The aim of the MRes in Urban Sustainability and Resilience is to equip students from a variety of backgrounds with the research skills, knowledge and understanding required to tackle current and future challenges faced by cities globally, including increasing the resilience of our urban systems, and the infrastructure that supports them, to shocks arising from natural, economic and technological disasters.

About this degree

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (30 credits), two elective modules (30 credits) and a research project (120 credits).

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of up to 20,000 words and produce a presentation to be delivered at a dedicated event in September (120 credits).

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, problem classes, workshops and projects. Assessment is through examinations, project reports, coursework and project presentations.

The MSc Top-up Advanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Practice (Resilience and Positive Development) is a researcher-practitioner degree aimed at those high intensity IAPT practitioners who want to develop a career in research and academia. It provides you with a platform to occupy senior management positions in the NHS and healthcare organisations.

The course enables you to add to your classic CBT training all the knowledge and skills required to treat clients using resilience training and the principles of positive development, as well as undertake research in these areas. You will need to enrol and successfully complete Module 6 of the PGDip Advanced CBT Practice (Resilience and Positive Development). You will then to take modules 7 and 8 to qualify for the MSc Advanced CBT Practice (Resilience and Positive Development).

The course is unique in using positive psychology principles and practice for the development of resilience and flourishing in clients with mental health issues. During the first and second year you'll have an opportunity to take part in a question-and-answer session in person with Dr Christine Padesky, and one to two online group sessions where you'll be able to discuss some client issues common to the whole group. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a master clinician.

The first module of the MSc top-up is module 6 of the PgDip (CBT interventions for the development of resilience and flourishing) and will be delivered one weekend a month. Modules 7 and 8 will take place on a weekday (usually a Monday or Wednesday).

The MSc Organisational Resilience is designed to meet the requirements of industry and the professionals who are either currently employed in it or who seek to develop advanced capability. There are many currently working in the sector who have long-term experience and are seeking validation and evidence of this through the achievement of a postgraduate qualification.

The programme provides an opportunity for advancement to those already employed in resilience roles, for example as security, crisis or business continuity managers or heads of function, who wish to broaden their industry knowledge base and management and analytical skills with a view to enhancing their career prospects. Secondly, the programme is designed to appeal to people with general management roles and experience who are interested in moving into the resilience sector or who have been made responsible for the implementation and management of resilience within their organisation.

Many of the students on this course already work in roles such as risk management, continuity management, or are in the armed forces. The course aims to offer a flexible approach to the subjects studied and those already working in this area will be able to develop further their knowledge skills and experience. The course will ensure you develop a sound working knowledge of the principles and practice of emergency planning and the underpinning policy. You will develop valuable skills in communication and strategic leadership. You will also develop a wide range of inter-personal skills for effective use in multi-agency teams. There will be opportunities to take part in exercises and training in simulated emergency settings with a wide range of professional and other Key Stakeholders and organisations involved in emergency planning.

You will study six 20 credit modules and conduct a 60 credit Master’s level piece of independent research. You may also use the accreditation of prior experience and learning process to credit appropriate experience or past level 7 credits for learning, towards the course. You will be able to study a range of subjects for the 60 credits at PG Certificate (Cert) level and 60 credits at PG Diploma (Dip) level. The 60 credit independent study module can be selected from three options, either an evidence based practice module containing two major assessments, usually of relevance to your current workplace (under the supervision of an experienced member of staff), a Consultancy Project which will be negotiated by an employer or third party organisation where you may agree delivery parameters of a consultancy project , carry out the required work and academically evaluate the process and outcomes or the research dissertation. Emergencies and disasters have increased globally over the past 20 years and this trend is set to remain high. Organisations across the UK including the National Health Service (NHS), the emergency services, local government, HM Armed Forces and the private sector need to develop the ability to respond to `a variety of major incidents and to manage recovery locally, regionally or nationally and internationally within the context of the UK Civil Contingencies Act (2004)and other international legislation. Each major organisation will have in place a Major Incident Plan that is built upon the principles of risk assessment and emergency planning skills. Most organisations have set up emergency planning departments and career opportunities exist in working in the field of emergency planning at local, regional and national and International levels. This course will give you the advanced underpinning theories, principles and concepts of emergency planning resilience and response and enable you to engage with strategic and national and International guidelines in practice.

Students undertaking this course may already be working in the field of emergency planning or on the front line in accident and emergency services, etc. It is envisaged that students will develop strategic leadership skills and develop further their multi-agency working. Placements

You'll need to have secured a client base where you'll see depressed and anxious patients and some patients with complex presentations during the course. This can be within the NHS or within private practice. You'll need approximately 2 completed cases per module. In total you'll need 200 clinical hours of face to face contact with clients. You'll also need to organise a BABCP accredited field supervisor for one individual supervision session, equivalent to one hour, per month. As well as this throughout the course some clinical supervision will be provided by BABCP accredited supervisors at the University.

Employability

At the end of the PgDip you will be eligible to apply independently for BABCP accreditation as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist. You'll be able to practice in the NHS and in private practice.

Academic study can underpin much needed professionalisation and application of evidence and research-based theory to this area. Teaching and learning

This course combines teaching and research in security and system reliability with human factors, verification and distributed systems. It gives you an integrated view of the technologies relevant to developing trustworthy systems.

You will develop the skills to design and assess computing systems to be secure and safe in the face of failure or attack. You will have the opportunity to assess a real system, such as a cybercrime incident room.

Computer security and resilience are dynamic areas of computing science. Security is not just about cryptography - it's about understanding the flow of information. Resilience is the capacity of a system to recover from damage, whether caused by errors made during software design, by accidental misuse, by human error or by malicious attack. Analysing and designing secure and reliable systems involves taking all these factors into account.

Resilience is key for organisations in today’s turbulent times and risk managers are fundamental to achieving this.

This course will help you to acquire the knowledge, skills and tools to become a proficient and capable risk manager. The increase in British and International Standards in Risk and Crisis Management, Organisational Resilience and Continuity highlight the importance of this area which has grown into more than just a specialist subject in the education of managers, risk specialists and others.

Recognition of Prior Learning (APL) (RPL)

If you have undertaken courses in risk and crisis elsewhere, either professional or academic, you may be eligible for RPL. This is particularly relevant for applicants from the armed forces and emergency services.

Also, if you have attended appropriate professional development short courses at the Cabinet Office Emergency Planning College (EPC) you may be eligible for RPL on the programme. To check eligibility, please refer to http://www.port.ac.uk/epc. RPL requires evidence of good practice in the topics of study and of applying this appropriately at your workplace. If you wish to take advantage of this offer, a personal tutor will aid you in submission of your evidence after enrolment on the course.

Module Details

Modules are delivered in two blocks of three days which run from Tuesdays to Thursdays allowing Monday and Friday to be available for further research or for time in the office. The flexibility this provides is one of the benefits of this course.

Here are the units you will study:

Strategic Risk and Risk Behaviour: This explores the theoretical frameworks and interdisciplinary nature of risk and effective risk management in organisations. The importance of human factors and people skills in risk perception and management are also considered, examining the roles of the individuals, teams and leaders in the context of developing and implementing risk management policies and strategies.

Organisational and Environmental Risk: This unit will investigate theories of environmental and organisational risk management and the approaches that an organisation may employ to achieve these successfully. The role of environmental and organisational risk management within the context of legislation will also be explored.

Crisis Management and Governance: This unit studies the development of effective, transparent continuity and crisis planning. The challenges facing organisations in ensuring robust governance, continuity and crisis management plans, highlighting the differences between this and generic risk management will be explored. Training and exercise preparedness will also be reviewed, enabling students to design appropriate scenarios for their organisations.

Project and Research Methods: This focuses on project risk management processes, systems and technology. Central to the module is a consideration of the key challenges in the application of project risk identification and response frameworks. This will be linked to the research dissertation as a project to be managed, preparing students for the research element of the programme.

Dissertation: This unit comprises the final part of the course. You will undertake a 15,000-word management research project (dissertation) that combines a review of previous research undertaken in your chosen topic, with your own data collection and analysis. The research dissertation provides a unique opportunity for you to demonstrate the subject knowledge you have acquired, as well as your analytical abilities and problem-solving skills that are highly regarded by potential employers. During this phase, your research will be supervised by an experienced academic with expertise in your chosen topic area.

Programme Assessment

Classes are challenging but informal and friendly, and you are encouraged to participate in discussion and debate. Our aim is to enhance your risk management skills by analysing complex problems, exploring the uncertainties involved, evaluating possible solutions and planning risk management implementation.

All assessment is via coursework, the majority of which will be in the form of written assignments. You will also complete a self-directed research dissertation supported by supervisors.

Our aim is to produce the next generation of leaders in earthquake engineering and natural disaster risk management who want to make an impact on the design of the built environment, the mitigation of seismic loss and the protection of human life. This specialist MSc combines the training of earthquake, structural and geotechnical engineering with design, assessment and management of infrastructure.

This discipline demands world-class facilities and at Bristol you will benefit from studying in the UK’s flagship centre for earthquake engineering. Here, you will have access to the state-of-the-art BLADE/EQUALS laboratory, including one of the most advanced earthquake shaking tables in Europe.

Throughout the programme you will work together with expert staff and international partners, exposing you to real-world challenges engineers face. Industry links are integral to the programme and our graduates are highly sought after by major UK and international employers.

One of the many highlights of the year is a field trip to an earthquake affected area in south-east Europe. You will have the opportunity to visit structures designed with innovative methods to resist earthquake forces or inspect the damage of a recent aftermath by using modern tools for non-destructive material testing and remote imaging.

Programme structure

Subject areas are aligned with two main strands relevant to structural/geotechnical earthquake engineering and disaster risk reduction. A strong set of core units (structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, reliability for engineers, soil-structure interaction and engineering seismology) is followed by 10-credit specialist units, depending on the strand chosen.

Students following the structural/geotechnical earthquake engineering strand will take units relevant to the analysis and design to Eurocode 8, laboratory testing of structures and soils, foundation engineering and soil dynamics. Students who choose to pursue the disaster risk management strand will focus on engineering for international development, disaster risk reduction, hazards and infrastructure and environmental modelling.

Cross references are carefully designed among the units of the two strands to make sure that all graduates obtain a uniform level of background knowledge and appropriate specialisation.

You are also required, as part of your course, to attend a field trip to an earthquake affected region, typically in a Mediterranean country. You may visit recently damaged areas and/or major engineering projects designed to resist earthquake forces. A series of seminars will also give you the opportunity to learn, as part of a distinct unit, the most recent advances in earthquake engineering innovation from distinguished invited experts.

Having successfully completed these units, you will prepare a 60-credit MSc thesis during the summer term, to be submitted at the end of the academic year.

Building people’s resilience to disasters and conflict

One of the key development challenges of our time is the increasing number of people placed at risk of crises and disasters; people's vulnerability increases due to shocks and trends as a result of natural and man-made hazards.

The number, complexity and impact of disasters are increasing which heightens the need for better disaster management. Disaster Risk Management (DRM) has become one of the cornerstones of international development: there is urgency to reduce disaster losses and a need to minimize the impact of disasters on sustainable development. 

Disasters are, in essence, the result of poorly managed risk and human failure to introduce appropriate risk reduction measures. Effective crises and disaster responses therefore demand a shift away from reactive Emergency Relief to pro-active Disaster Risk Reduction. DRM therefore combines the concept of response and recovery (in the post-disaster phase) with the concept of prevention, mitigation and preparedness (the pre-disaster phase). 

Graduates of DRM will be better able to respond to natural and man-made disasters in increasingly complex and dynamic environments. In the context of increasing climate variability and climate change (slow-onset disasters), this specialization pays attention to linking Disaster Risk Reduction with Climate Change Adaptation. The DRM specialisation also touches on conflict, making the course also relevant for those working in tense and conflict affected regions. 

Central to the DRM specialisation is the focus on reducing the negative impacts of disasters and conflict on peoples’ lives and livelihoods and to build people’s resilience to disasters, crises and conflict.

At graduation, you will have developed the ability to:

  • To understand the changing roles, responsibilities and modes of operations of key DRM actors;
