An MBA, or ‘Master of Business Administration’, is an elite qualification for business professionals. It focuses on developing your leadership skills and initiative so you can reach those high-flying careers in management and entrepreneurship. MBAs are highly vocational, so they focus on practical problem solving and honing your existing leaderships skills.
The MBA is a professional qualification and lasts between one and two years. They are offered in a number of formats, including part-time and Executive MBA (EMBA) courses, which will be longer than your standard MBA, as well as shorter versions such as Accelerated MBA programmes, which only require a single year of very intensive study.
These programmes are highly competitive so you may be asked to complete a standardised admissions test (the two most common are the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)), write an application essay and attend an interview as part of the admissions process.
MBAs require work experience in the sector, so you should have some involvement in business or management before you apply. It might also be worth asking your current employer for sponsorship as MBA programmes can have annual fees of over £20,000 and you may be able to fit studying around your current role.
