Program overview

The master of science in health systems administration provides strategic skills for today’s health care management professionals. Now, as never before, health care is rapidly transforming. The pace of technology and innovation are changing how, when, and where healthcare is provided, and who is providing it. The course has three specific pathways. The generic pathway allows you to learn every aspect of modern business administration, with transferable skills you can take to any given sector.
-MBA
-MBA (Healthcare Management)
-MBA (Environmental Management and Sustainability)

If you are looking to further your career in areas of Healthcare Management or Environmental and Sustainability Management, then our two specialist pathways will allow you to do this. You'll be given valuable insight and specific skills into these two huge sectors of global business.

What's covered in the course?

Our course provides the opportunity to combine the theory and practice of management, healthcare management, and environmental sustainability in an interactive online environment where you will be studying with other students from internationally diverse background and also have the support and guidance of specialists in the various fields of study.

The programmes of study will provide you with the skills employers really value, so it is the perfect option if you want to change career directions or aim to move up the corporate ladder. We’ll nurture your skills by helping you devise contemporary and forward-thinking strategies and day-to-day tactics that’ll help organisations thrive in a range of business settings.

The Online Master of Business Administration and the two specialist pathways will run on a part-time and full-time basis. There will be initially three entry points per calendar year, so we have flexibility in terms of delivery and also starting point.

Our programme has a very flexible approach and you can study up to three modules at any one time on a full-time basis or you can study a module at a time at your own pace within the specified registration period.

Assessment is of a practical nature and will be examination based. There are many opportunities to assess your progress throughout the modules and there is a facility for a practice examination that provides feedback on your performance.

Employability

Unlike undergraduate degrees, which are designed to get students into industry, our MBA degrees are aimed at existing industry professionals looking to climb further up the career ladder.

Companies around the world are now looking for a different kind of manager. They need people with different skillsets that can look at situations and opportunities in unique ways. Our MBA degrees will give you the tools to stand out from the rest.

Upon completion, you will be able to effect positive change, both in your own professional practice, and within your organisation. On a personal level, you’ll be able to utilise new skills and methods to improve your efficiency, your critical engagement, and your ability to instigate change.

Successful improvements in your personal professional practice will then benefit your organisation. The MBA degree alone can open doors, but the possibilities opened to you by utilising your skills to improve your organisation are even more impressive.

Already a managing director, in charge of your own company? The MBA degree can still benefit you internally and externally. The knowledge and skills you will pick up over the course of your degree can allow you to become an industry leader, growing your company’s reputation through innovation. The accompanying benefits of this could help cement your company’s industry position for years to come.

Double Masters – Double Excellence

The Double Masters Programme in Health Economics provides highly qualified students with the opportunity to profit from the first class expertise of two universities. Participants study at each university for one year and graduate with two Master's degrees from these renowned institutions: The Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences, University of Cologne, and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht University.

Health Economics is an interdisciplinary science in-between economics and medicine. The Double Masters Programme in Health Economics has a strong focus on innovation in the healthcare sector and on current and future healthcare challenges.

The Double Masters Programme prepares students for responsible management positions in the public and private health care sector. Students develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the management of the health care sector and gain in-depth knowledge of health economics and innovation in healthcare, together with strong intercultural competencies. Upon completion of this programme, graduates will be able to apply economic concepts to medical questions and actively address challenges of today's complex and rapidly changing healthcare sector.

Holding a German and a Dutch Master's degree, the graduates will have excellent perspectives on the European and the international labour market.

Please note that the Double Master is a consecutive programme, i.e. you need for application a Bachelor (or equivalent) with strong proficiency in Business Administration, Management Studies or Health Economics (60 ECTS). Furthermore, a minimum of 15 ECTS in the field of medicine and further 18 ECTS in the methods of the Health Economics are required. Unfortunately, University of Cologne's admission rules do not leave room for substituting work experience for credits. Please take a look at your transcript and verify that you meet the above mentioned criteria. Moreover, please bear in mind that the TOEFL/IELTS/etc. are indispensable requirements for an application and have to be submitted until the application deadline. Oxford’s new MSc in Nanotechnology for Medicine and Health Care builds on the world-leading research in nanomedicine at the University’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering and other departments in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division and Medical Sciences Division. This advanced modular course is delivered by leading scientists and experts in this rapidly developing field and has been specifically designed for those who would value a part-time modular learning structure, for example those in full-time employment, both in the UK and overseas.

The MSc is designed to be completed part-time, normally over a two- to three-year period, and so provides a path to career development that is flexible and recognised within academia and industry. The programme comprises three online modules exploring the fundamentals of science and materials characterisation at the nanoscale, three intensive five-day face-to-face modules describing the clinical and commercial application of such science, and a piece of original lab-based research leading to the submission of a dissertation. This modular structure provides an adaptable approach to learning, and each module may also be taken as an individual short course.

There are opportunities to access and learn about cutting-edge research and current practice in a wide range of nanotechnology and healthcare topics from experts with experience of taking nanotechnologies from basic concept through clinical validation to market realisation. The tutor-led approach lends cohesion to the modular experience which is tailored for busy people in full-time employment who wish to minimise time away from the workplace to study.

Description

Nanotechnology is the production and application of devices and systems at the nanometre scale, which is of the order of one billionth of a metre. Developments in this area of technology are now coming to fruition, and increasingly impacting on our daily lives. In particular, nanotechnology is becoming a crucial driving force behind innovation in medicine and healthcare, with a range of advances including nanoscale therapeutics, biosensors, implantable devices and imaging systems. However, the pace with which this revolution is occurring has left even some of its leading practitioners lacking in aspects of the key fundamental knowledge or the information required to navigate the regulatory and clinical pathway to achieve market realisation.

The University of Oxford's MSc in Nanotechnology for Medicine and Health Care offers a detailed and cutting-edge education in this subject and builds on the successful Postgraduate Certificate in Nanotechnology, which was launched in 2006. The course is taken part-time as a mixture of online and face-to-face modules, meaning it can fit around the demands of those working full-time and can be studied by international students without the requirement to relocate. The course uses a blend of individual study of learning materials, together with group work during live online tutorials, conventional lectures and discussions and also requires the student to submit a dissertation reporting an original piece of nanomedicine-based research. The group sessions with tutors are particularly valuable because they offer highly focused learning and assessment opportunities.

Programme details

The MSc in Nanotechnology for Medicine and Health Care is a part-time course consisting of six modules and a research project and associated dissertation. The programme is normally completed in two to three years. Students are full members of the University of Oxford and are matriculated as members of an Oxford college.

The modules in this programme can also be taken as individual short courses. It is possible to transfer credit from up to three previously completed modules into the MSc programme, if the time elapsed between commencement of the accredited module(s) and registration on the MSc is not more than two years.

The course comprises:

- three online modules giving a thorough introduction to the fundamental science of nanotechnology and the behaviour and characterisation of nanoscale materials;

- three five-day modules taught face-to-face in Oxford explaining the scientific, regulatory, clinical and commercial aspects of the application of nanotechnology to medicine and healthcare

- an original research project of approximately 18 weeks to be written up as a dissertation

The course has a dedicated Course Director, Associate Director and administration team accustomed to supporting students undertaking distance learning and face-to-face courses. Students have access to staff at the University of Oxford’s Begbroke Science Park and Institute of Biomedical Engineering, particularly the Course Director, Professor Robert Carlisle and the Associate Course Director, Dr Christiane Norenberg.

Throughout the course, students can use the University of Oxford’s excellent electronic library resources to enable them to complete the assignment tasks.

Programme modules:

- Module 1: The Wider Context of Nanotechnology (online)
- Module 2: The Fundamental Science of Nanotechnology (online)
- Module 3: Fundamental Characterisation for Nanotechnology (online with two-day component in Oxford)
- Module 4: Introduction to Bionanotechnology (in Oxford)
- Module 5: Nanomedicine – Science and Applications (in Oxford)
- Module 6: Clinical Translation and Commercialisation of Nanomedicine (in Oxford)

To complete the MSc, students need to attend the six modules and complete the assessed written assignments for each module, and complete a research project with dissertation on a topic chosen in consultation with a supervisor and the Course Director.
