Why study Secondary Education at Dundee?

You will work alongside tutors with a wealth of experience to share with you and the ability to help you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding you will need to fulfil the role of a secondary school teacher. We offer excellent resources and facilities and a high level of support. You will benefit from placements in two schools, so that you may hone these skills further. We liaise closely with school colleagues, so that they are in a strong position to afford you the experiences you need to make the most of your placements.

Masters level study

The programme offers students the opportunity to have their non-practice placement assignments assessed at Masters Level (SCQF Level 11) and so accrue a total of 60M credits whist they complete their programme of study. These credits can be used towards future Masters study, representing a considerable saving in both time and cost in relation to the usual Masters study arrangements. We are working closely with the MEd team within the School to ensure smooth transitions to the Masters programme for those who pursue this possibility.

The resulting award of PGDE(S) for all successful participants is recognised by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS)General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and widely outside Scotland, thus widening employment opportunities.

How you will be taught

The programme lasts for 36 weeks, from August to June. This 36-week programme is necessarily very intense and is comprised of 18 weeks in University plus 18 weeks (a GTCS requirement) on professional practice placements (9+9 weeks).

Students are associated with two schools (one per semester) in order to capitalise on opportunities to gain deeper understanding and to participate in the wide spectrum of aspects associated with the lives of schools.

We also allow students to develop their areas of strengths/expertise and to support them in areas where they feel less secure. In order to meet the varying needs of students and to address issues as they are identified, we offer "Module Enhancements". Students will be able to choose from a range of learning enhancements which provide enriching experiences for the students, enabling them to personalise their studies. Students will thus be able to capitalise on their strengths and develop areas of interest and need. This approach will utilise workshops, lectures, seminars, tutorials and independent (guided and "free choice") study. Students will also benefit from insights and expertise shared by visiting speakers and from visits to a variety of locations

What you will study

There are four modules: two university-based modules prepare students for their ensuing Professional Practice placements in schools, where they will teach a range of classes. All four modules (2 university-based and 2 school-based) are compulsory. Students may opt in to an Elective and also participate in a range of Enhanced Learning opportunities, whereby their understanding of educational practice may be furthered, whilst undertaking the university-based modules.

Curricular Studies - The programme covers relevant aspects of Curriculum for Excellence(CfE). The programme develops students' understanding of how learners learn and explores strategies for effective teaching and learning.
Professional Studies - The programme will support and develop students’ awareness and understanding of: inter-agency working, working with parents, meeting the needs of all learners, assessment, classroom management and strategies for promoting a positive ethos for learning, including strategies to support positive behaviour management.
Educational Studies - Students are introduced to the History of Scottish Education, Comparative Education (education systems in other countries) and Learning Theory.
Professional Practice (Placement) - 18 weeks working with 11-18 year olds in two schools.

How you will be assessed

Formative assessment and summative assessment are used throughout the programme. There are two university-based assessed modules (one by essay, the other by ePortfolio) and two professional practice placement modules. Professional Practice (Placement) is assessed with reference to the Standard for Initial Teacher Education by university staff and school partners. Although this programme is at graduate entry, there are components (University-based) which are assessed at SCQF Level 10 and Level 11. Professional Placement is assessed only at SCQF Level 10.

Careers

All successful UK and EU participants are guaranteed one year’s employment in a Scottish primary school via the GTCS Teacher Induction Scheme.

The majority of our students go on to enjoy careers as subject teachers initially. Thereafter, they may apply for promoted posts within the management teams in schools, or as Principal Teachers/ Curriculum Leaders. Some choose to enter other fields, operating as Education Officers within museums etc. Others undertake further study, to become Educational Psychologists etc. It is also possible to pursue a wide range of further careers, e.g. within Education Scotland, as Advisors/Directors within Local Education Authorities, within GTCS or in Initial Teacher Education in universities.

Recent participants in this programme have gone on to secure permanent posts in a range of settings, both within Scotland and abroad e.g. in International Schools. Some are operating within promoted posts in schools; others have been seconded to Education Scotland or returned to academic life as lecturers.

The University of Strathclyde has dedicated facilities for students on this course to be able to experience an environment similar to a teaching classroom. This includes a state-of-the-art wood workshop and a design and digital manufacturing facility. The result is students equipped to teach all subjects from wood craft to 3D printing.

Our technological education tutors are dedicated to the subject and can offer advice and help in all areas of craftwork, graphics, computer design and microprocessor programming. Educational Perspectives and Policies will develop your understanding of educational issues in a broader intellectual context while Principles and Policy in Practice is the companion module to Educational Perspective and Policies. It shares a focus on critical professional engagement informed by educational research and theory. Tutorials for both classes provide the opportunity to work with students from different subjects and from within the primary sector.

The course builds confidence in students to allow them to perform to their full potential by equipping them with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills they require.

Subject specific classes are known as Creative Contexts for Learning (CCL). Here, you’ll learn about pedagogical approaches specific to technological educationwith a highly experienced tutor.

The course also has links with several leading professionals in the world of design and technology teaching, who deliver school related aspects for the course. This time is used to familiarise you with the curriculum, allow you to collaborate with students and begin to plan lessons, develop materials, teach mini-lessons and to learn innovative and motivating ways to deliver the curriculum effectively. 

Rather than dividing our subject specific classes into small exercises from each part of the curriculum, the experience we offer here is a holistic one – designing, drawing and manufacture of items in an integrated way. Although class time is set by the PGDE timetable the facilities are open for students to use whenever they have free time.

A selection of areas of specific focus in design and technology include:

  • woodwork
  • 3D printing
  • CAD
  • graphics 
  • craftwork

You will also complete a Professional Specialism (PS) module which can be self-directed or comprised of on-campus classes which aims to allow you to develop your knowledge in an educational area of particular interest.  

Placement

You'll spend 18 weeks of the course on placement in a school within Scotland. You'll be continually assessed while there to show you meet the requirements for the Standards for Provisional Registration.

You must attend your placement school throughout the full working day. You must also attend school on staff in-service days, unless told otherwise by your school. 

Placement is your chance to put what you're learning into practice. You'll explore your own teaching style, learn new techniques and develop relationships with your pupils.

You must keep a portfolio of progress while on placement. This placement file will form part of the evidence of your meeting the Standards for Provisional registration and prepares you for the continuation of professional development during your professional teaching career.

Guaranteed employment for Scottish & EU students

If you're a Scottish or EU student, you're guaranteed a job for one year in a Scottish school after you graduate. This is part of the GTCS Teacher Induction Scheme.

Following graduation you should contact the GTCS for provisional registration. Once you complete your probationary year, you'll be awarded full registration.

Work anywhere in Scotland

Our course currently consists of three compulsory modules, one of which is taught in conjunction with PGDE (Primary) and is offered at both SCQF levels 10 and 11, giving the option of 40 credits of internationally-recognised Master's level study. You will develop an understanding of the curriculum and a range of approaches to teaching, learning and assessment in your chosen subject discipline(s).

You can also undertake an additional 20-credit module at Master's level.

  • Educational Perspectives & Policies
  • Principles, Policies & Practice

Educational Perspectives and Policies will develop your understanding of educational issues in a broader intellectual context while Principles and Policy in Practice is the companion module to Educational Perspective and Policies. It shares a focus on critical professional engagement informed by educational research and theory. Tutorials for both classes provide the opportunity to work with students from different subjects and from within the primary sector.

Subject specific classes are known as Creative Contexts for Learning (CCL). Here, you’ll learn about pedagogical approaches specific to English with a highly experienced tutor.

The course also has links with several leading professionals in the world of music teaching, who deliver school related aspects for the course. This time is used to familiarise you with the curriculum, allow you to collaborate with students, and begin to plan lessons, develop materials, and teach mini-lessons and to learn innovative and motivating ways to deliver the curriculum effectively.

A selection of areas of specific focus includes: Performance, Composition, Oral Tradition, Musical Theatre and Creative Music Making. These classes will enable you to build on pupil’s confidence and musical skill and to teach them to enjoy expressing themselves through music.

You'll also complete a Professional Specialism (PS) class which can be self-directed or comprised of on-campus classes. It aims to allow you to develop your knowledge in an educational area of particular interest.  

Placement

You'll spend 18 weeks of the course on placement in a school within Scotland. You'll be continually assessed while there to show you meet the requirements for the Standards for Provisional Registration.

You must attend your placement school throughout the full working day. You must also attend school on staff in-service days, unless told otherwise by your school. 

Placement is your chance to put what you're learning into practice. You'll explore your own teaching style, learn new techniques and develop relationships with your pupils.

You must keep a portfolio of progress while on placement. This placement file will form part of the evidence of your meeting the Standards for Provisional registration and prepares you for the continuation of professional development during your professional teaching career.

Guaranteed employment for Scottish & EU students

If you're a Scottish or EU student, you're guaranteed a job for one year in a Scottish school after you graduate. This is part of the GTCS Teacher Induction Scheme.

Following graduation you should contact the GTCS for provisional registration. Once you complete your probationary year, you'll be awarded full registration.

The biology component of the PGDE course builds on your existing knowledge of biology to transform it into a form which school pupils can understand. This component is taught in mixed groups of physics, chemistry and biology student teachers to allow students to learn from one another and to simulate working in a school science department or faculty. The general science component is taught by a combination of experienced science teacher educators and seconded teachers.

In addition, the general science component draws on the expertise of science educators from the Glasgow Science Centre and includes a visit to the Centre or other suitable sites to consider out-of-classroom learning in science. The general science component of the specialist PGDE science courses makes it easy for qualified teachers to find employment as teachers outside Scotland.

What you'll learn

While on campus you'll attend two general teaching classes:

  • Educational Perspectives & Policies (EPP)
  • Principles, Policies & Practice (PPP)

Educational Perspectives and Policies will develop your understanding of educational issues in a broader intellectual context whilst Principles and Policy in Practice is the companion module to Educational Perspective and Policies and shares a focus on critical professional engagement informed by educational research and theory. Tutorials for both classes provide the opportunity to work with students from different subjects and in the primary sector. The course builds confidence in students to allow them to perform to their full potential by equipping them with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills they require. Subject specific classes are known as Creative Contexts for Learning (CCL). Here, you’ll learn about pedagogical approaches specific to History with a highly experienced tutor.

The course also has links with several leading professionals in the world of History teaching, who deliver school related aspects for the course. This time is used to familiarise you with the curriculum, allow you to collaborate with students, and begin to plan lessons, develop materials, and teach mini-lessons and to learn innovative and motivating ways to deliver the curriculum effectively.

You'll also complete a Professional Specialism (PS) class which can be self-directed or comprised of on-campus classes which aims to allow you to develop your knowledge in an educational area of particular interest.  

Placement

You'll spend 18 weeks of the course on placement in a school within Scotland. You'll be continually assessed while there to show you meet the requirements for the Standards for Provisional Registration.

You must attend your placement school throughout the full working day. You must also attend school on staff in-service days, unless told otherwise by your school. 

Placement is your chance to put what you're learning into practice. You'll explore your own teaching style, learn new techniques and develop relationships with your pupils.

You must keep a portfolio of progress while on placement. This placement file will form part of the evidence of your meeting the Standards for Provisional registration and prepares you for the continuation of professional development during your professional teaching career.

Guaranteed employment for Scottish & EU students

If you're a Scottish or EU student, you're guaranteed a job for one year in a Scottish school after you graduate. This is part of the GTCS Teacher Induction Scheme.

Following graduation you should contact the GTCS for provisional registration. Once you complete your probationary year, you'll be awarded full registration.

What you'll learn

As the course is equally split between University-based and school-based placements, you are exposed to a wide range of ideas, contexts and challenges. Students are encouraged to make connections between this theory and practice and to reflect critically on what kind of teacher they aspire to be. The course enables students to draw on a wide range of resources and undertake extensive professional learning in order to lay the foundations for a successful teaching career.

All students will undertake a subject-specific module called Creative Contexts for Learning (CCL) Within the Modern Languages subject area, these classes are led by tutors who are inspirational language teachers and who facilitate weekly interactive sessions for the multilingual group. Tasks include micro-teaching, demonstration lessons and carousel lessons. You will work with a wide range of teaching materials and methods to help you to engage and inspire the young people in your care. Modern Languages CCL time allows you to familiarise yourself with the curriculum and collaborate with fellow students as you begin to plan lessons, develop materials and to learn innovative and motivating ways to deliver the curriculum effectively.

Upon successful completion of school placements and observation lessons during the first three School Placements, Modern Languages students may be given the opportunity to apply to complete Placement 4 abroad; in France or Spain; for a period of four weeks to three months. This is suitable for students who wish to experience life in a foreign school and further upskill their linguistic competency in order to bring this to their teaching career in Scotland.
