Course details

The taught component of the Aerospace Vehicle Design masters is generally delivered from October to March (or March-August for the March intake). Modules for each option vary - please refer to MSc course option pages for descriptions of compulsory modules which must be undertaken. Students also have an extensive choice of optional modules to match their specific interests.

Group project

The extensive group design project is a distinctive and unique feature of this course. This teamwork project takes place from October to March (or March-August for the March intake), and recreates a virtual industrial environment bringing together students with various experience levels and different nationalities into one integrated design team.

Each team member is given the responsibility for the detailed design of a significant part of the aircraft, for example, forward fuselage, fuel system, or navigation system. The project progress a design from the conceptual phase through to the preliminary and detail design phases. Students will be required to run project meetings, produce engineering drawings and conduct detailed analyses of their design. Problem solving and project co-ordination must be undertaken on a team and individual basis. At the end of the project, the group is required to report and present findings to a panel of up to 200 senior engineers from industry and academia.

This element of the course is both realistic and engaging, and places the whole student group in a professional role as aerospace design engineers. Students testify that working as an integrated team on real problems is invaluable and prepares them well for careers in a highly competitive industry.

Students following the Structural Design option do not participate in the Group Design Project but instead undertake a more intensive individual project.

The specialist skills of aerospace production systems are vital to drive productivity improvements. You will gain the sought-after capability to manage major improvement programmes in the aerospace manufacturing industry or instigate intervention that delivers improvements to the performance of their businesses.

Who is it for?

This course develops future aerospace manufacturing engineers and managers who will be able to manage major improvement programmes or instigate intervention that delivers improvements to the performance of their aerospace manufacturing businesses.

Why this course?

The course combines Cranfield's long standing expertise for delivering high-quality Masters' programmes in both aerospace and manufacturing. Courses receive strong support from the global aerospace industry, both the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) such as Airbus and Rolls-Royce, as well as their tiers of supplier. There is a strong emphasis on applying knowledge in the industrial environment and all teaching is in the context of industrial application. Many features of this course are shared with the Engineering and Management of Manufacturing Systems MSc, but this course specifically prepares graduates to embark on a career in aerospace manufacturing.

Students benefit from our wide range of equipment, analysis tools and specialist software packages. The course objectives are achieved through a carefully integrated and structured series of eight one-week assessed modules, a group project and an individual project.

Informed by Industry

Our courses are designed to meet the training needs of industry and have a strong input from experts in their sector. Students who have excelled have their performances recognised through course awards. The awards are provided by high profile organisations and individuals, and are often sponsored by our industrial partners. Awards are presented on Graduation Day.

The programme has been designed in close collaboration with NHS partners to support the development of foundation stage pharmacist practitioners following registration. It develops the practitioner student's underpinning knowledge and skills in clinical pharmacy practice and medicines management.

We work on a philosophy of student-centred workplace learning, supported by workbooks and learning sets facilitated by experienced pharmacy practitioners. The practitioner students are expected to take responsibility for managing their learning and achieving the course objectives in support of their continuing professional development (CPD).

Students will gain the understanding needed to conduct effective consultations with patients respecting their diverse needs and with regard to confidentiality and consent, and to identify, prioritise and resolve complex pharmaceutical care issues.

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert)

There is one intake each year for students starting on the certificate level of the programme. Students begin in March of each year and attend eight learning sets over a period of 18 months. By October of the following year, if all the assessments have been passed, students can either exit with a postgraduate certificate or transfer to the postgraduate diploma.

The certificate comprises one compulsory course entitled "Practitioner Development and Establishment of Professional and Clinical Practice" (60 credits).

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)

The postgraduate diploma consists of two separate courses:

  • Developing Self, Others and Your Operational Management Skills (30 credits), and
  • Ensuring Patient Safety and a Quality Service (30 credits).

Each course runs for six months, starting in March and October, and consists of three learning sets. Most students complete the certificate and then transfer immediately to the diploma. There is flexibility in the system and students can delay before transferring if necessary. Students must complete within six years of the certificate start date.

Master's degree (MSc)

Students who have successfully completed the postgraduate diploma in general pharmacy practice can elect to continue to the MSc. This consists of a research project, supported by academics with expertise in practice research. Students will gain expertise in research techniques, be supported to write a protocol and complete either an NHS or university ethics application and collect and analyse data. Start dates are in September, January and April.

Collaboration

The certificate and the diploma are commissioned by Health Education England London and the South East – Kent Surrey Sussex (HEE LaSE KSS) and are jointly delivered with the University of Brighton. PGCert level learning sets take place in Kent, Surrey and Sussex and the PGDip courses are delivered by both institutions concurrently enabling students to elect which to do first and which location best fits with work and home travel.

The programme is run at the Medway School of Pharmacy by academics and practising healthcare professionals. Please visit http://www.msp.ac.uk for more information on the school and http://www.msp.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate/cert-gen-pharm-pract for more details on this programme.

The role of pharmacists in the emergency department offers an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice. Pharmacists are also extending their scope of practice in urgent and acute medicine areas in primary and secondary care.

Our six-month Advanced Clinical Skills short course enables trainee pharmacy practitioners to independently evaluate, assess and recommend or prescribe medicines for patients who present to emergency departments.

This will allow junior and senior medical staff to attend to more urgent medical patients in a clinical setting and aims to decrease waiting times for patients with minor injuries. Research has shown that hospital pharmacists with additional skills in independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to emergency departments.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to manage emergency and urgent patients in addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary emergency, acute medicine and urgent care team.

Our course confers 30 postgraduate (Level 7) credits upon completion and can be taken as a standalone course by pharmacists who are already non-medical prescribers. If you are not already a non-medical prescriber, you can take this course before starting our Independent Prescribing short course . Completing both of these courses within two years of registering will lead to a PGCert in Advanced Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine .

Aims

This course aims to:

  • provide you with the skills to independently evaluate and assess patients who present to the emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting;
  • enable you to independently recommend and/or prescribe appropriate medicines for patients who present to the emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting;
  • enhance your knowledge and skills in the evaluation and application of knowledge of best evidence-based practice to implement appropriate assessment and care for the emergency, acute medicine or urgent care patient.

Special features

Develop in-demand skills

This course was launched in response to a national pilot that identified clear demand for pharmacists with specific skills in emergency medicine.

Teaching and learning

You will learn using a blended approach that includes face-to-face sessions and online learning through our Blackboard platform.

This will allow you to continue to work in the NHS and study at a time that is convenient for you.

There will be on-campus study days to allow for face-to-face contact, teaching in groups, interaction with the other students, and practical skills demonstrations. You will also undergo supported learning in the emergency department where you are based.

2018 study days

Provisional dates for the February 2018 intake are:

  • 14 and 15 February 2018
  • 14 and 15 March 2018
  • 18 and 19 April 2018
  • 23 and 24 May 2018

Dates for the September 2018 intake are yet to be arranged and will be published here when confirmed.

Coursework and assessment

We will assess your progress through:

  • a reflective practice e-portfolio;
  • a two-hour OSCE exam;
  • a patient case presentation;
  • sign-off by emergency department consultant to confirm satisfactory completion of 15 days of practice-based learning.

Course content for year 1

There are two core units:

Advanced Clinical Assessment (mandatory)

Unit code: PHAR60231

Credit rating: 15

This unit aims to develop enhanced knowledge and skills in the evaluation and application of knowledge of best evidence-based practice to implement appropriate assessment and care for the emergency, acute medicine and urgent care patient.

You will acquire the understanding and skills required to undertake and order a range of common practical assessment skills and diagnostic tests used in the emergency department, acute medicine and urgent care setting.

Your skills in interpreting results of commonly used diagnostic tests in the emergency department, acute medicine and urgent care setting will also be developed.

Emergency Medicine (mandatory)

Unit code:PHAR60241

Credit rating: 15

The unit introduces pharmacists to the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the assessment and the management of patients who are requiring urgent care and who are at risk of becoming acutely unwell.

Working in the clinical environment (emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting), this unit will build on existing knowledge of the use of a structured and systematic approach in the assessment of the urgent care patient, identifying the need for physiological and holistic care.

Practitioners can develop competencies in a specific patient group and provide patient-centred care for cohorts of patients in emergency or urgent care whom they are likely to manage within their scope of practice.

Facilities

You will use a state-of-the-art SimMan to practice clinical skills during your face-to-face study days at the University.

The University of Manchester also offers extensive library and online services to help you get the most out of your studies.

Disability support

The course includes eight days of compulsory university-attended sessions (nine for nurses/midwives) and 18 days of self-directed learning, which will be delivered through e-learning and self-directed study.

In addition, you must undertake 12 days of supervised practice with your designated medical practitioner, which amounts to 78 hours for nurses/midwives or 90 hours for pharmacists.

Please note that successful completion of an accredited course is not a guarantee of annotation or of future employment as a pharmacist independent prescriber.

You can view accreditation reports and timescales for future accreditation on the General Pharmaceutical Council website . You can confirm our accreditation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council on their website .

Please check online for course dates. If there are no dates for your preferred cohort, please contact us to enquire. Attendance at all teaching and assessment days is mandatory, so it is important to confirm that you are able to attend them all before you apply.

Please check online for details of fees, which may be subject to change and apply only to the dates given.

Aims

The course aims to use your current experiences of practice and encourage the development and application of new knowledge and skills to practice.

We aim to:

  • enable you to successfully meet the standards set out by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), allowing you to apply for registration to practice as an independent prescriber;
  • produce competent non-medical prescribers who can provide safe, effective and evidence-based prescribing to address the needs of patients in practice;
  • enable pharmacists and nurses to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes required for safe and effective prescribing practice;
  • help you develop a systematic, evidence-based and reflective approach to independent prescribing practice;
  • identify your own learning needs, develop as a critically reflective practitioner and advance your own learning to sustain continuing professional development, and work at the forefront of your profession.

Additional course information

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Do I need an NMP lead signature on my application form?

Not if you are self-funding. If you are being financially supported HENW, then yes.

What does a level 7 course mean and are the credits transferable?

Level 7 study is master's level, which means that you must have an undergraduate degree to undertake this course. The course offers 30 credits, which may be transferrable to other courses. We would advise that you check with the other courses in the first instance.

Can I pay the course fees in instalments?

No, due to university regulations, it is not possible to pay fees in instalments for this course. All fees must be paid prior to commencing the course.

Teaching and learning

A range of teaching methods are used to develop the knowledge and understanding, practical skills, intellectual skills and personal qualities required to become a competent prescriber.

Learning is divided into two units, which will be delivered online as weekly content designed to complement the university-based study sessions.

The online material can be studied in your own time, and will involve directed reading, online discussion and learning activities. As such, you need to be self-motivated to learn in your own time. You must also have a fairly good level of IT skills, as the learning requires you to navigate Blackboard and an electronic portfolio.

The eight university-based study days are designed to enhance student learning by providing the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to learning including group activities, teaching OSCEs, and practical skill sessions.

A minimum of 12 days' learning in practice under the supervision of a designated medical practitioner should be carried out during the four-month course. During this time, students are required to complete a reflective practice portfolio to document and reflect on their learning.

Please note that this is an accelerated course that covers a large amount of learning in a very short space of time. You will need to engage fully with the course, as you will need to complete 26 days of learning and 12 days of supervised practice in this timescale.

Only you can decide whether this approach works for you, but you must be prepared to commit fully for the duration of the course.

2018 teaching dates

  • 6-7 March 2018
  • 8 March 2018 (mandatory for nurses/midwives, optional for pharmacists)
  • 4-5 April 2018
  • 23-24 April 2018
  • 5-6 June 2018

Coursework and assessment

We use the following assessment methods:

  • two and a quarter-hour multiple choice question (MCQ) and short answer examination;
  • six-station Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE);
  • patient case study (3,000 words);
  • reflective practice portfolio linked to development of competence in practice.

Course unit details

The course will cover:

  • assessment, consultation skills and history taking;
  • legal and professional issues relating to independent prescribing;
  • decision making and evidence based prescribing;
  • psychological and ethical issues applied to prescribing;
  • pharmacology and drug actions;
  • leadership, accountability and clinical governance.

Much of the curriculum has been determined by the NMC and the GPhC.

The learning material is divided into two units, each running for seven weeks.

This Master's course embraces the International and National advanced clinical practice picture supporting the development of your knowledge and skills at an advanced level, to prepare you for your Advanced Clinical Practice or Advanced Nurse Practitioner role. You'll extend your analytical and reflective skills, as well as integrating new and existing clinical skills within your practice setting to provide high-quality healthcare within the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.

There are two pathways available, if you are a nurse then the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Advanced Nurse Practitioner) qualification will be most suitable; for midwives, allied health professionals and other non-medical healthcare professionals, the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice route is appropriate. The final year of the course concentrates on a service improvement project enabling you to combine the clinical elements of your advanced clinical role with leadership/management and service development and improvement.

Whilst all the intakes are open for all NMC registrants and registered allied health professionals and other non-medical healthcare professionals, the March 2018 intake has the additional focus on mental health for mental health nurses advancing their mental health practice, as opposed to physical health. This intake is also more appropriate for midwives advancing their midwifery practice.

Description

The Neuroscience MSc inspires the next generation of neuroscientists. The course brings together home and international Students from various academic backgrounds. Our vision is to provide Students with multidisciplinary training in a broad range of neuroscience topics, particularly those relating to psychiatry, psychology, neuroscience and neurology. We believe that our Teaching and Research goals can best be achieved through our Students, Scientists and Clinicians working together on common problems. This approach transforms Students' theoretical and practical knowledge of the neurosciences, and provides them with the applied and professional skills they need for their future careers. In short, our objective is to provide students with a good foundation for life.

The Programme provides:

  • Students with core teaching and learning in a wide range of neuroscience domains (3 fundamental modules) and a choice of a specialised pathway (optional modules).
  • Multidisciplinary training in neuroscience topics ranging from the molecular to the behavioural. Modules are taught using a variety of teaching methods ranging from didactic instruction through to student-led seminar/tutorial work.
  • Rich research experience (research module) in high quality research environments.
  • Skills, career and professional development in topics relevant to biomedical research. This is done through various exercises including presentation of original research data in both poster and scientific paper formats.
  • Clinicians with specialised supplementary training.
  • A specialised knowledge of a broad range of neuroscience topics relevant to mental illness, psychology and neurology.
  • Students with the ability to conduct high quality research and to present their findings to different audiences.

Course Objectives

Successful students should be able to demonstrate:

  • Specialised knowledge in a broad range of neuroscience topics relevant to mental illness and neurology.
  • The ability to conduct high quality research and to present their findings effectively.
  • The high level of achievement appropriate for students wishing to undertake further research and/or training.

MSc Neuroscience Students take three broad-based neuroscience modules during their first term. During the second term Students ‘specialise’ by choosing one of six taught optional modules, ‘Psychiatric Genetics’, ‘Developmental Neurobiology’, ‘Neurodegeneration’, ‘Neuroimaging’, ‘Cognitive Neuroscience’ and ‘Neural Stem Cells and Nervous System Repair’. In the third and final term, Students work together with their Scientist / Clinician Supervisors to produce original research.

While most students applying to the course have a degree in a basic biomedical science or in Psychology, the course attracts a much wider range of applicants. These include:

  • Clinicians eager to understand current knowledge and to apply it in their own research or practice and;
  • Students with backgrounds in the physical sciences, mathematics or computing keen to develop, for example, more advanced methods of analysing data from neuroimaging and genetic studies.
  • Graduates who have a strong interest in Neuroscience are also encouraged to apply, and will be considered on an individual basis.

MSc Neuroscience in a speciality

To obtain an MSc in a speciality, students must complete the 3 compulsory taught fundamental modules (A1-A3), followed by a further taught specialised optional module (from Modules B1-B8) and a research project (from Modules C1-C8) in the same speciality.

While every effort will be made to accommodate a student's wishes, the number of research projects that can be offered on each speciality is dependent on availability.

The degree of MSc Neuroscience will be awarded to:

  • those students who choose a research project that is in a different speciality from their optional taught module. Also included are students who choose research projects that fall outside the specialities encompassed by B1-B8, for example, a research project in eating disorders.
  • part-time students who are not able to attend one of the specialised taught modules (B1-B8) when they are given to the full-time students but instead attend the B Neuroscience research module.

Course format and assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, field work and self-study.

You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations.

Career prospects

This course provides excellent training for students who wish to pursue a broad range of careers including an academic or research career, or those who wish to enter medical school, the pharmaceutical industry, or train as clinical psychologists, or work as scientific writers.
