Study primary care and international health at Queen Mary

The vision of the MSc International Primary Health Care is to build a vibrant inter-professional and interdisciplinary learning community of primary care practitioners who will work together under the guidance of expert tutors to explore how the principles and practice of effective primary health care may be achieved in different countries, health care systems, and local settings. There is no clinical component to this MSc, though students will be encouraged to apply any particular clinical interest.

This international primary care masters is part of a wider programme of study in global and international health. Underpinned by a commitment to the principles of social justice and fairness, these programmes will provide students with an understanding of the significance of the current global challenges for health care and public health, and will offer a multidisciplinary focus on global public health and primary care in a time of increasing health inequalities.

Queen Mary is committed to teaching and researching global health, and has assembled for this initiative an experienced team from across the university, led by professors who have previously established and run successful and highly prestigious programmes both online and on campus. Prof Allyson Pollock is one of the UK's leading public intellectuals in medicine, and is a world authority on global health and public health policy. Prof Trish Greenhalgh is one of the international stars of general practice, a leading educationalist in international primary health and enormously influential in primary health research. The programmes are based in the Centre for Primary Care and Public Health, which is responsible for leading global health teaching in the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, the leading UK medical school for global health in the undergraduate medical curriculum.

Who is this programme for?

Students on the international primary health care programme will be established primary care practitioners who will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge from their varied practice settings around the world. Dealing with primary health care, the programme is concerned with core underlying principles, and so is of relevance to those working or planning to work locally in London, in the UK, or anywhere in the world where these principles apply, and at the local, national, or international level.

Possible career routes

Students who studied the previous MSc programme run by our team have gone on to become researchers, trainers, teachers and change agents in a wide range of primary care settings throughout the world.

Programme outline

In the first semester modules develop the key concepts and research methods and analysis. These present students with relevant methodological issues and challenges while providing interdisciplinary foundations. In the second semester students gain a more detailed understanding of areas of special relevance to international primary health care through the specialist module, Primary Health Care: Theory and Practice, and through elective modules that allow them to focus on the aspects of primary health of most interest to them.

Programme Content

The programme aims to facilitate graduates who have broadened their knowledge and skill sets beyond clinical medicine. Various cross-cutting themes and aims help develop a culture of self-critical, self-motivated lifelong learning, fostering leadership skills within the setting of the ever-changing political and economic structures of the NHS. Students develop an understanding of critically appraising research and the value this brings to practice by carrying out their own small scale research projects within the ethical boundaries of primary health care.

The programme offers a flexible route to a Masters award, and although the programme uses existing research modules students consider primary health care as the focus for their studies.

Students take both a qualitative and quantitative research methods module, taking more credits in one of these depending on their proposed Independent Study methodology (for example, a student intending to undertake a quantitative methodology for their Independent Study would choose a 40 credit quantitative methods module). Students are supplied with guidance as to which methodology they should choose. Students have free choice over whether they undertake taught or distance learning modules.

The Bradford MPH is designed for those looking to move into public health, policy or community development at a senior level, and is suitable for candidates from diverse undergraduate study backgrounds and / or professional experience. The programme retrains students into future healthcare leaders who understand health policy, community change, human behaviour change, or health service design.

The Bradford MPH addresses the central practice dilemma for public health today – how to address the challenges of an ageing society suffering from increasing and multiple chronic diseases in a context of standstill or diminishing resources.

The programme develops strategic leaders with a comprehensive, analytical and critical understanding of the wider determinants of population health and well-being. The programme places emphasis on leadership and strategic thinking, developed through comprehensive qualitative and quantitative research, analysis and evaluation.

Graduates will be equipped to address contemporary Public Health challenges such as changing health demographics, health inequalities, problems of access, quality, and continuity of care, and ageing and end of life care. It will help healthcare professionals to find creative policy solutions and implement tailored practice-interventions. Graduates will be change agents identifying ways to address health problems but also to innovate by building on community and health service assets to enhance the quality of life for millions of people in a safe, ethical and cost effective way.

The programme is be tailored to the demographic and epidemiological challenges of contemporary urban societies - the diseases of affluence and ageing, and the marginalized and vulnerable populations produced by these kinds of settings. The focus on infectious disease management and international health, though necessarily addressed in our curriculum, will not receive concentrated focus as it does in so many other MPH programmes in the UK.

MPH students will have access to the new DHEZ Academic Building. This centre, opening in 2017, provides patient services in pathology, optometry, physiotherapy, and community pharmacy. It also houses a health promotion unit specialising in ageing and end of life care issues, and an evaluation and trials unit designed to evaluate new health technologies designed by businesses.
There are also innovative partnerships with primary health/GP providers as well as new mental health promotion programmes (e.g. Recovery Colleges) that students will access either in demonstration events or within actual teaching modules that encourage students to meet with the actual academic researchers and innovators behind these programmes.

The academic team behind the programme include University of Bradford 50th Anniversary Chair Professor Allan Kellehear, and a transdisciplinary development team including the School of Pharmacy and School of Engineering at the University of Bradford.
The programme is offered on a full and part-time to accommodate the needs of professionals working in industry. The programme can be studied over 12 months full time, or two years part time (up to five years by credit accumulation).

Professional Accreditation

The programme has been mapped onto the Faculty of Public Health syllabus for the Part A examinations of the Faculty of Public Health and up to Level 7 of the Public Health Skills and Career Framework (Public Health Resource, 2008.) Specialism is possible through the choice of elective modules and dissertation topic.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. This course has run since 2011, previously being integrated with the MPhil TMAT courses and taken part-time over two years. It is being re-launched in 2015 as a full-time one year course, based in the Cambridge Institute of Public Health’s Department of Public Health and Primary Care. More than half of the curriculum is shared with the MPhils in Public Health and Epidemiology. The aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical knowledge and skills as well as practical research experience to launch an academic clinical career in primary care.

The course draws on local strengths in working with large databases, primary care-based clinical trials and a wide range of other appropriate methods of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analyses. Course detail

The aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical knowledge and skills as well as practical research experience to launch an academic clinical career in primary care. Specifically, the course aims to:

1. Contribute to the commitment of the Cambridge University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust (CUHNHSFT), Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust/ Clinical Commissioning Group and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to continuing professional development of NHS staff in an integrated academic and clinical environment;
2. Develop a cadre of primary care clinical research leaders who will pursue clinical Academic careers within academia, the NHS and industry;
3. Contribute to the commitment of the Health Education East of England to continuing professional development of GP Specialty Trainees in an integrated academic and clinical environment;
4. Expand critical and current knowledge of research methodologies through an academically vigorous education programme offered in a world-leading primary care clinical research environment;
5. Equip clinical researchers with knowledge about the complex issues associated with conducting sound translational research in general practice and community settings.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete this programme successfully will have gained an understanding of the primary care research context, including the distinctive nature and contribution of primary care research, and the contribution of key underpinning methods. Specifically, graduates will possess a grounding in primary care-relevant epidemiological, psychological, sociological and health services research methods, statistical methods and data analyses including surveys, trials and evidence synthesis. Upon successful completion each student will be able to apply contemporary research tools to clinically relevant areas of investigation in primary care.

Successful completion of the MPhil will also equip students with the skills and knowledge defined by the Academy of Medical Sciences’ Supplementary Guidelines for the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) for Specialty Registrars undertaking joint clinical and academic training programmes (September 2011).

Michaelmas Term

This term focuses on epidemiological and biostatistical principles and procedures. Teaching sessions during this term will be shared with students from the MPhils in Epidemiology and Public Health course. The teaching in this term also includes training in basic data handling and analysis using the statistical package Stata.

The three modules are:

- Epidemiology
- Biostatistics
- Data handling and appraisal

During this term you will also complete an essay on the epidemiology of a chosen condition in a primary care population. This essay is a formal part of the MPhil examination and will contribute to your final mark. You should also begin to research an appropriate topic for your MPhil thesis. You should discuss this proposal with you Course Supervisor to assess the suitability of the topic and the availability of relevant data.

There will also be an assessment based on the epidemiological component of the first term. This assessment is informal and does not count towards your degree. The assessment provides your Course Supervisor and Course Directors with a guide to your progress. A guideline answer sheet will be provided at the end of the assessment.

Lent Term

This term includes modular-based lectures and seminars in more advanced aspects of epidemiological research and public health which are shared with students from the MPhils in Epidemiology and Public Health, and specific modules on Primary Care Research not shared with other MPhil students.

During this term you will also complete a second essay which should take the form of a protocol for your thesis research. This essay is a formal part of the MPhil examination and will contribute to your final mark. Before starting your protocol, the title of your thesis should be agreed with you Course and Thesis Supervisor. Both you Course and Thesis Supervisor should sign the thesis title form confirming the title. All students must have a designated Thesis Supervisor (in some cases this individual may also be the Course Supervisor).

Easter Term

This term includes a small number of modular-based lectures and seminars again shared with students from the MPhils in Epidemiology and Publich Health.

A thesis not exceeding 20,000 words in length, including footnotes, but excluding tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

Two essays, each not exceeding 3,000 words in length, on subjects approved by the Degree Committee

Two written papers, each of which may cover all the areas of study prescribed in the syllabus.

The course components are completed by the end of July. However, to complete the course, students will be required to attend a viva in person on a date (to be announced) in late August or early September.

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. Furthermore, there is a bridging spine between both pillars and which houses the Professional Doctorate in Health, Research in Health Practice and the administrative, finance, learning & teaching development, marketing and support activities of the Department.

- Population health

Historically, health policy has focused almost exclusively on sickness services provided by agencies such as the National Health Service. Although this focus on healthcare remains hugely important, it is increasingly complemented by aspirations to improve the health of the population by tackling the social determinants of health such as poverty and pollution and by encouraging people to adopt health promoting behaviours such as healthy diets and increased physical activity and to stop health damaging ones such as smoking. There is also growing national and international concern that improvements in health should be fairly distributed by reducing health inequalities. The Department for Health organises its work related to population health improvement in three main ways. Much the largest element in the population health portfolio is related to sport, health and exercise science, but the School attaches growing importance to tobacco control and health inequalities.

- Healthcare

The Department’s expertise in Healthcare focuses on innovation in the design, delivery, organization, and evaluation of healthcare interventions. We have a particular emphasis on disabling and distressing, long term or life-limiting conditions, such as chronic pain, stroke, dementia, rheumatic disease, and severe mental health problems. We are pleased to announce that after an intensive two year review of the MPH core subject curriculum that we have made some exciting new changes to the MPH core subjects. Within the review we consulted with employers and staff, reviewed graduate student feedback and benchmarked against MPH offerings around the world. As a result of the review we have developed an novel new core subject, ‘Planning and Priortising in Public Health’, that is focused on practical public health workplace skills. We have also made minor changes to other core subjects with the aim of having an increased focus on the drivers of public health problems, the skills required by all public health practitioners, and planning and managing public health projects and programs. These curriculum and structural changes will enable the ability of the School to continue to produce high quality graduates equipped with relevant knowledge and skills for a breadth of careers within the public health workforce.

Students commencing the Master of Public Health in 2017 and beyond will have the opportunity to complete ‘Planning and Prioritising in Public Health’. Existing students will also have the opportunity to take this subject as an elective from 2017 onwards. These changes will increase the breadth of skills and knowledge gained by students within their MPH experience.

The Master of Public Health has three components:

  1. The core component includes up to six subjects that provide students with a rigorous, multidisciplinary foundation in public health theory and practice, that is essential to all aspects of public health practice;
  2. The specialist component offers students the opportunity to focus on one or more key fields in public health and gain the skills and knowledge required for practice in the area. Specialisations are offered in the fields of Ageing, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Gender and Women’s Health, Global Health, Health Program Evaluation, Health Economics and Economic Evaluation, Health Social Sciences, Indigenous Health, Primary Care, Sexual Health; and
  3. The capstone experience offers students the opportunity to consolidate their specialist training and apply the knowledge gained in the course to real world scenarios. Students may apply to undertake a Research Project with an expert in their field; a Professional Practice placement with a recognised agency, institution or community organisation concerned with health; or capstone selective subjects.

The Public Health MSc, PG Dip, PG Cert provides a comprehensive and integrated education in public health through a multidisciplinary study approach which is both academic and vocational. It draws upon the wealth of research, education and clinical expertise in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and is delivered by the Department of Primary Care & Public Health Sciences which has forged strong international links, particularly with US and European research and teaching partners.

The course aims to enable you to develop a critical understanding of public health providing the foundations for pursuing a career in public health, or for enhancing existing practice and facilitating career advancement, particularly through contributing to the emerging evidence base for public health interventions.

Students study a suite of modules which provide a comprehensive understanding of public health. Course description:
These awards are for nurses and other health care staff working predominantly in primary care settings. This could include delivering care within patient’s homes, general practice, walk-in centres, polyclinics, urgent care centres, intermediate care centres etc. The Primary Care Scheme also offers a Nursing and Midwifery Council accredited Specialist Practice Qualification for District Nursing and V100 Prescribing from the Community Practitioner Formulary, where the principles of the Primary Care Scheme apply but students follow a prescribed pathway.

Career opportunities;
The National Health Service is promoting a secondary to primary care shift with more services being provided within a broader range of primary care settings. Working within primary care requires a different set of skills and knowledge to those learned in secondary care. The Primary Care Scheme has been designed to facilitate participants to design programmes of study that are pertinent to their needs and those of the service, recognising that this is a rapidly changing service environment. The Master of Public Health (MPH) course is an intensive study programme that aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge informing the key domains of public health.

You will:

  • study the breadth of public health or pursue a specialist pathway that better meets your specific career advancement needs. 

All students are enrolled onto the Master of Public Health which addresses the key domains of public health practice. The course is made up of optional and required modules.

The required modules are:

  • Basic Epidemiology & Statistics for Public Health,
  • Prevention and Control of Communicable Disease 
  • and a Dissertation Project.

Once accepted onto the course, you may wish to pursue a specialist pathway by selecting the additional required/compulsory modules.

If you are interested in the :

You will also explore a range of optional modules to bring your total credit value up to 180, allowing you to create a unique study plan that reflects your interests.

If you are studying full-time, you will complete the course in one year, from September to September. If you are studying part-time, your programme will take two years to complete.

In addition to the required modules (which total 90 credits), part-time students should plan to take 30-45 optional module credits in their first year and 45-60 optional module credits in their second year.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

We use lectures, seminars and group tutorials to deliver most of the modules on the programme. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of unseen written examinations, coursework and presentations. The research project and dissertation will be assessed on an extended piece of writing. 

Examinations are mainly held during Examination Period 1 (January) and Examination Period 2 (May / early June). The ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ examination is, however, normally held during Examination Period 3 (August).

Resit and replacement examinations are normally scheduled during Examination Period 3 (August). Resit and replacement examinations for the 'Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection' module are normally held during the following Examination Period (January).

You’ll submit your first piece of summative coursework towards the end of Term 1, and coursework submissions continue into April. The coursework for the ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ module is submitted in August.

The dissertation is submitted in early September (part-time students submit their dissertation at the end of their second year). 

The formal teaching, self-directed study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. They are however, subject to change.

About this degree

Dissertation/research project

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 7,500 words. An oral presentation and a lay summary of 500 words are also required. The dissertation can include primary research, secondary data analysis, a literature/historical review or a project proposal in a field related to population health.

Common mental health problems, including anxiety and depression, account for one-third of all primary care consultations in the UK. The impact of these on individuals, families, communities and healthcare resources is recognised at a global level.

Our part-time MSc in Primary Mental Health Care (a pathway of the Advanced Practice Interventions for Mental Health (APIMH) programme) aims to equip primary care professionals with the knowledge and skills to improve services for these individuals.

A key strategy to address current and future challenges of this immense area of need is to equip those working in primary care in both existing and new roles with relevant knowledge and skills to enhance access to and the effectiveness of services and care delivery through evidence-based, innovative approaches.

Our course is directly relevant to clinical practice and uses a bio-psychosocial framework so you can develop knowledge and skills in evidence-based interventions, including cognitive-behavioural approaches, collaborative case management and community engagement.

You will learn how to offer high-quality, evidence-based interventions and contribute to service developments that promote socially inclusive mental health care for individuals, families and communities.

The first year of the pathway (PGCert) meets the national competencies for IAPT Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) and is a mandatory requirement, funded through an NHS contract, for newly appointed PWPs.

Aims

The course aims to enhance access to, and the effectiveness of, mental health and social care services that are evidence-based, multidisciplinary and focused on the needs of patients/service users and their carers.

The course will equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to enhance their own practice (PGCert) and the practice of others, as well as contribute to innovations and developments in mental health care and service delivery (PGDip/MSc).

Teaching and learning

You will participate in a range of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, small group work, student-led seminars, problem-based learning scenarios, online learning and clinical simulations.

There is a strong emphasis on skills development through the use of role play, experiential exercises and analysis and elements of supervised practice and practice mentorship to achieve practical skills outcomes for some course units.

In addition, you will undertake independent study to further develop and consolidate your learning. All pathways involve sessions by users and/or carers who are seen as essential contributors to student learning as experts by experience.

The course involves attendance at the University for part of the week and the rest is spent in clinical practice. In Year 1, you are required to identify a suitable practice supervisor/mentor to oversee and assess the clinical and/or practice work required for the programme and pathway.

Students working within an IAPT service are expected to receive supervision from supervisors who have completed IAPT Supervisor Training. This is an accredited five-day training programme currently provided by the University and is an essential requirement for Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) seeking accreditation with the BABCP on qualification.

Coursework and assessment

We use a variety of assessments within each course unit and across the course as a whole. All assessments require you to integrate knowledge and understanding and apply this to your own area of practice relevant to the outcomes of each unit and the focus of each pathway.

Assessment methods include essays, case studies, seminar presentations, literature reviews, recorded clinical simulations and/or recordings of actual client interactions. For some course units, you are also required to submit practice supervision/or practice mentorship records.

Course unit details

The course consists of pathway-specific and core/compulsory course units. Pathway-specific units focus on the following themes:

Year 1

  • Evidence based interventions in Primary Mental Health Care
  • Engagement and Assessment of Patients with Common Mental Health Problems

Year 2

Core course units are shared with students studying other pathways and programmes but retain a pathway-specific focus through group work and assessments. Core course units focus on the following themes:

  • Research and Evidence Base for Practice and Different Approaches and Methods Used in Social Research
  • Long Term Conditions (LTCs) in Primary Mental Health
  • Developing Practice and Managing Change

On completion of the taught units (PGDip), successful students who meet progression requirements are able to continue onto their research dissertation for the MSc. The dissertation enables you, with the support of an individual supervisor, to undertake an extended written piece of work that focuses on a specific aspect of primary mental health care practice in the form of an extended literature-based review.

Year 3

The Year 3 dissertation consists of a 12,000 to 15,000-word dissertation that undertakes an extended literature-based review/proposal for practice development.

This course has been designed in collaboration with practice colleagues and is delivered by nationally renowned and published experts in the field. The pathway has an excellent track record of working with service user and carer organisations as an integral part of the teaching team.

This course is for:

  • existing practitioners across the north-west who are employed in the NHS, as well as other statutory/voluntary services contributing to the work of the NHS;
  • trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (as part of the 'Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies' (IAPT) initiative) who are employed in the NHS in Greater Manchester, as well as other statutory/voluntary services that have been commissioned to provide an IAPT Primary Mental Health Care Service.

The first year of the pathway (PGCert) is automatically undertaken as part of these roles.

PWPs who have already completed the PGCert in Primary Mental Health Care since 2004, and have their employers' support, may enter the pathway at Year 2.

This course in detail

The course will be taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BA in Mental Health Nursing and our new four-year BSc Adult and Mental Health Nursing and BSc Children's and Mental Health Nursing.

We are currently redeveloping and revalidating all of our Pre-Registration Nursing programmes and we expect to run new MSc and BSc Mental Health Nursing courses from September 2016.

Working at master's level, you will focus on developing a knowledge base in mental health nursing that is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of mental health nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field.

You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in your chosen field and more broadly will be enquiry focused, reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware.

You will complete a master’s level research project involving primary data collection; a service improvement project, a critical review of the literature, or other scholarly output and will be supported to publish your work.

Teaching and learning

In health and social care no professional group works in isolation. Oxford Brookes teaches a wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with these other health care students. This is a key component of the course as it is essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.
