The study of English at the University of St Andrews has a long and distinguished history that is sustained in the scholarly, critical, and creative dynamism of today's School of English. In the present day, the School enjoys an international reputation as a centre for both academic research and literary creativity. In the 2008 RAE, the School had 70% of its research and writing rated as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'. The School's richest inheritance, however, is its collegiality: we pride ourselves on our friendliness, and on our common enthusiasm for great literature.

Postgraduate students are an integral part of this research-intensive school. At any one time there is a community of more than 80 students reading for either MLitt, MFA, MPhil or PhD degrees in English. Research students' work covers the broadest ranges within English, American and Commonwealth literature, while taught MLitt degrees include Creative Writing, Mediaeval English, Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture, Romantic/Victorian Studies, Shakespeare and Renaissance Literary Culture, and Women, Writing and Gender.

The hub of the postgraduate community is 66 North Street, an early nineteenth-century building entirely given over to English postgraduates. It offers benchrooms of networked computers for all postgraduates and shared office-space for more senior PhD students as well as a common room, kitchen and lovely private garden, all within five minutes' walk of both the School and the University Library.

All research postgraduates are associate members of at least one of the School's four research groups:

Medieval and Renaissance
18th Century, Romantic and Victorian
Modern and Contemporary
Creative Writing

The School of Psychology at St Andrews is a world class department with a long and distinguished history and excellent modern facilities. There are currently 27 members of academic staff all of whom are research active.

As well as succeeding in the 2008 RAE, the School was in the top category in each one of the previous research assessments. This was an achievement held by only three other departments of psychology, Cambridge, Oxford and York. The School has similarly been graded as ‘excellent’ (pdf) in each teaching review.
