Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city and is the capital of the northern Swiss canton of the same name. The city is an important European higher education hub, with three state universities, various specialised higher education providers and around 70,000 students.
What’s it like to study a Masters in Zurich?
Originally the centre of an independent state (prior to the formation of the Swiss confederation) Zurich has always been an important regional city. Across its history it has played a role in the religious Reformation in Europe as well as establishing the first Swiss stock exchange.
As well as its prestigious universities, Zurich offers many other unique opportunities and experiences to postgraduate students. The Kunsthaus Zürich is one of Europe’s foremost art galleries, showcasing work by the likes of Monet, Rodin and van Gogh.
Zurich plays host to several major European music, art and film festivals and has a vibrant nightlife. Beyond the city lies the chance to explore some of Switzerland’s most beautiful landscapes and natural attractions, including Lake Zurich, alongside which the city lies.
Zurich also enjoys strong transport links, which, together with its proximity to borders with Germany, Liechtenstein and France, makes the city an excellent base from which to visit other parts of Europe.
Universities in Zurich
Finance and banking continue to be a significant component of Zurich’s economy, but the city is becoming increasingly renowned as a research and training centre. Its oldest university, the University of Zurich, is also the largest in Switzerland. Established as a university in 1833, it actually traces its origins to a theological college founded in 1525 and is usually held to be one of the best universities in Europe.
Other higher education providers in Zurich include the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (one of the largest technical training institutions in Switzerland) and ETH Zurich. The latter is globally renowned and typically ranked amongst the 20 best universities in the world, with particular excellence in engineering, science and technology. Its alumni include a substantial number of Nobel Prize winners in these fields, including Albert Einstein, who both studied and taught at ETH Zurich.
Careers in Zurich
Zurich is one of the world’s top economic centres, playing an important role as the base for many international banks and financial institutions. Biotechnology and life sciences are all strong business sectors for the city. Companies based in Zurich include the Zurich Insurance Group (somewhat unsurprisingly), Credit Suisse and the ABB Group.
