OVERVIEW

The programme of Master of Science in Applied Geographic Information Systems (hereafter MSc in Applied GIS), a single-degree coursework Master’s programme hosted in Department of Geography at NUS, is designed to reflect the cutting-edge technologies and latest developments in GIS and its applications with the reputation of NUS Geography as one of the top 10 geography departments around the world. This innovative programme provides an exciting opportunity for the prospective students to study at NUS, the top university in Asia, as a pathway to a PhD or further practical career in applied GIS or related disciplines.

We offer two tracks of training (Thesis Track and Project Track). The Thesis Track includes a research thesis component, which covers thesis preparation and the GIS research thesis itself. It aims to attract students with interests in applied GIS research and developing their research skills. The Project Track includes a GIS project component. It is designed for students who require practical GIS skills or an upgrade to their existing GIS expertise to progress their careers.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

Those who currently use or who wish to use GIS and its applications to their full extent will find the programme useful. Applications cover, but certainly not limited to, spatial assessment and management of natural resources, environmental/disaster monitoring and assessment, demographic analysis, public health, forensic sciences, transportation and urban planning, and business marketing.

Working professionals looking to deepen their skills in applied GIS or broaden their horizon outside their current field can leverage on this programme to boost career prospects in the GIS industry. The part-time study scheme allows working professionals the flexibility to balance study with work and personal commitments.

DURATION

Full-time students will study over three semesters, which start in Semester 1 (August–November), continue in Semester 2 (January–April), and end in Semester 3 (May–July). Students will take modules during the first two semesters and produce a thesis (for Thesis Track) or a project report (for Project Track) during the third semester.

Under normal circumstances, the period of candidature is 12 months of full-time study or 24 months of part-time study from the date of commencement of the course. The maximum period of candidature for both tracks of the MSc Programme is 24 months of full-time study or 36 months of part-time study from the date of commencement of the course, inclusive of approved leave of absence and medical leave. Leave of absence of up to one year will not be counted towards a candidate’s maximum candidature. Subsequent leave will be considered as part of the candidature.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The graduation requirements for both Thesis Track and Project Track are as follows:

(a) Thesis Track: students are required to complete six core modules and any two elective modules.
(b) Project track: students are required to complete five core modules and any four elective modules.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The Programme is structured to prepare students with applied GIS skills for carrying out research (Research Track) or for addressing industry needs (Project Track). It consists of core compulsory modules that provide trainings in fundamental GIS skills and basic applications, and elective modules that provide insights into specialized GIS applications in fields such as transportation, urban informatics, and environmental management. FEES AND PAYMENT

The tuition fee for AY2016-2017 intake is S$30,000 (inclusive of GST) for the entire programme for all students on the MSc irrespective of nationality. A non-refundable deposit of S$2,000, which counts toward the tuition fee, is due upon acceptance of the admission offer to the programme. The MRes (Master of Research) in Molecular Biophysics at King's College London offers an integrated training programme ideally suited to learn biophysical techniques crucially important to meet this challenge. We deliver an excellent foundation for students wishing to pursue careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, medical research, scientific administration within research councils or scientific publishing.

- Course purpose -

Our programme is designed for outstanding graduates in the life and physical sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics) who want to apply their knowledge to biological problems at the research level.

- Course format and assessment -

Taught modules cover biophysics and molecular biology techniques with elements of bioinformatics. We offer a wide selection of research projects to prepare students for a PhD degree. Students have also the exciting option of carrying out their research project at the National University of Singapore (NUS), with which we have partnered to move forward outstanding science.
MRC Advanced Course Master's studentships are available providing tuition fees and a stipend. All UK and specific EU applicants who meet the MRC’s eligibility requirement for these studentships will automatically be considered for these awards. For EU students, the programme carries 90 ECTS credits.

The first semester consists of a taught course in Advanced Biophysical Techniques which is assessed by examination in January; the examination counts for 80% of the assessment for this course and the in course practicals 20% [this module counts for 8.33% of the total Mark]. Also in the first semester students take Advanced Bioscience research laboratory techniques covering biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, assessed by write-ups [this module counts for 16.67 % of the total Mark]. Starting in January and continuing till the start of August is the Research project [this module counts for 75% of the total Mark] chosen from a range of research topics available within the research laboratories of the Randall Division of Cell and Molecular Biophysics and groups in Chemical Biology and the Biophysics grouping in the Franklin-Wilkins building. This is written up as dissertation (75%), presented as a seminar (15%) and examined as a viva (10%).

For example, Jonathon Porritt, former chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission, gives a guest lecture on the Sustainable Development Applications module, analysing the standing of sustainable development in business and policy making.

The extensive expertise of CES academics and researchers is also drawn upon in modules. Professor Tim Jackson, advisor to the government and international bodies and author of the seminal book, Prosperity without Growth – economics for a finite planet–also lectures on some CES modules.

INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT

Full-time students are able to undertake an industrial placement module which enables them to spend six to twelve weeks working for a company or NGO, doing the type of work they will aim to find on graduation.

Our MSc in Climate Change and Sustainability has been developed around two important principles:

1. the latest academic research from this field, which is used to give you all the necessary knowledge to work on sustainability issues;
2. the skills requirements of employers in the environmental sector, so that you can be sure of your employability.

Whether you want to work in the public, private, charitable or academic sector, our course has the flexibility to give you the focused knowledge and skills that are needed to start, or re-energise, your career.

The programme is based around 5 compulsory modules that provide the essential background to climate change and sustainability. Students then chose 3 optional modules to focus their studies on their particular area of interest e.g. energy, policy and law, environmental management, modelling and data analysis or environmental science. Indeed, our alumni have gone on to work in all these areas.

Aims

We aim to provide students with an interdisciplinary knowledge of the science and potential impacts of climate change across a variety of key areas, including energy, health, business, policy and technology. This is underpinned by a critical understanding of the concept of sustainability as applied to resource and energy use. The course will give you the skills and confidence required to develop creative and evidenced solutions to climate change and sustainability.

In so doing, we aim to meet the changing needs of society by generating graduates able to tackle the challenges presented by climate change, thus preparing them for careers that will span the transition to a post-carbon economy. The course content has been developed in consultation with our alumni, employers and using the findings of national surveys of environmental sector employers (i.e. the NERC Most Wanted Skills survey).

Accreditation

The MSc in Climate Change and Sustainability is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). For our September intake we have 2 specific scholarship schemes available: the Queen's Anniversary Prize Scholarships provide 6 x £3000 fee waiver scholarships to our best applicants (no additional application is required for these); and the £4000 Water Conservators Bursary is awarded to one student who writes the essay on water and the environment (some years we split the scholarship between 2 exceptional applicants). Brunel Univeristy London also has some scholarship schemes available for applicants to any MSc programme.

CES accommodates a wide range of disciplines dedicated to resolving environmental problems, and this Masters programme prepares a new generation of environment and sustainability professionals for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme equips you with the tools essential for analysis of the relationship between environmental issues and human society, in order to make informed decisions. As part of this approach, you will evaluate political, socio-economic, ethical, cultural and regulatory frameworks.

You will acquire a sensitive appreciation of issues surrounding sustainable development and an understanding of the theory and application of sustainable development.

This programme provides a route to graduate membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year. INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT

Full-time students are able to undertake an industrial placement module which enables them to spend six to twelve weeks working for a company or NGO, doing the type of work they will aim to find on graduation.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates go on to a diverse range of careers implementing sustainable development and dealing with the real environmental challenges facing humanity.

Recent examples include working as an energy efficiency officer for a local government, an environmental officer in multi-national chemical company, a sustainability advisor for a national television / radio station, an environmental consultant for an engineering consultancy, and a programme officer with a sustainability charity.

Other graduates use the research skills they developed to go on and do PhDs.
