Our MRes Cardiovascular Health and Disease course is a research-focused master's course focusing on cardiovascular research within a unique multidisciplinary training environment.

Master of Research (MRes) degree provides preparatory training for academic research, ideal if you want to eventually progress on to a PhD and develop a research career, or if you wish to gain research skills within specialist areas before committing to a PhD. This course is also highly suited to medical students who want to intercalate.

Through this course, you will develop broad biomedical research skills, but with an emphasis on application to cardiovascular science.

It is now widely recognised by employers and research councils that unravelling the basis of cardiovascular disease and developing new therapies is a high-priority area for investment, especially since the economic burden of cardiovascular disease is increasing.

However, it is becoming increasingly clearer that a gap has opened up between the skills possessed by new graduates and the skills normally expected on entry to a research degree or an industrial research career. This MRes has been specifically designed to fill this gap for those who wish to pursue a research career in cardiovascular sciences.

Our course is suitable if you come from a medical or science background and have little or no previous research experience.

Aims

Our course is designed to provide you with:

  • specialist knowledge of the principles of the cardiovascular system in health and disease, with an emphasis on emerging technologies (taught lectures);
  • laboratory skills, research methodology and data analysis (two research projects);
  • critical analysis of scientific and medical literature (literature review);
  • intellectual skills for understanding and interpreting research problems (tutorials);
  • communication of scientific data and concepts (oral presentations and written reports).

You will learn through a range of teaching methods, including seminars, workshops and tutorials, as well as through research projects (25 weeks).

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is through a combination of written reports (in journal format), literature review, problem-based learning (PBL) tutorials and oral presentations.

This range of training methods aims to promote a stimulating and dynamic learning environment. The different course units will enable the development of key transferable skills in the critical analysis of research methodologies, data interrogation, communication and time management.

Clinical Masterclass course unit:

The Clinical Masterclass course unit is a 15 credit unit specifically designed for intercalated medical students. The unit consists of a series of seminars, workshops and e-learning.

This unit contributes to personal and professional development in the experience, knowledge and skills training required for effective clinical practice and success, with a strong emphasis on clinical academic research.

  • advanced Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • research governance and the regulatory framework for research
  • the Human Tissue Act
  • practical clinical ethics
  • patient and public involvement in research
  • diversity/equal opportunities in research/cultural competence

Studying the acquisition, understanding and production of language.

A mature language user has a vocabulary of about thirty to forty thousand words. Speech is produced at a speed of three to five words per second. How is it possible that, in such an amazingly short period of time, you can select the correct words, put them in the correct order and grammatical form, and pronounce them intelligibly? The acquisition and comprehension of language are based on extremely complex cognitive processes which are not yet entirely understood. It’s these processes, and their biological underpinnings, that form psycholinguistics’ field of study and are the basis of this specialisation.

A large majority of our graduates gain a PhD position, while other graduates find jobs in the commercial sector or at research institutes. Graduates of this specialisation can find a position with one of the psycholinguistic research institutes, a government institution or for example, in the care sector (rehabilitation centres) or in education (language disorders).

Admission requirements for international students

1. A completed Bachelor's degree in Linguistics or related area

In order to get admission to this Master's you’ll need a completed Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics. Students with a Bachelor’s degree in specific language, like German, Dutch and such, or with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Information Sciences can also apply, provided they took at least 60 ECTS worth of courses in the field of linguistics.

2. Proficiency in English

In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English* without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:

  • A TOEFL score of >600 (paper based) or >100 (internet based)
  • An IELTS score of >7.0
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher
  • A Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Culture from a research university.

Students can specialise in either communications electronics (embedded systems, networking, etc.) or cognitive electronics (sensors, sensor networks, medical diagnostics, measurement systems). The programme is supported by the ELIKO Competence Centre and the CEBE Centre of Excellence.

Course outline

The Computer and Systems Engineering Master's programme focuses on the education of designing and using modern complex computer systems. Nowadays computer systems are used more or less everywhere, they are extremely diverse and most of them are "invisible" to users. Such systems include not only traditional PC-s and sophisticated supercomputers, but also computer systems "embedded" into cars and mobile phones, for instance. Most of these computers are interconnected via various wired and wireless networks and do not work in isolation. These embedded systems can be either stand-alone items or an integral part of a larger system and represent the combination of software and hardware designed to perform specific functions.

When studying the Computer and Engineering Systems programme, students are exposed to systems design and modelling, computer architectures and programming, to name few of the topics. Exposure to those topics will position students well for jobs at small, medium and large companies. Their jobs will involve defining, designing and using embedded computer system in areas such as automotive electronics, consumer devices, telecommunications, etc.

The Computer and Systems Engineering programme is supervised by two departments of TUT - Department of Computer Engineering (DCE) and Department of Computer Control (DCC). Students can choose between two of the following specialisations:

  • Computer Systems Design (supervised by DCE) focuses on the modelling, analysing, designing and testing of complex systems consisting of both hardware and software components;
  • Automation and Systems Engineering (supervised by DCC) focuses on the modelling, analysing and designing of automation and computer control systems.

Faculty

Faculty of Information Technology (founded in 1965) trains specialists in the main fields of information and communications technology (ICT) at bachelor, master and doctoral level. High-quality knowledge based teaching and training is based on international research and development activities, and tight cooperation with ICT industry.

There are more than 2100 students annually learning in the faculty, which employs 150 faculty members, lecturers, researchers and engineers.

Health Care Technology (HCT) is a unique Master’s programme in Europe and Estonia is the first country to start teaching Health Care Technology in such an all-inclusive form. HCT focuses on combination of academic and practical skills and the lecturers are mostly from the industry, bringing the latest knowledge and experience to the students.

HCT Master’s program has two specialities: 1) Health care technology (HCT) and 2) Occupational Health Science and Ergonomics (OHSE).

HCT speciality is for people who are interested in healthcare management combined with information technology and innovation. Not just creating new eHealth applications, but making sure it is humanly, financially, economically viable.

Occupational Health and Ergonomics (OHSE) speciality is for people who are interested in health and safety management, ergonomics and designing innovative workplaces, promoting work life quality, productivity and employees’ wellbeing.

The idea to create Health Care Technology programme was born because of high demand on the market for Health Care Specialists. After discussions and brainstorming amongst The Institute of Clinical Medicine and industry partners, the Master's programme was created. For the HCT major to be more effective, the students will attend apprenticeship in the following medical or health care companies:

OHSE major students will attend apprenticeship in different manufacturing companies, state organisations and occupational health services.

The aim of Health Care Technology major is to prepare e-Health technology specialists who have acquired the know-how for working in different health care sector organisations and have the knowledge about the client and patient centred approach and manner of behaviour characteristics of the modern health care system.

Tallinn University of Technology is the first university to start teaching Health Care Technology in this all-inclusive form. Theory lectures are combined with practical studies in our medical and health care industry partner organisations, teaching students how to use their freshly learnt skills and how to put them to work.

Health Care Technology programme professors are from Estonia as well as from Europe and North America, covering Estonian and international experience in different levels and angles of health care. The two-year Master’s program in International Relations and European-Asian Studies builds upon bachelor studies and is designed to prepare specialists with the potential to work in various areas of International Relations such as diplomacy and the conduct of foreign relations as well as mass media, policy planning or academic research etc. The program aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to take advantage of an increasing range of professional opportunities of an international dimension. The students can develop their specialisation in the narrower fields of political, legal and economic studies.

The students obtain a solid basic knowledge and skills in planning and doing research in their field. They learn about the basics and latest developments in theories of political science and international relations. Current issues on the scene of international life today are frequently discussed in class with a special focus on the problems concerning security, conflict resolution and terrorism. The students take a special module concerning European-Asian studies, including European/Asian politics, economy and EU law. This educational background offers them the possibility to obtain excellent qualifications for a successful career in the EU and Asian institutions. In addition, academic career is open for those willing to pursue it.

The Department of International Relations at Tallinn University of Technology offers advanced programmes in the field of International Relations at the Bachelor and Master level, which are unique in the region. International Relations as an interdisciplinary field of social science typically consists of international politics, international law and international economy. These fields are in the main focus of our programmes. Concerning teaching the law courses, we are developing cooperation with The Tallinn Law School. In addition, there is an emphasis on courses introducing the history and basics of diplomacy, security studies, political and cultural communication, etc. Our students learn about the foundation, historical development and current trends of the democratic society in the international context. Language-based area studies are becoming an important research focus of the department. This brings us into direct contact with the developing world. Our students have the requirement to learn at least two foreign languages.

In addition, our students have an opportunity to take or choose from seven Asia-related courses framed by the interdisciplinary joint educational module that is offered by our university as well as Tartu and Tallinn University. The aforementioned module is called ‘Asian Societies, Economy and Politics’.

The MA in Technology Governance and Digital Transformation programme is aimed at understanding economic development processes and is taught through the development and evolutionary economics perspectives, which oppose to standard text-book economics, taught at most universities around the world. The programme covers various interlinked areas of study, including public administration and the role of the state in economic development, innovation, industries, and finance.

Technology Governance is an approach and set of policies undertaken by the public and private sector and social actors to develop a knowledge base, social cohesion and competitiveness at the same time. So far, both in academic research and in policy advice, these aspects have tended to be separated. The Technology Governance and Digital Trasformation programme is designed to bridge these gaps. The current crisis has made the Technology Governance approach more necessary than ever. The programme focuses on the following topics: supply chain management, quality management, rapid product development, production planning and management, e-manufacturing and innovation. The key words of the present situation worldwide are production globalization, international and local cooperation and dynamic market. For those reasons, concepts as design, development and management of integrated systems of people, knowledge, equipment and materials are included in the curriculum.
