Manchester University was one of the forerunners in the development of computing, with the first stored program machine being built here in 1948 by Professors Tom Kilburn, Freddie Williams and Geoff Tootill.
Since that time, there has always been high quality innovative research in computing at Manchester. The School developed out of these activities and was one of the earliest Computer Science Departments to be founded.
The School of Computer Science offers a range of flexible, stimulating and exciting undergraduate programmes, all supported by world class staff and facilities. We provide a learning environment that supports students with no previous computing experience, whilst at the same time challenging those who are already familiar with the subject.
Manchester is also renowned for its innovative approach to MSc teaching. Our size and research strength enable us to offer a combination of breadth, depth and flexibility that is difficult to find elsewhere. Students are free to shape their own programmes by choosing from a wide spectrum of computer science and interdisciplinary topics. Students opting for the Advanced Computer Science programme can either opt to follow the standard programme or to flavour their MSc by choosing a particular pathway. Pathways enable students to graduate from the long established and highly respected ACS programme together with a recognition of their specialisation.
Computer Science Research at Manchester brings together an understanding of foundations, technologies and applications.
We have research groups operating across the spectrum, from fundamental theory and innovative technology, through novel hardware and software systems design, to leading-edge applications. Few universities in the world are able to offer the same breadth of expertise.
Our student to PC ratio is better than 5:1 and you'll find a wide range of PC laboratories across campus and PC clusters in and around Halls of Residence. Rooms in Halls are networked and free internet provided in most.
The School also has its own dedicated teaching laboratories. We currently host the largest Supercomputing Centre in Europe with many massively parallel machines and a super massive storage facility.
The School of Earth, Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences has an international reputation as one of the leading Earth Science teaching and research institutions in Britain. The large complement of academic staff, representing a wide range of experience and expertise, means that the School is well placed to offer a spectrum of postgraduate degree programmes, and to provide authoritative teaching across the breadth of the subject. The continued top-rating for its research activities (RAE Grade 5) means that the School’s academic staff are at the forefront of research in their respective fields, and can promote the links between current research and teaching.

All programmes are normally one year and may only be taken on a full-time basis. There are seven months of taught modules (normally September to April) which requires attendance on intensive taught units which are assessed through continuous assessment project work. This is followed by a research project lasting five months (normally May to September). The research project provides an opportunity for students to specialise and gain hands-on experience in designing, implementing and presenting a substantial piece of original research. Wherever possible we encourage students to involve outside organisations in the planning and implementation of their research projects.
We are one of the largest schools of this discipline in the UK, and as such we are home to a full range of activities within the spectrum of electrical and electronic engineering.
The great breadth and depth of the research interests of our academic staff ensures a very high standard of lecture courses and provides excellent opportunities for challenging and stimulating projects.

The School of Environment and Development (SED) was created in 2004 as part of the new University of Manchester, combining the Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM) with the disciplines of Architecture, Geography, and Planning & Landscape.
SED is a major centre for postgraduate education. The School has a complement of 500 taught masters students and over 100 research students. Our postgraduates come from all over the world and are funded from a variety of sources, including School Studentships, teaching assistantships, Commonwealth Scholarships, Chevening Scholarships, ESRC Studentships and Overseas Student Scholarships.
The School offers over twenty taught masters programmes and MPhil/PhD degrees in areas spanning human geography, physical geography, urban and regional planning, development policy and management, and development studies, and in particular in topics such as Urban and Regional Development, Globalisation, Environmental Impact Management, International Development, and Human Resource Management/Development.
Whatever the subject area all our Masters Programmes are aimed at developing a ‘learning to learn’ capacity and independent, critical thinking skills combined with academic rigour and access to leading-edge thinking and research.
A variety of learner-centred teaching methods and study facilities are combined to give students a rich and varied learning experience and the opportunity to excel in their chosen areas of study. The School has long experience of promoting learning with students from diverse cultures and backgrounds and recognises this as a valuable resource.
Materials are at the heart of the modern world and, as the largest single materials focus in Europe, we are at the forefront of developing the science behind them.
At the School, we encompass a unique and exceptional breadth of research and training in materials – from polymers, textiles, metals and composites, to nuclear science, aerospace technology and cutting-edge fashion and design management – and these activities are built on our global reputation for excellence and award-winning research.
We are supported by leading research councils and organisations worldwide, and many fund specialist centres in the School to focus on ground-breaking research topics.
Current specialist research centres include the Materials Performance Centre, the Northwest Composites Centre, and the William Lee Innovation Centre.
Our academics are world-leaders in their field of research, and many of our research areas are consistently awarded the highest possible rating of 5* in the UK Research and Assessment Exercise. Our substantial research income supports more than 150 research students and 60 postdoctoral research assistants – in turn generating exciting and innovative research opportunities spanning the breadth of materials.

To underpin the research and teaching activities, we have established state-of-the-art laboratories, which allow comprehensive characterisation and development of materials. These facilities range from synthetic/textile fibre chemistry to materials processing and materials testing.
To complement our teaching resources, there is a comprehensive range of electrochemical, electronoptical imaging and surface and bulk analytical facilities and techniques.
The School of Mathematics is the largest in the UK with an outstanding research reputation and facilities.
Many research seminars are held in the School on a weekly basis and allow staff and research students to stay in touch with the latest developments in their fields. The School is one of the lead partners in the MAGIC project and research students can attend any of the postgraduate courses offered by the MAGIC consortium
There are many opportunities both for research PhD and MPhil programmes and for taught MSc and Diploma programmes. We currently have nearly 200 postgraduate students working in a wide variety of different fields. The School currently disburses more than a million pounds per annum towards the funding of postgraduate students, including more than half a million pounds of EPSRC funding, and substantial funding from other institutions including the European Commission and UK government ORS awards
The School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a rich engineering heritage and a tradition of excellence in research, teaching and links with industry. We have over 100 members of academic staff in the School supported by dedicated professional and technical support staff. The School has over 800 taught postgraduate students and over 250 postgraduate research students.
The School performed very well in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) with our impact case submissions being ranked 3rd in the UK in grade point average (GPA) for both Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and Civil & Construction Engineering. This is an excellent achievement that highlights the practical nature of our research, our success with industry and our ability to influence government policy.
We have a range of accredited postgraduate taught MSc courses, which are designed to support both research activities and industrial needs. The range of research topics studied by our students cover all areas of engineering, and includes theoretical and computational research, experimental studies, systems, design and management. Our work is applicable to diverse industry sectors and interests, for example: aerospace, manufacturing, civil, structural, process industries, medical, nano-engineering, energy, environment, transport and nuclear. We have an extensive range of interests within which cross-disciplinary work can flourish.

We are proud of Manchester's outstanding historical record of achievements in science and engineering. First among these is probably our discovery of the atomic nucleus by Ernest Rutherford, who was Professor of Physics here. During his time at Manchester, Rutherford also performed the first "artificial" nuclear reaction, which marked the beginning of nuclear physics.
Today, we remain a leading centre for research in nuclear and elementary particle physics. For example, Manchester physicists are helping to run experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which have recently discovered a Higgs particle, thought to be responsible for the origin of mass, and which will go on to solve some of the mysteries of anti-matter.
Astronomy also has an illustrious heritage and vibrant current research programme here. There world-famous Jodrell Bank telescope is part of our School and has been used to discover the first gravitational lens, the first celestial maser and more pulsars than any other telescope.
Our condensed matter physicists lead the world in studying the properties of graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms - production of this material and characterisation of its unusual properties led to the 2010 award of the Nobel Prize in Physics to Sir Andre Geim and Sir Kostya Novoselov.
Being a large school with over 150 academic and research staff, our research covers a very rich portfolio over most sub-fields of physics, ranging from fundamental areas to interdisciplinary projects that reach beyond the subject and more applied research programmes. We have internationally leading research programmes that include atomic, nuclear, particle and accelerator physics; condensed matter and soft matter physics; laser and photon physics, low temperature physics; biological physics; complexity and non-linear physics; and astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. Experimental and theoretical physicist work together on many of these research activities.
The University of Manchester has recently opened the National Graphene Institute. The £61m, 7,600 square metre building houses state-of-the-art facilities, including two ‘cleanrooms’ – one which takesup the whole of the lower ground floor – where scientists can carry out experiments and research without contamination.
The £60 million pound Alan Turing building has been built immediately adjacent to the refurbished Schuster building. The design for features multi-functional high-tech, open plan laboratories and central meeting areas to promote interaction, openness and co-operation between the disciplines.
The main Physics building, the Schuster Building, will be having an extension built starting in September 2015 and will provide more space for students and staff and "ideas mill".
Throughout the School students are able to access a wide array of sophisticated equipment and benefit from the most up to date facilities.
The School of Social Sciences is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in research and teaching across Economics, Politics, Philosophy, Social Anthropology, Social Statistics, Sociology and Census and Survey Research. The breadth of expertise in these areas fosters the groundbreaking research that staff are involved in, and an unparalleled range of degrees and programmes at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
