Cardiff School of Sport, with its 60 year history, is a recognised centre of excellence within the United Kingdom. It has established a national and international reputation for the quality of its academic, sporting and research work. The Cardiff School of Sport provides students with a setting in which they can achieve academic, sporting and professional excellence in a supportive environment.

The postgraduate programmes within the Cardiff School of Sport are contemporary in their content and meet the needs of the market and employers. Research can be undertaken within eight main subject areas: Sport Psychology, Physiology and Health, Performance Analysis, Sport Coaching, Sport Biomechanics, Sociology and Philosophy of Sport, Strength and Conditioning and Sport Management. The postgraduate teaching team bring together a wide range of academic and practitioner skills and experiences. They are at the cutting-edge of research, scholarly, professional and consultancy activities, which they draw upon to inform their teaching.

All programmes are informed by links to their respective professional bodies, for example, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), the British Psychological Society (BPS). Due cognisance is taken of developments within all of those professional organisations which is illustrated by the current mapping process being undertaken to link the degree pathway with the knowledge and understanding elements of relevant National Occupational Standards.

Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014

The Cardiff School of Sport was one of three REF returns made by the University that contributed to Cardiff Met being the leading post-1992 University for research quality.

The joint submission made by the Cardiff School of Sport and the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences at Bangor University was ranked 7th out of 51 submissions both on research power and research quality by the Times Higher Education. Significantly, in the overall quality profile for our submission to Unit of Assessment 26 (Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism), 80% of the research was rated as World Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*). The impact of our research on the world beyond academia and the research environment was entirely rated as 4* or 3*.

Additional to this the School has a thriving community of students undertaking research degrees at master’s (MPhil) and doctoral (PhD) level. A growing number of these students are in receipt of funding from a variety of funding sources and bodies.
