The capital of Poland, and its largest city, Warsaw is one of the great metropolitan cities of Europe with a proud and often turbulent history. Today the city is a vibrant hub of culture, business and science and home to major research universities alongside many other higher education institutions.
What’s it like to study a Masters in Warsaw?
One of Europe’s largest cities, Warsaw is characterised by cultural and architectural diversity with no shortage of attractions, restaurants, shopping and nightlife.
Warsaw suffered greatly during the Second World War when it was used as a Jewish ghetto. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and general Warsaw Uprising were savagely put down: overall 800,000 people lost their lives and 85% of the city was destroyed.
This tumultuous past means that the modern has a varied selection of different of architecture, with examples ranging across nearly every European style. The Old Town of Warsaw is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the few areas of the city to survive from its pre-war period – its narrow streets and old town houses cluster around the Old Town Market Square where a sculpture of the City’s symbol, a mermaid, resides.
In addition to the Old Town, Warsaw is famous for its Palace of Culture and Science (a huge Soviet-era building containing, among other things, theatres, a cinema, and bistros). The city also hosts many museums, including the Polish National Museum, the Warsaw Rising Museum, the Copernicus Science Centre and the Fryderyk Chopin Museum.
Warsaw has a great reputation for city activities: there are plenty of food markets (local delicacies include Warsaw-style dumplings, herring and jellied pork knuckle), trendy shopping streets, and a vibrant nightlife along the Vistula River boulevards and in the famous Praga district.
Universities in Warsaw
The University of Warsaw is one of the most prestigious in Poland, offering courses across a broad range of disciplines. This public university boasts five Nobel Laureates, close to 50,000 students (a large number of which are international), and a reputation for high quality research. Although most of its teaching is done in Polish, there are several courses that are delivered in English.
A second major university of the city, the Warsaw University of Technology, is the oldest technical university of Poland and considered one of the best in Europe. It has over 30,000 students and specialises in Computer Science, Administration and Management. All courses are taught in English.
There are many other higher education institutions in Warsaw, including Vistula University (specialising in Business and Management), Kozminiski University (a private Business school) and the Medical University of Warsaw, among several others.
Careers in Warsaw
Warsaw today is regarded as an excellent location for investment and economic growth, with a large amount of office and retail space available. Warsaw also has strong travel links to many key destinations across Europe and the world. A major operational centre of the bank J.P. Morgan is based in the city.
