Lancaster is a town in Lancashire, situated around 50 miles north of Manchester. There are two universities and around 20,000 resident students in the Lancaster region: Lancaster University is situated in Bailrigg, two miles to the south of Lancaster, and a campus of the University of Cumbria operates within the town itself.
Despite its relatively small size, Lancaster has an important place in the history of England. The city was the seat of one of the two competing houses of Lancaster and York seeking the royal throne during the 15th-century Wars of the Roses.
It retains many features of its medieval prominence (including the famous 11th-century castle overlooking the modern town) but also features various attractive examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, stemming from its later development as an agricultural and manufacturing hub.
Postgraduate students in Lancaster have access to some of the UK’s best university facilities whilst living in a scenic part of northern England. As well as its own shopping, entertainment and heritage attractions, Lancaster is near to renowned natural features such as Morecambe bay and the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; it is also a relatively short distance from the famous landscapes and scenery of the Lake District, in nearby Cumbria).
A variety of on- and off-campus accommodation is available for Masters students in Lancaster, ranging from shared housing to private apartments.
Lancaster’s local university, Lancaster University, was founded in 1964. It was soon relocated to a purpose-built campus in nearby Bailrigg, connected to the town by regular public transport services. Lancaster is usually ranked amongst the best British universities and the top 150 worldwide.
As well as Lancaster University itself, Lancaster is home to a campus of the University of Cumbria, housed in a former barracks within the town.
Local government and healthcare are major public sector employers in Lancaster, while BAE Military Solutions has a big presence in the county of Lancashire.
