Austria has gained a global reputation for its strong economy and high standard of living. In line with this, Austria is also home to several distinguished universities.
Although most degree programmes in Austrian universities are taught in German, many institutions are now introducing English or English- and German-taught courses to appeal to international students.
What’s more, tuition at Austrian universities is cheap or completely free for EU nationals, and there are a range of generous funding options available to international students to help cover the cost of living.
This page summarises the performance of Austrian universities in different global rankings.
The following table gives the 10 best universities in Austria in 2024, according to global rankings.
This information is based on the latest rankings tables, researched and published by Times Higher Education, QS and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
Each ranking system uses its own methodology, with different factors having more or less influence on a university's result.

International rankings use all sorts of metrics to assess universities and they aren't all equally relevant to postgraduate study. That's why we've put together a guide to university rankings for Masters students.
As one of Europe’s oldest and largest universities (dating from 1365), the University of Vienna is Austria’s most renowned institution and ranks within the top 200 of all three league tables.
Some of Austria’s other most prominent universities are more specialised, focussing in subjects such as Medicine and Technology. This can limit their visibility in overall rankings, but that shouldn’t put you off exploring what they have to offer at postgraduate level.
