Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and is situated in the north of the country, around two hours away from the border with Denmark. The city is a significant higher education hub, with 18 universities and around 100,000 resident students.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Hamburg?

Prior to the 19th century unification of Germany, Hamburg was a wealthy independent city, serving as an important European trading centre. It remains one of the busiest commercial hubs in Europe, with a huge range of companies and businesses in a variety of industries. The city’s financial legacy is also reflected in its being home to the world’s second oldest bank, operating since 1590.

Postgraduate students in Hamburg enjoy life in a historic city with a high standard of living and a rich culture. The city is home to beautiful buildings and urban features in a range of architectural styles, many of which are important heritage sites.

Its entertainment and nightlife are also vibrant, with a range of facilities ranging from modern music venues to some of Germany’s most prestigious opera houses (reflecting the fact that Hamburg is both the birthplace of Johannes Brahms and of some of Germany’s most internationally popular international rock acts). The Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg’s landmark concert hall, one of the world’s premiere opera venues.

Hamburg is also famous for its cuisine, which includes a range of local dishes and yes, these do include the famous ‘Hamburger’ – traditionally a fried meat patty (or Frikadellen) served without a bun. Other local foods acknowledge a Danish influence and all can be sampled in the city’s many bars and restaurants.

Universities in Hamburg

The largest university in Hamburg is the University of Hamburg, first established in 1919. It is usually ranked in or around the ten best German universities and also performs well in international tables.

Several of the other universities in Hamburg are more specialised. They include Helmut Schmidt University (a military training institution) and the Technical University of Hamburg, which offers a number of dedicated international postgraduate programmes.

Careers in Hamburg

Hamburg is a major economic hub and home to the third busiest port in Europe. Important business sectors in the city include the aerospace industry, maritime technology, media and life sciences. Multinational publishing company Bauer Media Group is headquartered in Hamburg, along with Nivea and an important Airbus assembly plant.
