University of Northampton

I recently moved to the UK from my home in Ireland, to get my Master’s degree at the University of Northampton. You may ask – what was so special about Northampton, or why this university? Well…I had always planned to get my Master’s degree, and if possible, right after my undergraduate degree. I did my undergraduate in Psychology in my home city and had begun researching my options for postgraduate study by the middle of my degree.

The University of Northampton offers great postgraduate courses in my area of interest. My course stood out to me because it was 2 years parttime, allowing time to work and engage in lots of other activities, which was important to me. The length being only 2 years rather than 3-4 years as I’ve seen in other universities, allows me to gain the remainder of my experience in the working world, which I liked because I was fresh out of my full-time undergraduate degree. Northampton was also one of very few places to have this specialisation built into the programme. So, if I was to find the perfect course, I’d say this is it.

“Attending an open day at the University of Northampton was a pivotal moment. I met with the course lead, as well as the lecturers and many others, so got an understanding of their teaching styles and passion for the course. There were many places I could have chosen, but this experience left me with a strong, positive gut reaction about the University.

The level of support I received from the University staff was unparalleled. From the application process to any pre-arrival questions, the lecturers and administrative staff were extremely helpful compared to other universities I’d applied to. It was clear that it was an institution that values
its students.

What truly set this course apart for me though was the support from the lecturers during my studies. No matter what the problem, whether it was
academic, personal, financial or logistical, they were always there to guide me. From day one, asking for help was not just accepted, but encouraged by everyone. The academic team went beyond their roles as educators, acting as mentors who genuinely cared about my success. Their support during out of office hours, as well as their feedback, one-on-one discussions, and advice on career paths, was invaluable.”

I chose this course because of its strong academic reputation, industry-relevant curriculum, and emphasis on practical application. As a Fellow member of ACCA, I wanted a master’s programme that would complement my professional qualifications, whilst deepening my expertise in key areas such as corporate governance, financial strategy, investment analysis, and sustainability reporting.

One of the most rewarding aspects was the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world financial and business challenges. I particularly enjoyed modules like Global Financial Strategy, Corporate Reporting, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Governance, as they provided deep insights into risk management, regulatory compliance, and sustainable finance – areas that are critical in today’s financial landscape.

My studies significantly enhanced both my career and personal development. Academically, the programme deepened my expertise in corporate governance, compliance, financial strategy, and sustainability reporting, all of which are directly relevant to my current role.

On a personal level, the experience honed my critical thinking, adaptability, and research skills, particularly through my dissertation on ESG reporting. The exposure to diverse perspectives, case studies, and faculty mentorship has helped me to approach complex challenges with a more strategic mindset.

Several skills and concepts that I gained from my degree directly contribute to my current role, including:

- Regulatory Compliance and Corporate Governance – my studies in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Governance equipped me with a strong foundation to handle compliance, risk, and regulatory frameworks

- Financial Analysis and Reporting – modules like Corporate Reporting and Global Financial Strategy refined my ability to analyse financial statements, assess risk, and develop strategic financial insights

- Research and problem-solving – my dissertation sharpened my ability to analyse trends, conduct in-depth research, and apply findings to real-world financial and governance challenges

- Adaptability and time management – managing a demanding coursework schedule, especially after joining as a late entry, strengthened my ability to quickly adapt and efficiently manage my time – an essential skill in a fast-paced compliance environment.
