The School of Education is one of the largest departments of education in the UK. It has a well-established reputation for the quality of its research and teaching which focus on issues relevant to teacher training and the improvement of education nationally and internationally. The School maintains and develops partnerships with schools and other educational agencies in order to inform and influence policy and practice, such as the prestigious National College for School Leadership. The School of Education is a major provider and facilitator of in-service and pre-service education and training for teachers and other educators. It is an internationally recognised centre for research, curriculum and professional development and training.

Students who meet the general entry requirements for the Masters courses can now choose to register for a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Masters level qualification. Students can progress from a Certificate to a Diploma without the award of a Certificate, or from the Diploma to an MA without the award of the Diploma. Please note that official approval is required for the transfer from the Diploma to the MA.

The School of Education Summer School provides an opportunity for students to study for a higher degree in Education during the summer vacation. Attracting participants from the UK and around the world, this is a vibrant learning community working with leading figures in the field of Education. Contact with tutors is maintained through email, telephone and mail, and students can access the electronic facilities of the library at any time and from any part of the world.
