Bangor is a small city in North West Wales, situated near to the northern border of the Snowdonia National Park. One of the oldest cities in Wales, Bangor is a lively university town where students make up more than half of the local population. Bangor University, founded in 1884, is home to over 11,000 students.
Bangor is a historic place that can trace its roots back to the 6th century, when a monastery was built on the site of what is now Bangor Cathedral.
Bangor makes for a perfect base from which to explore the stunning North Wales countryside: the rugged mountains, beaches and lakes of Snowdonia National Park are close by, while the imposing Mount Snowdon can be reached by adventurous postgraduates in less than hour by car. The town of Caernarfon is just down the coast from Bangor, with its UNESCO-listed medieval castle well worth a visit.

Bangor University was originally established in 1884 as the University College of North Wales, eventually becoming a constituent college of the federal University of Wales at the end of the 19th century. Fast forward to 2007, and the newly-named Bangor University was given degree-granting powers of its own.
Bangor has a small but vibrant economy. The town is famous for having the longest high street in Wales, along which you can find plenty of independent shops and national chains. The BBC also has a presence in Bangor, with TV and radio studios based there.
