintenance of case notes, formal presentations, participation in discussions, ability to work to deadlines, computing skills, public speaking, scientific analysis, adherence and development of laboratory protocols and research methods.

Assessment is by exam, practicals and coursework. Assessments include the examination of fire scenes from real fires and producing case notes and reports, essays, moot courts, presentations and a dissertation.

OPPORTUNITIES

Students graduating from this course will be well placed to gain employment in fire investigation teams, forensic science laboratories, and fraud departments in major government or private organisations, or to go on to further research in academia.
