“The more you put into the Bayes experience, the more you will get out.”
Anamika Singh is reflecting on her time on the MSc Finance at Bayes Business School and offering advice to future students:

“I would encourage them to fully immerse themselves in this experience, engage with the faculty, participate in societies, and take advantage of the networking opportunities. Bayes offers a wealth of resources, and the more you put into the experience, the more you will get out.”

Anamika was looking for a UK-based postgraduate degree to help progress her career in Finance.
Taught by world-leading faculty and industry experts, the MSc Finance programme prepares students for a career in global finance, in sectors such as hedge funds, financial services and investment banking.

“I received several offers from other leading business schools, and I was a bit confused as to which one to choose because they all ranked well. But when I talked to employers and to alumni, they said Bayes has a good reputation. It was a very tough call, but Bayes stood out because of its strong reputation in finance and its central London location, which provides unparalleled access to the financial heart of Europe. Having spent my time there, I wouldn't trade it with anywhere else.”

“When people ask where I studied, they recognise Bayes and that makes me very happy. It gives you a sense of validation.”

Before taking the MSc, Anamika was working as a lead audit associate with EY in India, where she was involved in statutory audits and internal control assessments. She had a clear vision for what she wanted from her master’s at Bayes.

“I wanted to deepen my understanding of the financial principles and gain a more sophisticated grasp of topics like corporate finance, valuations, and asset management. Coming from a background in commerce and accounting, I was looking for a course that would not only enhance my technical knowledge, but which also equipped me with practical skills like financial modelling and international finance, which are essential for a career in finance.”

Gaining new skills and applying the learning
“The best part of the course for me was the coursework which was set alongside our modules. This focused on the practical application of the theoretical knowledge we were taught in class. Having the opportunity to apply that learning to real-world case studies gave a great insight into how Finance would look when we enter

Current role: Investment Solutions Sales, EFG Asset Management (EFGAM), Monaco

I completed my undergraduate degree in Business Studies at the Business School in 2007, before working as a Broker at Berkley Futures in London for four years. I enjoyed it, but I wanted to make a career change into finance. I decided to go back to study for an MSc in Investment Management to acquire the knowledge that would help me develop my career. As I knew the school and had already studied there, it was an easy decision to make.

I really enjoyed the programme. I liked the practical focus of the MSc, particularly the classes with Dr Nick Motson, which were very interactive. Every aspect of the classes provided the technical background, which was then supported with practical examples. As a result, I was able to put the theory into practise straight away. This approach came in handy when I first started out on my new career. Later, after I completed the MSc, I found the knowledge we covered very useful, relevant and applicable. Whenever I had questions at the beginning of my career, it was easy to go back to my lecture notes to quickly find the answers I was looking for and apply them to my real-world role.

For me, one of the highlights of the programme was the international elective on asset location in New York. I really enjoyed spending time over there and having the opportunity to embrace the practical elements and visit institutions such as JP Morgan. We covered a great deal on creating the right portfolio, which was very valuable. Again, I think it helped me quite a lot, as I’m still applying and using the knowledge I learned.

My cohort was great and I met a nice group of friends, and we still keep in touch today as we progress in our career.

I met with the careers team towards the end of the programme. They helped me to polish my CV and gave me some useful tips and insights on applications. My time at the Business School gave me more insight into what I wanted to do with my career. It enabled me to understand that I wanted to focus on the market and it definitely helped me to achieve my goals.

Soon after my MSc I started work at EFG in private banking, as an Assistant to one of the Relationship Managers. Last year, I had the opportunity to move into the Asset Management Company Investment Solutions Desk. Now, I work in Investment Solution Sales with EFG Asset Management in Monaco.

I embarked on this career change

I completed my undergraduate Maths degree at City, University of London and wanted to pursue a career as an actuary. Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) was the best choice for me. As one of the finest business schools in the world, I hoped it would offer me an open career path into one of the major organisations in London. Bayes is also the only school in London that offers an MSc in Actuarial Science.

I managed to secure a scholarship from Bayes, which helped me to cover the high cost of living in London and part of my tuition fees, which was very important for me.

The teaching staff are outstanding. Many professors hold high positions in investment banks and other important organisations, and I had the privilege of working with many well-respected academics and professionals that represent top firms in their industry. It was an amazing opportunity to interact with people who have so much experience and so much to teach you. They want you to reach your limit and achieve your goals – and they know how to do it, because they are successful people who have already been there.

The modules were very practical, and have enabled me to apply my learning to what I do now. For example, I did modules in pensions, and machine learning and contingencies. These provided me with a strong basis and understanding of all the business concerns that are applied to my work.

Every day is a different challenge. The programme is very demanding. It constantly tests your ability and encourages you to fulfil your potential. You are exposed to a wide range of challenges, tasks, environments and group projects with strict deadlines. To meet them, you develop certain skills and abilities, such as persistence, cooperation, hard work and attention to detail. It gave me some remarkable experiences that I will never forget. I have met some great people with lots of talent and intelligence and have made many special friendships, with both professors and students.

The careers team offered me great advice and helped me to recognise my personality and abilities, and how they relate to the recruitment process, which I think helped me to secure my current job. They also organised many guest lecturers from different corporations, which helped me to understand how to connect with senior personnel, and how to get in touch with them.

One of the highlights of the programme was the careers fair. It was one of the most exciting experiences, because I manage

Why did you become interested in studying supply chain management?
I had a previous master’s degree in Industrial Engineering which I graduated from in 2011, but for over 7 years my career had always been centered around supply chain so I promised myself to get an MBA that will focus on supply chain to ensure my real-life experience matched the classroom experience. I started trying to pursue this dream in 2014 and had so many obstacles that did not allow me to take the leap and later I realised that most MBA programs had no supply chain route, so I decided to then pursue another master’s degree specifically in supply chain management.

The Business School (formerly Cass) was one of the main universities in the UK that had a master’s specialising in supply chain management, and who would not love to study in London? Especially after doing my two previous degrees in Stillwater, Oklahoma USA. I was excited about the opportunity to live and study in London and explore Europe.

My favourite class was the Supply Chain module with Dr Son Byung-Gak and the Supply Chain Analytics module with Dr Dimitris Paraskevopoulos. Both classes had in-class activities that made the class memorable and very interactive and you even remember the situations while writing the exams.

I was one of the class representatives and course representatives for the MSc DigitalSupply Chain Management. That also helped me bring the needs of my fellow students to the University officials and explore how best to ensure their experience at the Business School is memorable, unique, and unforgettable.

Our class also got the chance to represent the Business School at the CILT competition for the first time where we came 3rd. Very exciting and we were only able to achieve that by using everyone’s individual strength at every aspect of the games. It was so much fun! I absolutely enjoyed working and hanging out with my cohort, it was never a dull moment.

I am now working as a Supply Chain Manager for Amazon Fresh. As the Supply Chain Manager, you are the bridge between retail, the vendors and the FC’s. I also get to work on projects to deliver new reports which will help the business overall. A career in supply chain means there is never a dull moment and you are left to work with different issues every day. Dr Son Byung-Gak, my supply chain professor at the business school, always said supply chain is all about managing uncertainty and looking for a win-win situat

I’m a numbers person, a finance person.

My undergraduate degree at EBS Business School in Germany was an economics course with a specialisation in aviation. Following my degree, I worked for Lufthansa in the fuel efficiency department, evaluating how the airline could save fuel and perform better with technology and through the use of alternative fuels over crude oil. I was therefore fascinated by the fuel and electricity industries and how they are evolving.

When my project for Lufthansa came to an end, I started looking for a degree that would cover all my topics of interest: finance, energy and oil. I was excited to discover the MSc in Energy, Trade and Finance. It is a truly unique course and London is a great place to pursue a career in finance.

the Business School and my alma mater have a partnership and some of my fellow bachelor’s cohort had gone on to study at the Business School. I’d heard good feedback from them, so before starting, I already felt a personal connection.

My finance lectures were excellent. I particularly liked the hands-on trading games. I really valued the practical industry experience, such as the Bloomberg terminal and the Excel modelling class. I still find that modelling class helpful in my consulting job today.

I enjoyed the breadth of the studies; I profited from the interconnected way of studying, as that’s the way the world works. For example, I found my module in political risk management eye-opening and one of my favourite classes was the M&A module, which fell slightly outside the core focus of my studies.

In my third term, I travelled to Madrid for an infrastructure project investment course. The subject was directly related to my work in project investment at Lufthansa. I liked the fact that this module was mixed with other courses and found it to be a good bonding experience with fellow students. Plus, who wouldn’t want to visit Madrid as part of their studies?

In my first term, I started investigating my future career options - a module in itself. I joined a few talks and evening events which were helpful in deciding what to do with my career and figuring out which industry I wanted to work in. I spent a lot of time with the careers team. I joined every careers session I could to learn about applications: workshops, assessment centre training and one-to-one sessions. The application process is very different in my native Germany.

Currently, I work as a busine

What motivated you to study MSc Corporate Finance at Bayes Business School?

Coming from a BA (Hons) programme in Financial Services, I had a solid foundation in corporate finance, and I wanted to delve deeper into the world of ECM (Equity Capital Markets) and M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions). I was ready to learn and gain practical experience through my master’s programme. I chose to study MSc Corporate Finance at Bayes Business School because of its global ranking in finance and the opportunity it offered to build a network in the city.

How did you find the course?

I enjoyed my experience on the course. The classes taught by Dr Sonia Falconieri, Dr Nick Motson, and Dr Dirk Nitzsche were particularly engaging and informative. Their expertise and passion for the subject made the learning experience truly valuable.

How did your master’s have an impact on your career?

My master’s degree played a vital role in kick-starting my career. While studying for my final exams, I secured my first role in equity sales. After that, the reputation of Bayes Business School helped me transitioning to consulting and, more recently, to the intelligence world. I had regular interactions with the Postgraduate Careers Team. They were helpful with my CV, cover letters, and interview preparations.

Any advice for prospective MSc Corporate Finance students?

For students considering studying their master's at Bayes, my advice would be to make the most of all the available resources during your programme. The Postgraduate Careers Team is there to support you, so don't hesitate to seek their assistance. Attend all the relevant networking events to start building your professional network early on. By doing so, you will have a smoother transition into your career after graduation.

The main reason for me coming to Bayes Business School was due to its actuarial expertise and attractive location (situated at the heart of the business centre of Europe!). I was given a platform to build my soft skills along with technical skills.

The diversity at Bayes was also remarkable where I interacted with students from many nationalities and learnt from their cultures. Moreover, the career development centre is a real asset for the students, they went well beyond my expectations to deliver quality advice in a pandemic-hit world.

Prior to studying MSc Actuarial Management, I worked for 3 years with PwC as a Senior Associate within their Risk Modelling Services. I predominantly worked on non-life insurance projects. The MSc in Actuarial Management was very relevant to the actuarial skills used in the industry and offered hands on experience.

Other than the subjects which provide exemption from IFoA examination, several other elective modules helped in my technical development. I particularly liked the business analytics module I took in term 3 which was very challenging and provided the breadth needed for an actuary looking to divulge in new exciting areas.

I am now a Senior Actuarial Analyst at Zurich Insurance and part of the P&C Actuarial Reserving Team, working on the IFRS 17 Project. IFRS 17 is a new International Financial Reporting Standard which will fundamentally change the way entities account for insurance and investment contracts.

I will work closely with the wider project team both in the UK and the wider Zurich Group, as well as with the UK Reserving teams to continue the development of the process and to understand and interpret results, helping to bring insights to senior stakeholders such as the UK Chief Reserving Actuary, UK Finance Controller and UK CFO.

For anyone considering a master’s at Bayes, I would suggest whilst assessing the pros and cons – please do add a lot of weight to the advantage of ‘Life in London’ apart from study and career.

This added benefit of Bayes Business School location will not only give you access to meet a great set of people, diverse in both culture and previous experience held, but also allows you to join the powerful alumni network that Bayes Business School has!
