London Film School is the oldest film school in the UK. For more than 65 years, LFS has been the place for emerging creative talent to hone their craft, find their voice and engage directly with the vibrant UK screen industries. The School offers three full-time MA programmes, a PhD. Film by Practice, and a full calendar of short courses. In 2022 London Film School was awarded World-Leading Specialist Provider status by the Office for Students.

Student life at London Film School

London is a diverse and vibrant city, home to nine million people and an estimated 400,000 students from over 200 countries. With its rich mix of history, culture and entertainment - studying in London is an experience like no other.

London is at the heart of a thriving film industry, with countless production companies, film studios, cinemas and postproduction houses. Thousands of creative jobs are generated by London’s screen industries and with this sector expanding, the demand for skilled crafts people and creative talent in the city is more necessary than ever.

London Film School is situated in Covent Garden, in the heart of London, within walking distance of West End theatres, cinemas and the production hubs of Soho and Fitzrovia. Nearby too, are the famous cultural landmarks of the Royal Opera House, the National Gallery, the British Museum, the British Film Institute Library, the BFI Southbank, Bertha Dochouse and Tate Modern.

Central London offers LFS students’ access to many film and media groups, events and opportunities, and there are often events for students held in collaboration with like-minded film organisations (e.g. Sundance London, DocSociety and filmmakers in the capital). Social events happen each term as well as lectures and debates, parties and subsidised travel trips in the UK and overseas film festivals and markets.

What are the entry requirements?

We welcome applications from a wide variety of candidates who can demonstrate their passion for film and meet our minimum academic or professional entry requirements. Entry requirements for our MA Filmmaking and MA Screenwriting programmes differ slightly. Full details can be found on the website. Applicants should have at least one of the following; A Bachelor’s degree with Honours (2:2 or above or international equivalent), a relevant professional qualification or substantial professional experience in film or a related area. In addition, all applicants must submit a completed application form, CV/Resume, personal statement, and additional different details for each of the programmes. Can I visit the School?

We prioritise the workspace for our students and run only scheduled 1:1 tours at the School. Please contact us on admissions@lfs.org.uk to arrange.

What bursaries or scholarships are available?

There are limited funding and scholarship opportunities available to UK, home status and International students. UK and home status students are eligible for external bursary programmes. Students are also encouraged to source alternative funding sources via the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Guide.
