About the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care

Our Faculty is directly descended from the Nightingale Training School for Nurses which was established at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1860 as part of Florence’s Nightingale's campaign to transform nursing and health care. The Nightingale Training School was the first non-religious institution to provide professional nurse training.

In 1940, Dame Cicely Saunders started her career at the Nightingale Training School, before founding the worlds-first modern hospice and pioneering palliative medicine. Our Cicely Saunders Institute was also the first purpose-built institute for palliative care. It was established by King's College London and Cicely Saunders International in 2010.
