The MSc Veterinary Physiotherapy programme is designed to optimise and enhance the competencies of Chartered Physiotherapists to produce technically competent, effective and safe veterinary physiotherapy practitioners in line with current professional standards. Individuals will be encouraged and supported through critical reflection on the similarities and differences relating to practice in the human field of physiotherapy.

In particular the course promotes the philosophy of life-long learning and encourages students to develop their skills in critical thinking. You will be encouraged to critically analyse research and evidence and apply your findings to practice.

The course aims to help you recognise your role and responsibilities in the field of veterinary physiotherapy and animal welfare. It will enhance your clinical skills as well as your capacity to deal with complex relationships between animals, their owners/handlers and other healthcare professionals. The course will also introduce you to the legal, ethical and financial issues involved in veterinary physiotherapy/ private practice.

This part-time programme is available to registered physiotherapists who are looking to specialise in animals. Graduates from this programme will either have a Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy, which will allow them to upgrade from Category B membership of ACPAT to Category A. Once qualified, students will be eligible to set up their own business in veterinary physiotherapy or be employed in the industry.

Topics you study on this programme could include Clinical Practice, Comparative and Applied Anatomy Physiology and Biomechanics, Understanding Veterinary Diagnostics and Physiotherapy Assessment, Research Methods and Applied Business Management.

Students will also be able to complete their own research and explore their own interests by completing a postgraduate dissertation in the third year if they choose to. You will also be required to undertake periods of clinical placement and students are expected to undertake a significant amount of independent learning.

The course is offered on a part-time basis with teaching delivered in ‘blocks’ of study (each block is usually between two and four days in length and there are approximately 12 blocks of attendance per year) on both weekdays and weekends. Additionally, there will be times when students are required to attend for individual days, e.g. where assessments are scheduled.

Considering the number of animals owned and cared for in the UK and a general wish for high standards of animal health and welfare, there is now a growing need for well-educated and highly qualified, accredited VPs to provide this sort of service.

The course

We have a long history of successfully delivering animal science-related courses in conjunction with animal healthcare organisations, for individuals and their employers. This programme is another example of collaboration, this time with the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP). Delivery, therefore, will be provided by colleagues from Harper Adams, technical specialists who are members of NAVP and also specialist external academics.

The programme fulfils the need to support veterinary surgeons who treat both companion and large animals. The veterinary physiotherapist (VP) can provide this support during an animal’s recovery from injury or surgery as well as in preparation of the athletic animal. Considering the number of animals owned and cared for in the UK and a general wish for high standards of animal health and welfare, there is now a growing need for well-educated and highly qualified, accredited VPs to provide this sort of service.

This programme is delivered on a part-time basis and studied over three academic years, with students completing the taught modules within the first two years and completing the Masters Research Project within an individually negotiated timescale over one to two years.

How will it benefit me?

Veterinary physiotherapy is now well established as a mainstream treatment and offers the opportunity to become part of a growing professional community. Successful completion of this programme will provide individuals with more extensive opportunities for graduate employment as a VP in the animal health sector by developing the specific scientific, technical and business skills required. On successful completion, students will gain a recognised Higher Education postgraduate qualification as well as professional membership to NAVP, which is recognised by both practising veterinary surgeons and lead sector insurers as valid providers of specialist veterinary physiotherapy.

Overview

This exciting course is run in conjunction with the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP). The programme is designed to develop the skills of the student to support veterinary surgeons in the rehabilitation of a variety of species and will in particular focus on equine and canine patients. It will also focus on supporting equine and canine athletes both during competition and for recovery.

It is designed to enhance competency in existing therapists and to help students with less experience achieve their goal as capable and knowledgeable veterinary physiotherapists. The programme offers successful students the opportunity to become part of the existing para-professional cache of veterinary physiotherapists by developing excellent understanding and knowledge of anatomical structure in relation to function, treatment, rehabilitation of a variety of animals and of course business skills for those who plan to be self-employed.

The programme will be run on a part-time basis over three years, with the majority being delivered at weekends (11 weekends for the 1st year , 19 weekends – including internal placement weekends on site – for the 2nd year). There will be the occasional Friday that requires attendance, such as Academic Induction and examinations. The first year is quite structured and enables us to accurately predict the level of commitment required from each student to pass the modules. In the second clinical year, students differ widely in their ability to pick up and accurately apply the techniques being taught. So the requirement for self-directed practice can be substantial. There is also an increased level of contact in year 2 as students need to undertake placement days alongside the taught element, so weekends become far more frequent than during the first year. By year 3 students will be able to organise their own study time to complete the dissertation.

The first two years will comprise the Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy and if successful the student will be invited to become a member of the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists and be able to practice. The third year involves the dissertation and on completion the student will have a full MSc Veterinary Physiotherapy.

A successful veterinary physiotherapist will soon find that demand for their services outstrips their availability as there are a limited number of qualified therapists in the industry. Additionally, para-professionals in the veterinary world may soon be limited to those carrying a recognised post graduate qualification.

The suite of pain management programmes offered by the Department of Anaesthesia, Critical care and Pain Medicine, continues this tradition by integrating current clinical research with high-level academic and professional input.

Postgraduate Diploma - Level 2 (60 credits)

(not all Level 2 courses will be offered every year) On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate courses, the 60 credits at Postgraduate Diploma level allow students to select courses that focus on areas of pain management that are congruent with students' career goals and clinical or personal interests.

Through a number of course options, including, but not limited to, courses in cancer pain, medical pain, acute pain, neuropathic pain and pain in ageing populations, students will gain an advanced understanding of key areas in pain management. At this level, students may opt to begin to take courses in the areas of either headache management or veterinary medicine to gain a named PGDip or MSc award.

Master of Science - Level 3 (60 credits)

On the successful completion of 120 credits, students are able to proceed to the Master of Science level of the programme. There are a number of options at this level:

  • Fully taught option – successfully complete 60 credits from the Level 2 courses, or,
  • Successfully complete a written dissertation (60 credits), or,
  • Successfully complete a project (60 credits)

Degree Awards with a Headache or Veterinary Designation?

We also offer Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and Master of Science (MSc) awards in the focussed clinical areas of headache management and veterinary medicine.

Alongside the core pain programme content, students have the option to take a number of courses in specific clinical areas to gain the award of PGDip/MSc Clinical Management of Pain (Headache) or PGDip/MSc Clinical Management of Pain (Veterinary). To gain a named award (i.e. a Headache or Veterinary designation), students must complete at least one third of the credits of the award in the focussed area.

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD)

Postgraduate Professional Development is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course, without the time - or financial - commitment of a full Masters degree, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate. We offer short, focussed, academic credit-bearing courses that provide education on key subjects in pain management.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses through our Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) scheme. Pharmaceutical Science will appeal to those of you who want to understand how the human body functions at a molecular level and the science that we can use to manage human health.

Based in our state-of-the-art Science Centre, you will explore the biochemical and cellular make-up of the human body, investigate what happens when things go wrong through, for example disease or illness, and how these may be prevented or cured by the action of drugs.

Alongside this, you will build a clear understanding of drugs and medicines, their structures, discovery and development, their biological delivery and activity, and their testing, regulation, production and quality assurance by analytical methods.

The MSci course combines Bachelors-level and Masters-level study in one integrated programme, giving you the opportunity to undertake professional work experience or an extended research project. However, whichever degree you choose to complete, you’ll develop wide ranging specialist skills and an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical science and its industry.

Course content

In Year 1, you’ll be introduced to the theoretical principles and practical techniques of pharmaceutical science and pharmacology. You’ll study the underpinning biology and chemistry and learn about the activity of drugs on the human body.

During Year 2, you’ll look more thoroughly at the analysis and quality assurance of drugs using a range of laboratory techniques and QA methodologies. Your understanding of the human body will extend to the molecular and cellular levels, giving you the depth of knowledge to understand the functions of a healthy body and when disease and illness strike.

Between years 2 and 3 you will take the sandwich placement year. By doing this, you’ll complete a one-year placement with a company within the pharmaceutical industry specifically or a wider scientific field. You might work in drug discovery, isolating and characterising new potential drugs, undertake laboratory or clinical trials, or be involved in full scale industrial drug production that will further develop your employability skills. You will be supported by an onsite placement supervisor and receive regular visits and support from your academic supervisor too.

In Year 3, your final year, you’ll follow the complete process – from the stages involved in identifying potential new drugs, synthesising them for laboratory and then clinical trials, and subsequently, how their approval and production for commercial markets. You will also undertake independent research in an area of your choice, designing your research to probe a current issue in pharmaceutical science.

Your studies will include the foundations of mammalian embryology, detailed assessment of all infertility treatment strategies, the theoretical basis behind embryo production, embryo selection and cryopreservation, focussing on all current and future technologies associated with ART. There are 3 units dedicated to Total Quality Management, Preimplantation Diagnosis and Ethics. Overview

This 12-month, intensive course provides students with the essential postgraduate knowledge and practical skills necessary to contribute competently to human infertility clinical services. Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broad context of the regulations and the ethical considerations that apply to human IVF, both nationally and internationally, along with the quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success for IVF patients. The guidelines, protocols and regulations that steer and control human infertility services are also presented. In addition to attending lectures and self-directed study, students are required to undertake continual practical skills training and also students will undertake a minor research project. Students will not only be equipped with practical skills required for work in an IVF laboratory but also gain a greater understanding of research applications within the field of reproductive or developmental biology. Research-related tasks contribute to the overall assessment for specific coursework units.

Career opportunities

On completion of this course graduates may gain employment as clinical embryologists, or work in laboratories in embryology, health, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), or in related jobs within the reproductive biology field.

About the course

The course is aimed at students with a background in sport sciences who wish to take a broad-based degree that combines a range of self-selected modules from across the two specialist pathways: Human Performance and Sport Psychology.

It includes the module ‘Physical Activity and Health’ in which contemporary issues such as obesity and injury rehabilitation are examined from a multi and interdisciplinary perspective.

Aims

You will have significant scope to tailor a programme of study to your specific needs.

You will build upon your existing knowledge and extend your understanding of selected areas in sport, health and exercise sciences.

Assessment

Your academic performance will be assessed in a variety of ways. Assessment procedures include essays, case studies, oral presentations, poster presentations, laboratory report writing and computer-based tests. Formal written examinations constitute part of the assessment in some modules.

In addition, you will need to submit, and pass, a research dissertation.

This programme will provide the advancing healthcare professional wishing to study at Masters level the opportunity to learn the theory and practice of advanced skills in the management of complex lymphoedema, including the Casley-Smith technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

Why this programme

  • The first course will provide students with the necessary skills and the theory underpinning these and explore the evidence base. The second course will facilitate the application of these skills in more complex situations and in the context of delivering and managing a service. t will facilitate further development of skills in analysing and synthesising clinical findings and evidence for decision-making at an advanced level. 
  • The programme combines workplace learning with part-time attendance and on-line learning to explore and contextualise contemporary issues and the latest research evidence. It will prepare students to the level of a health care professional Band 7 Lymphoedema Advanced Practitioner as proposed in the Lymphoedema Framework Template for Management (Sneddon, 2007).
  • This specialist framework is based on the Skills for Health Career Framework (2007 http://www.skillsforhealth.org.uk) and the Knowledge and Skills Framework (DoH 2004).

Managing Complex Lymphoedema

Course 

This course provides the advancing health care professional wishing to study at Masters level, an opportunity to learn the advanced skills and knowledge required to manage patients with complex lymphoedema. The course will equip students with the necessary theory underpinning these skills and explore the evidence base and facilitate development of decision-making skills at an advanced level. Learning of theory is consolidated with workplace and on-line learning to do develop the skills of an advancing practitioner in this field

Course aims and Intended Learning Outcomes

This course will provide the health care professional with the opportunity to develop the theory and practice of more advanced skills in the management of complex lymphoedema including the Casley-Smith technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate appropriate and effective application of specialist knowledge and skills in Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy and discussing the rationale for each aspect of treatment in relation to altered patho-physiology;
  • critically analyse clinical practice problems relating to patients with complicated oedema, showing the ability to synthesise information to make appropriate judgements in determining the diagnosis and developing and leading individualised treatment plans;
  • critically appraise and synthesise the evidence base for Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy;
  • critically evaluate their own practice and decision-making in relation to advanced practice in the management of people with complicated oedema;
  • exercise substantial autonomy and initiative within the context of rehabilitation and a holistic approach to care but make appropriate referrals.
  • demonstrate effective and sensitive communication and provision of patient information, based on individual needs and critical awareness of factors that may influence concordance with treatment and promotion of self-management

Lymphoedema Advanced Practice

Course 

This course provides the advancing health care professional, wishing to study at Masters level, with an opportunity to extend the skills and knowledge of the Managing Complex Lymphoedema course to a range of complex lymphoedema patients in the context of the most contemporary evidence and themes. The course will facilitate the application of advanced skills in more complex situations and in the context of delivering and managing a service. It will facilitate further development of skills in analysing and synthesising clinical findings and evidence for decision-making at an advanced level. Masterclasses, seminars and workshops support further development of the skills of an advancing practitioner in this field and is consolidated with workplace and on-line learning.

Course aims and Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Plan and execute adaptation of treatment plans for patients with complex lymphoedema or advanced disease in the light of recent best evidence or changes to clinical knowledge.
  • Devise and critically evaluate a multi-professional management programme for a lymphoedema patient with multi-pathology or complex needs including critical evaluation of relevant evidence and consideration of the latest techniques and innovation.
  • Critically analyse how a current clinical question could be informed by service audit or research within practice.
  • Critically evaluate the role of the lymphoedema advanced practitioner with patients with rare presentations.
  • Critically reflect on clinical practice problems and their own practice in managing complex situations and in relation to relevant literature
  • Analyse the use of ethical frameworks in managing ethical issues and the implications for practice
  • Demonstrate a wide range of effective communication techniques and an interdisciplinary approach to determining patient priorities and planning interventions to meet the patient's holistic needs

[[Programme structure
The course will involve online lectures, seminars and tutorials and during a residential week at the end of year 1 you will take part in lab classes. You will also take part in journal clubs, presentations and self-directed learning. The programme is made up of 60 compulsary credits and 3 x 20 credit options (X,Y and Z) plus a research project (60 credits).
