Is this course for me?

The MSc Organisational Resilience is designed to meet the requirements of industry and the professionals who are either currently employed in it or who seek to develop advanced capability. There are many currently working in the sector who have long-term experience and are seeking validation and evidence of this through the achievement of postgraduate qualification.

The programme provides an opportunity for advancement to those already employed in resilience roles, for example as security, crisis or business continuity managers or heads of function, who wish to broaden their industry knowledge base and management and analytical skills with a view to enhancing their career prospects. Secondly, the programme is designed to appeal to people with general management roles and experience who are interested in moving into the resilience sector or who have been made responsible for the implementation and management of resilience within their organisation.

The MSc Top-up Advanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Practice (Resilience and Positive Development) is a researcher-practitioner degree aimed at those high intensity IAPT practitioners who want to develop a career in research and academia. It provides you with a platform to occupy senior management positions in the NHS and healthcare organisations.

The course enables you to add to your classic CBT training all the knowledge and skills required to treat clients using resilience training and the principles of positive development, as well as undertake research in these areas. You will need to enrol and successfully complete Module 6 of the PGDip Advanced CBT Practice (Resilience and Positive Development). You will then to take modules 7 and 8 to qualify for the MSc Advanced CBT Practice (Resilience and Positive Development).

The course is unique in using positive psychology principles and practice for the development of resilience and flourishing in clients with mental health issues. During the first and second year you'll have an opportunity to take part in a question-and-answer session in person with Dr Christine Padesky, and one to two online group sessions where you'll be able to discuss some client issues common to the whole group. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a master clinician.

The first module of the MSc top-up is module 6 of the PgDip (CBT interventions for the development of resilience and flourishing) and will be delivered one weekend a month. Modules 7 and 8 will take place on a weekday (usually a Monday or Wednesday).

The aim of the MRes in Urban Sustainability and Resilience is to equip students from a variety of backgrounds with the research skills, knowledge and understanding required to tackle current and future challenges faced by cities globally, including increasing the resilience of our urban systems, and the infrastructure that supports them, to shocks arising from natural, economic and technological disasters.

Degree information

Students will learn about the research process and research methodologies, and gain an understanding of policies, processes, technologies and materials available to shape the future of the urban environment. Students can specialise by selecting modules from across a wide range of different topics and disciplines. As members of the Centre for Urban Sustainability and Resilience, students will join a community of innovative researchers tackling topics across this dynamic field and will benefit from the networking opportunities of this multidisciplinary environment.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (30 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and a research project (120 credits).

Core modules - students must undertake CEGEG104 plus one other 15 credit research skills module from an approved list.

Dissertation/report

The Master of Research (MRes) in Environment, Energy and Resilience engages the latest critical thinking on risk management, critical infrastructure, public regulation, policy studies and the environmental sciences. It is designed to develop your understanding of key debates relating to environmental challenges, energy resource use and security, and the resilience and adaptability of human systems. It aims to equip you with a broad based and relevant knowledge of research approaches and methods in the interdisciplinary fields of environment and energy studies, and the social responses to issues therein.

The programme aims to prepare you for a career as a professional researcher in either academic or non-academic environments. The core training in interdisciplinary social scientific philosophy, epistemology, methodology and analysis is set within a contemporary context, allowing you to apply the wider concepts and skills introduced in the broader social scientific setting to specific topics of enquiry in environment and energy. You will be encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate your own research questions.

The Advanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Practice programme provides you with the theory and practical skills to become a qualified and competent CBT practitioner after you accrue the required contact, clinical, and supervision hours at the end of the PgDip.

The course is unique in using positive psychology principles and practice. It is an experiential course and will train you to facilitate resilience, flourishing and positive development both in yourself and your clients.

You'll have an opportunity to take part in a question-and-answer session in person with Dr Christine Padesky, and one to two online group sessions where you'll be able to discuss some client issues common to the whole group. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a master clinician.

The programme consists of 6 modules of 20 credits each (a total of 120 credits). The first 3 modules are the modules of the PgCert. These 6 modules will enable you to apply for accreditation as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

After successful completion of the PgDip you'll be able to progress to the MSc Advanced CBT Practice (Resilience and Positive Development) should you wish to develop your research skills.

Placements

You'll need to have secured a client base where you'll see depressed and anxious patients and some patients with complex presentations during the course. This can be within the NHS or within private practice. You'll need approximately 2 completed cases per module. In total you'll need 200 clinical hours of face to face contact with clients. You'll also need to organise a BABCP accredited field supervisor for one individual supervision session, equivalent to one hour, per month. As well as this throughout the course some clinical supervision will be provided by BABCP accredited supervisors at the University.

Employability

At the end of the PgDip you will be eligible to apply independently for BABCP accreditation as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist. You'll be able to practice in the NHS and in private practice.

Why study Water Hazards, Risk and Resilience at Dundee?

The MSc programme will provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to the study of natural water hazards. This will provide training in the key fundamentals of the geoscience of water hazards which underpins hazard research and assessment. Skills will be developed to allow a career in a range of environmental sectors. These include rapid hazard assessment techniques, key field skills in the geomorphological mapping of hazard zones as well as a comprehensive study of the impacts of hazards on both the landscape and human populations.

This course focuses on the physical processes that generate natural hazards through an advanced understanding of geological and environmental processes, field recognition and mapping of hazards, GIS and remote sensing techniques for mapping and modelling of hazards, risk assessment techniques as well as the social and cultural dimension of those hazards. Links with industry and practitioners in the emergency and disaster management field, including, community resilience officers, Local Authority Emergency Planning Departments, NGOs (e.g. Red Cross) and major disability and older persons charities will allow graduates to develop a range of skills and real-world expertise in preparedness and planning.

Who should study this course?

This course should appeal to graduates of geography, geoscience, environmental science, planning and related disciplines, who wish to widen their subject knowledge of natural water hazards and combine integration of science with societal impact and policy.

Funded places

Due to an initiative from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) designed to support key sectors in the Scottish economy, there are 10 fully-funded places available to eligible students starting this course in 2013/14. This covers all tuition fees associated with the MSc programme and can be held by students classified as Scottish or EU for fee purposes only. Please indicate your interest in being considered for a funded place when you apply through UKPASS.

The start date is September each year, and lasts for 12 months full time.

The Master of Research (MRes) in Environment, Energy and Resilience engages the latest critical thinking on risk management, critical infrastructure, public regulation, policy studies and the environmental sciences.

On completion of this programme, students will be able to demonstrate:

- A critical understanding of research-based literature on environment and energy across a range of disciplines.
- Comprehension of the relationships between theory and practice in the related fields of environment, energy and resilience.
- Thorough and in depth understanding of key debates relating to environmental challenges, energy resource use and security, and the resilience and adaptability of human systems.
- Detailed and comprehensive understanding of current issues in the disciplines within the theme of environment and energy studies.

The programme aims to equip students for careers as professional researchers in either academic or non-academic environments, by developing core research skills. Students will be encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate their own original research questions.

- South West Doctoral Training Centre
This MRes is accredited by the Economics & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC). It is a collaborative, interdisciplinary programme, delivered by all three universities (Bath, Bristol and Exeter), building on the research strengths of each institution through the inclusion of collaborative units (delivered jointly by the three institutions).

The MRes can be taken as a course in its own right, or as part of the 1 + 3 (MRes + MPhil/PhD) pathway, which includes further collaborative elements with the universities of Bristol and Exeter.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of this programme, successful graduates could proceed onto an MPhil/PhD in one of several areas/departments, specifically:

- School of Management
- Department of Psychology

If applying for an MRes/PhD (the 1 + 3 programme) applicants should indicate on the Application Form, their preferred MPhil/PhD route.

Risk and disaster reduction, particularly within the contexts of dealing with uncertainty and increasing resilience, are high on local, national and international agendas. The Risk, Disaster and Resilience MSc aims to meet the growing need for experts trained to analyse and provide solutions to these complex issues.

Degree information

Students will learn about and explore the characterisation, quantification, management and reduction of risk and disasters, and their associated impacts, from a diverse range of scientific, technical, socio-economic, political, environmental, ethical and cultural perspectives. They will benefit from a wide range of taught modules which form the focus of the programme.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (to the combined value of 30 credits) and an independent research project (60 credits).

Module Details

Modules are delivered in two blocks of three days which run from Tuesdays to Thursdays allowing Monday and Friday to be available for further research or for time in the office. The flexibility this provides is one of the benefits of this course.

Here are the units you will study:

Strategic Risk and Risk Behaviour: This explores the theoretical frameworks and interdisciplinary nature of risk and effective risk management in organisations. The importance of human factors and people skills in risk perception and management are also considered, examining the roles of the individuals, teams and leaders in the context of developing and implementing risk management policies and strategies.

Organisational and Environmental Risk: This unit will investigate theories of environmental and organisational risk management and the approaches that an organisation may employ to achieve these successfully. The role of environmental and organisational risk management within the context of legislation will also be explored.

Crisis Management and Governance: This unit studies the development of effective, transparent continuity and crisis planning. The challenges facing organisations in ensuring robust governance, continuity and crisis management plans, highlighting the differences between this and generic risk management will be explored. Training and exercise preparedness will also be reviewed, enabling students to design appropriate scenarios for their organisations.

Project and Research Methods: This focuses on project risk management processes, systems and technology. Central to the module is a consideration of the key challenges in the application of project risk identification and response frameworks. This will be linked to the research dissertation as a project to be managed, preparing students for the research element of the programme.

Dissertation: This unit comprises the final part of the course. You will undertake a 15,000-word management research project (dissertation) that combines a review of previous research undertaken in your chosen topic, with your own data collection and analysis. The research dissertation provides a unique opportunity for you to demonstrate the subject knowledge you have acquired, as well as your analytical abilities and problem-solving skills that are highly regarded by potential employers. During this phase, your research will be supervised by an experienced academic with expertise in your chosen topic area.

Programme Assessment

Classes are challenging but informal and friendly, and you are encouraged to participate in discussion and debate. Our aim is to enhance your risk management skills by analysing complex problems, exploring the uncertainties involved, evaluating possible solutions and planning risk management implementation.

All assessment is via coursework, the majority of which will be in the form of written assignments. You will also complete a self-directed research dissertation supported by supervisors.

Our aim is to produce the next generation of leaders in earthquake engineering and natural disaster risk management who want to make an impact on the design of the built environment, the mitigation of seismic loss and the protection of human life. This specialist MSc combines the training of earthquake, structural and geotechnical engineering with design, assessment and management of infrastructure.

This discipline demands world-class facilities and at Bristol you will benefit from studying in the UK’s flagship centre for earthquake engineering. Here, you will have access to the state-of-the-art BLADE/EQUALS laboratory, including one of the most advanced earthquake shaking tables in Europe.

Throughout the programme you will work together with expert staff and international partners, exposing you to real-world challenges engineers face. Industry links are integral to the programme and our graduates are highly sought after by major UK and international employers.

One of the many highlights of the year is a field trip to an earthquake affected area in south-east Europe. You will have the opportunity to visit structures designed with innovative methods to resist earthquake forces or inspect the damage of a recent aftermath by using modern tools for non-destructive material testing and remote imaging.

Programme structure

Subject areas are aligned with two main strands relevant to structural/geotechnical earthquake engineering and disaster risk reduction. A strong set of core units (structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, reliability for engineers, soil-structure interaction and engineering seismology) is followed by 10-credit specialist units, depending on the strand chosen.

Students following the structural/geotechnical earthquake engineering strand will take units relevant to the analysis and design to Eurocode 8, laboratory testing of structures and soils, foundation engineering and soil dynamics. Students who choose to pursue the disaster risk management strand will focus on engineering for international development, disaster risk reduction, hazards and infrastructure and environmental modelling.

Cross references are carefully designed among the units of the two strands to make sure that all graduates obtain a uniform level of background knowledge and appropriate specialisation.

You are also required, as part of your course, to attend a field trip to an earthquake affected region, typically in a Mediterranean country. You may visit recently damaged areas and/or major engineering projects designed to resist earthquake forces. A series of seminars will also give you the opportunity to learn, as part of a distinct unit, the most recent advances in earthquake engineering innovation from distinguished invited experts.

Having successfully completed these units, you will prepare a 60-credit MSc thesis during the summer term, to be submitted at the end of the academic year.
