What's it like to study a Masters in Beirut?
In the middle of the 20th century, Beirut was known as ‘The Paris of the Middle East’ with its rapid growth in the field of banking and tourism. The financial sector is still one of the country’s leading economic centres. Beirut’s architecture and culture have been influenced numerous civilisations that have shaped the city’s 5,000-year history and helped develop a unique and varied profile reflected in Beirut’s art, music, literature and cuisine.
The city is home of the Centre Ville, the country’s major cultural, financial, administrative and leisure hub, whose selection of heritage sites and contemporary attractions will ensure you have a long list of options to explore.
Important Beirut landmarks and monuments can be visited via several pedestrian routes weaving through the Centre Ville. Found here, the ancient ‘Tell Area’ includes archaeological remains from the Roman, Byzantium, Ottoman era and the Crusades. Visitors can also enjoy a walk to the ancient Roman Baths, or wander through terraced gardens, olive and pine groves to the 19th century crusader church St. Louis Cathedral. Other places to visit (or perhaps even research as part of your course!) include the National Museum of Beirut, and the Archaeological Museum of the American University of Beirut.
Universities in Beirut
The American University of Beirut is one of the most renowned higher education institutions in the region. With over a fifth of the student population consisting of international students, it boasts a diverse and stimulating student experience. The university also hosts its own Archaeology Museum, the 3rd oldest museum in the Middle East.
St Joseph University of Beirut is usually ranked as the second-best university in Lebanon. Its participation in global exchange programmes and the offer of scholarship opportunities for scholarships for French-speaking Masters students make it an attractive choice for international study.
The official language of Lebanon is Lebanese Arab but almost 40% of the population speak French, while English is gaining popularity in the business and academia.
