About the University of Montpellier

A strong cultural and historical heritage

The University of Montpellier is among the very first European universities. Students have the opportunity to discover the oldest operational faculty of medicine in Europe, dating back to 1220 or visit the Montpellier botanical garden, the oldest one in France.

Connected to the world

The University of Montpellier has developed numerous international academic partnerships and welcomes over 9000 European and international students. The University works closely with Campus France and has been awarded the “Welcome to France” label for the quality of its support for European and international students.

An innovative research-intensive learning environment

As a French university of excellence and a research-intensive institution, the University of Montpellier works with over 100 laboratories and hosts 4000 permanent researchers. The UM offers a multidisciplinary environment with innovative pedagogy enabling students to acquire a wide range of skills.

Extensive international postgraduate offers in English:

International and European students can choose from various postgraduate courses taught in English within the IDIL Graduate Program. IDIL introduces students to the world of research and promotes interdisciplinarity around the three main pillars of the University: To Feed, To Care and To Protect. After completing the IDIL Graduate program, students develop unique profiles preparing them for careers in research or other professional settings.

In addition, as a Graduate Program, IDIL also funds 10 interdisciplinary doctoral contracts each year.

The University of Montpellier supports students throughout their academic journey by organising integration events and working closely with many student associations. The University welcomes over 50 000 students, 9000 of whom are international students from 156 different nationalities. This creates a particularly rich and diverse learning environment. Throughout the year, students are invited to take part in numerous on-campus sport and cultural activities.

Within the IDIL Graduate Program, students begin their academic journey with the IDIL summer school: a dedicated integration week with conferences, fun activities and a student gala. This is also a great opportunity to connect with other IDIL students, professors and mentors. During the year, IDIL students can take part in the IDIL house cup. Students are assigned to a house and take part in fun activities to earn points. At the end of the year, the winning house receives a prize. For more information about this, check out our Instagram.

Beyond the University, the cosmopolitan city of Montpellier, located in the Occitanie region, offers an exceptional Mediterranean lifestyle. Voted one of the best student cities in France, Montpellier hosts many international cultural and festive activities all year round. With over 1000 years of history, the city is surrounded by parcs, nature and the sea. It is also an innovative city where students can benefit from free public transportation.
