Scholarship details
If you identify as being from a Black background, you could be eligible to study our MA in Creative Writing for free. The Open University is committed to driving change and ensuring that academic institutions remain inclusive and accessible for all members of society.
1. Be ordinarily resident in the UK and eligible to pay a UK fee.
2. Identify as being from a Black background; applicants must have one of the following ethnicities:
• Black African
• Black Caribbean
• Black Other
• Mixed – White and Black Caribbean
• Mixed – White and Black African
• Other mixed background (to include Black African, Black Caribbean or Black Other)
3. Be intending to study the MA in Creative Writing starting in the 2026/27 academic year.
4. Have a personal annual income of not more than £25,000 per year or receive a UK qualifying benefit.
5. Fulfil the entry requirements for the MA in Creative Writing.
6. Be able to demonstrate your experience of, and a passion for, creative writing.

Once completed, email your application and supporting evidence to our Student Fees team. You’ll find their contact details on the first page of the application form.
Applications close at midday on 29 July 2026. We’ll email you by 14 August 2026 to confirm if you’re successful.
