About University Centre of the Westfjords

UW focuses on academic quality and follows the Bologna requirements for European universities in co-operation with its domestic and foreign partner universities. UW is a young and flexible organization. Employees strive to serve the educational and research needs of the Westfjords to the fullest and to provide students and researchers outside the region, who wish to connect with the small but fascinating research environment in the Westfjords, with an excellent service.

The student life at UW is vibrant and friendly. A weekly pub quiz organized by students at the local brewery is a popular tradition, and the local coffee place serves as a hub for study sessions and group work. Students can also enjoy the many outdoor activities Ísafjörður has to offer, like skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, hiking, surfing, mountain biking, bouldering, sea swimming, and much more. Many students work alongside their studies; popular choices include cafés, restaurants, bars, the ski lodge, the bakery, after-school programs and online tutoring.

Ísafjörður is a wonderful and tightly knit community. I feel very lucky to study and live in such a unique place, close to nature and gorgeous views. Studying at UW was a great opportunity to broaden my horizons academically and to engage in enriching discussions and projects. The hands-on approach, filled with field trips and direct interaction with the study topics, is definitely refreshing and captivating. Being able to kayak in the fjord and meet some seals between classes is also a very nice bonus!

Studying coastal and marine management in Isafjordur has been an incredible experience. It is amazing to be part of a small university where every experience is very personal. There are countless opportunities offered and different needs catered for through the broad syllabus. I have met many inspirational people since moving here and have enjoyed the remoteness and beauty of the fjord. I would recommend the experience to anyone that is considering applying to UW.
