Lincoln is a small city in the East Midlands of England, about 120 miles north of London. As well as a wide range of important heritage sites, Lincoln is also home to two universities and around 16,000 students.
First established in the Roman era, Lincoln is a historic city with a rich tradition spanning many centuries. This is reflected in the city’s many landmarks, including its famous 12th-century cathedral (once the tallest building in the world) and the remains of Roman and medieval architecture that stand alongside more modern buildings.
The city’s economy developed substantially during the Industrial Revolution, as it became an important centre for heavy engineering and railway manufacture. In recent decades commercial and business innovation has been enhanced by Lincoln’s universities and the growing knowledge economy they have generated.
With its rich history and close proximity to other famous English cities, Lincoln has much to offer postgraduate students. The city is home to numerous museums and other heritage sites, but also offers modern shopping and entertainment facilities. A particular highlight is the traditional Christmas market, a German-style event that takes place every year and attracts around 250,000 to Lincoln’s cobbled streets.
Road and rail links make it easy to travel to other nearby university cities such as Nottingham and Sheffield or to visit natural attractions such as the Lincolnshire Wolds (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
The oldest university in Lincoln is the University of Lincoln itself; though its origins stem from the mid-19th century, Lincoln became a university in 1992 and a fully independent local institution in 2001. It is usually ranked in or around the UK top 50.
Lincoln’s other local university is Bishop Grosseteste University, which became a full university in 2012, but traces its roots to a teacher training college established in 1862. Bishop Grosseteste continues to specialise in professional and vocational subject areas.
Key industrial sectors in Lincoln include manufacturing, tourism, healthcare and logistics. Video game developer Rockstar Games has a studio in Lincoln, while Siemens maintains a gas turbine business in the city.
