Lausanne is a picturesque city in the French-speaking canton of Vaud, in western Switzerland. It is home to several important universities and other higher education institutions and attracts large numbers of foreign students.
Situated on the banks of Lake Geneva, near to the Swiss Alps, Lausanne has always been a popular destination for tourists and travellers in Europe. Its culture has been shaped by various periods of immigration from surrounding European countries, giving it a cosmopolitan character that is well suited to a modern university city.
Postgraduate students in Lausanne enjoy access to these high-quality institutions along with the benefits of studying in an open-minded, internationally diverse city situated in one of the most attractive parts of Europe.
Lausanne has a proud sporting heritage: it’s home to the International Olympics Committee, as well as the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the Olympic Museum and various other international sporting federations.
The city is also an excellent base from which to visit other parts of Europe, including nearby France and Italy. Getting around Lausanne itself is easy, thanks to the convenient metro system (Lausanne is probably the smallest city in the world with a rapid transit network).
The oldest university in the city is the University of Lausanne (UNIL), which was first established as a school of theology in 1537. Today UNIL is generally ranked as a global top 200 university and is renowned for the quality of its business programmes.
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) is a research institute that specialises in science and technology-based subjects, and is typically ranked among the very best of its kind in the world.
Business and economics as a whole are particularly strong subjects at Lausanne’s university institutions, drawing upon its international makeup. The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) is located in the city, offering a triple-accredited MBA programme that is generally regarded as being one of the best in the world.
Despite its relatively small size, Lausanne is home to the headquarters of several successful multinational businesses, including Nespresso, food packing company Tetra Laval and computer peripheral specialists Logitech. Along with the many international organisations based in the city, this makes Lausanne an attractive place for ambitious postgraduates to pursue a career.
