Copenhagen is Denmark’s capital and largest city. It is situated on the eastern coast of Zealand (the largest of the islands that make up Denmark along with the Jutland peninsula – not to be confused with its Australasian counterpart!) and connected to Sweden by the Øresund Bridge and tunnel. There are three universities in Copenhagen, as well as several other higher education institutions and around 150,000 students.
What’s it like to study a Masters in Copenhagen?
Copenhagen has a rich history, stretching back to the Viking Age. It has evolved from a regional fishing port into an important international trading centre and is now one of the most important hubs for global biotechnology and pharmaceutical research.
Postgraduate students in Copenhagen enjoy the benefits of studying in a European capital with lots of heritage and a wide range of landmarks, including famous examples of Rococo architecture such as the royal Danish winter palace of Amalienborg and the many historical attractions in and around the city’s harbours and canals. Most visitors to Copenhagen make a trip to the world-famous Little Mermaid statue inspired by the work of Hans Christian Andersen, as well as the historic Tivoli Gardens amusement park.
Recent years have seen Copenhagen emerge as a bike-friendly city to rival the Netherlands. You’ll see plenty of people cycling, even during the chilly winters. Although the cost of living in Copenhagen can be high, it has the quality of life to match, and is usually named among the world’s most liveable cities.
Copenhagen’s geographical situation also lends it a unique appeal, with attractive local beaches and the opportunity to explore the local Scandinavian landscape or travel to neighbouring countries including Sweden and Germany. The sweeping 8km-long Øresund Bridge connects Copenhagen with Malmö, and will no doubt be familiar to fans of Scandi-noir TV.
There is a range of student accommodation in Copenhagen, from dormitories to shared flats. It’s wise to begin your search for housing as soon as you can – your university’s accommodation office will be able to advise you on this.
Universities in Copenhagen
The oldest university in Copenhagen is the University of Copenhagen, founded in 1479 (it’s also the second oldest university in the Scandinavian region). It is usually ranked within the top 50 European universities and performs well in global tables.
Other providers of Masters courses in Copenhagen include the Copenhagen Business School, which offers a globally-renowned MBA programme.
Danish is the primary language of instruction, but increasingly Masters programmes are taught entirely in English. Indeed, you’ll notice a very high standard of English as a second language among the locals in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen has a thriving high-tech economy and is an important Northern European financial centre. Particular strengths lie in Copenhagen’s creative industries, life sciences, renewable energy and ICT sectors. The city also encourages innovative start-ups to make their home in Copenhagen.
