New AI Funding in the UK: What’s on Offer for Postgraduate Students

Good news for postgraduate students wishing to study AI in the UK – the government has announced a £118 million boost in funding for AI-based postgraduate courses and research.

Students will be able to access this funding through new studentships, scholarships and grants as early as 2024.

We’ve taken a look at what this announcement means if you’re thinking of studying an AI course or research programme, and what new funding you can access. The government has also announced wider initiatives that ensure industry participation (which you can also benefit from once you graduate).

New GREAT Scholarships

There will be 15 new government-funded GREAT scholarships available for international students interested in studying Science and Technology courses. The scholarships will also be available for AI and life sciences courses at participating UK universities.

The GREAT scholarships, worth £10,000, are offered by the British Council to international students from 14 countries to study at UK universities. The scholarships are available for one-year taught postgraduate courses.

New AI postgraduate conversion courses scholarships

The Office for Students has announced funding worth £8.1 million which will go towards 818 new scholarships for students from disadvantaged groups on an AI or data science conversion course. This is in addition to the £18.1 million funding made available in 2020 bringing the total for these scholarships to £26 million. There are now more than 2,600 scholarships available across 31 UK universities

A new £1 million grants scheme has also been announced for international AI researchers and engineers to help them relocate and work at UK universities, research institutes and businesses. This sits alongside a new dedicated visa scheme for researchers from across the world to be able to come to the UK early in their careers for internships or placements.
