The Faculty is made up of a diverse yet closely related set of subject areas in which staff work together to deliver a high-quality interdisciplinary curriculum

Whilst each of these subject areas is distinctive in character, together they form a complementary and increasingly interdigitating group, focussing on the study of historical, cultural, social and personal aspects of our human world.
Our programmes
We are proud of the range and quality of our programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level across the Faculty. These programmes are widely recognised as providing students with high-quality learning opportunities, and are consistently rated highly in internal and national surveys of student satisfaction. Our innovative programmes enable students to develop subject expertise and highly relevant skills for the future.
An award-winning faculty
At the 2014 Student-Led Teaching Awards, Humanities and Social Sciences won the Faculty of the Year award for the quality of the student experience. Dr Elena Woodacre, Lecturer in Early Modern European History, won Best Lecturer for Constructive and Efficient Feedback and Julie Doyle, Senior Administrator for Applied Social Studies/Sociology Administrator, won Course Administrator of the Year. At the 2015 awards ceremony, the Faculty was very well represented with by far the most shortlisted nominees of all the four faculties. Prizes went to Dr Alan Grattan (Enrichment Activity of the Year, for the Innocence Project), Anna Davenport (Most Innovative Lecturer), and to Politics & Global Studies (Programme of the Year), while numerous Faculty staff were runners-up.
Our research
In addition to being dedicated lecturers, our academic staff are active researchers who contribute to a lively, varied and high-quality research environment. We achieved strong results in the most recent Research Excellent Framework (REF2014), and attract many postgraduate students. We are actively engaged in research and knowledge exchange through our research centres and consultancies, and the many projects carried out in the Departments.
