What’s it like to study a Masters in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is most famous today for its association with the American Hollywood film industry, which has been established in the city since the early decades of the 20th century.

Whilst studying a Masters in Los Angeles you’ll have the enviable experience of living in one of the world’s most famous cities (alongside some rather well-known neighbours).

The city’s famous sites and attractions include Hollywood itself as well as the many theatres, cinema houses and museums that have developed through Los Angeles’s role at the heart of the American creative arts. The Getty Center is a cultural highlight, boasting an outstanding art collection that spans Ancient Greece through to cutting-edge contemporary works.

Away from film, media and celebrity, LA also benefits from an extremely amenable climate and is home to some of Southern California’s best beaches.

Universities in Los Angeles

The oldest public university in Los Angeles is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), founded in 1882. It is part of the wider University of California system, which also includes prestigious institutions elsewhere in the state such as the University of California, Berkeley. UCLA itself has been ranked in the top 50 universities worldwide.

As well as UCLA, Los Angeles is home to two other large public universities: California State University, Northridge and California State University, Los Angeles.

Some of the city’s many private universities and colleges draw upon its unparalleled heritage in film-making and other creative arts. These include the American Film Institute Conservatory, which offers well regarded Master of Fine Arts programmes to a select number of students.

Careers in Los Angeles

As the second largest city in the United States, Los Angeles is a major economic centre that offers excellent career opportunities for talented postgraduates. LA is perhaps most famous as a global entertainment hub – as well as Hollywood, Los Angeles is home to many video game studios and digital media companies. The aerospace and defence industries also have a significant presence in the city region, along with bioscience, logistics and information technology.
