The MA International Fashion Marketing brings together two disciplines for which Regent’s is internationally renowned – fashion and marketing – to provide future fashion marketing managers and directors with the practical and intellectual skills to lead and succeed in the vibrant and fast-changing fashion industry.

Our MA programme has been developed in consultation with industry experts and designed to ensure that our graduates are best placed to capitalise on new opportunities presented by the most sustained period of creative disruption in fashion since the industrial revolution.

Technological innovation is challenging long-established fashion systems and changing the ways in which the industry markets itself globally. Dynamic and fast-paced by nature, the industry is set to continue this period of disruption for the foreseeable future.

Our programme will place you at the heart of the fashion-business revolution, located in central London, the heartland of fashion.

In addition, you will benefit from a study trip to Milan, included in the fees, and have the opportunity to go to Paris and New York, covering all four of fashion’s premier destinations.

Work Placement

Gain first-hand experience in the industry with a four-week (160-hour) work placement, which takes place either part time during the program or full time at the end of the program. Placements provide the valuable work experience employers seek.

Your Career

According to City of Toronto data, the fashion industry employs nearly 50,000 people. Fashion design, wholesaling and retailing have grown dramatically in the last five years, with 10,000 fashion-related jobs. There are 4,600 fashion retail firms in Toronto that generate annual sales of $2.6 billion. Sales have grown by 6.4 per cent in the last year. Employment in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 34.5 per cent or 13,000 jobs in the last five years.

Graduates may find employment in companies that develop, manufacture, market, import, wholesale, distribute or retail fashion apparel and accessories. Employment settings include apparel suppliers, wholesale distribution companies, fashion retail companies, importers and logistics firms, marketing divisions within major retail operations, and up and coming online businesses. The program equips you for roles such as product development manager, private label/brand manager, retail manager, event manager, retail buyer, fashion manager relating to sourcing, logistics co-ordinator, inventory control manager, visual merchandiser, promotion manager or planner. Online retailing offers positions in community management, social media marketing and opportunities in customer service inventory management.

Overview

This dynamic new course will prepare you for the world of contemporary, global fashion design, improving your professional skills, your academic understanding and your industry knowledge.

You’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of the international fashion world, and the business-led factors that influence professional practice.

Our course mixes traditional and experimental fashion design processes with theory and practical work. This will encourage you to think about important issues and future trends in the fashion industry and how you could adapt or improve upon your design, styling, marketing or promotional work. For example, you might explore relationships between your design process, marketing strategy and psychological theories. Or you might look at the connections between mathematics and pattern-cutting; or sustainable design and production processes.

We'll investigate different markets and consumers, too. Having learned more about people's wants and needs, you'll use your insight to create innovative designs, along with branding and promotional strategies.

Throughout the course you'll be working closely with other students. Together, we'll share and debate our ideas and working practices, and learn to critically analyse our work.

Your studies will take place over three trimesters in a single calendar year.

You’ll also be well-prepared for related roles, such as styling and promotion, brand and marketing management, PR management/press, fashion production, buying or trend forecasting.

Course Structure

Subject specific modules for this course include a lecture and seminar programme, a portfolio of concepts and treatments, research strategy, portfolio – short projects (management), and a major project / dissertation, where you can write about a subject you enjoy in much greater depth.

Theoretical concepts will be delivered in a lecture, followed by smaller group seminars based on case study analysis. Short, post-lesson ‘fact’ tests will be made available over Moodle, with discussion and interactive sessions will encourage you to critically examine key elements of business and management.

The Postgraduate course in Fashion and Lifestyle Brand Studies is predominantly theoretical, analytical and research based, allowing individuals from related disciplines who do not necessarily have appropriate practical skills, to study at postgraduate level within the fashion environment.

Individual projects will address a range of student led interests, supported by theoretical underpinning. Case Studies will inform the background issues emerging in the industry, whilst also exemplifying key directions for future markets. Study trips are an essential part of research activity that brings design to life. Throughout the programme, students are introduced to contemporary influences with international city trips and study visits to exhibitions and museums - Manchester, London, Berlin and New York have been regular trips in recent years (students will be required to pay for overseas trips/visits and these are, therefore, optional).

The opportunity for a structured work experience will be provided for every student who requests it. This is a major commitment by the University to help our graduates to reach their potential and thrive in their careers after graduation.

A course module that will help you plan your career is available as a free choice module (called an elective), which you can study as part of your degree programme.

Textile Design for Fashion will provide you with opportunity for practice-based postgraduate study in the creation of innovative textile designs and concepts for fashion end use. Outcomes could be related to design, styling, forecasting and prediction, fashion promotion and consultancy, visual merchandising, art direction, publishing or pursuing further postgraduate study. You will be encouraged to develop design content that allows you to explore alternative ways of engaging with fashion and textiles audiences such as trend books, new media or websites, photography, film, or print media such as magazines and look-books. Your work should demonstrate a keen sense of contextual awareness, knowing where the work fits in the world and how the world might affect it. The programme will emphasize the importance of being digitally articulate; you are welcome to combine this with traditional media and design processes.

Course Content

The MA Design: Textiles for Fashion is made up of four units totalling 180 credits.

The programme is designed to help you acclimatise to the challenges of MA level research and practice, enabling you to identify and describe a clear direction for your postgraduate design study.

You will be encouraged to develop design propositions that encompass key design issues and have complexity and ambition, taking full consideration of the relative contextual drivers.

You will also be encouraged and supported to extend your experience in the professional sphere. either through a practical project, research context, exchange, work experience, or other negotiated professional set of interactions with an external partner, groups of students and creative industry.

Towards the end of the programme you will undertake a major project to consolidate your past research and practice into fully realised collections, pieces, proposals, business plans, or exhibitions – whatever means is appropriate to the work. You will also have developed a strategy for the continuation of your practice located and contextualised to the profession or discipline.

If you choose to progress to MFA Design: Textiles For Fashion award you will study a further two units of 60 credits each.

This route is focused on the continuation of your practice aligned to the research and selection of appropriate public or professional venues and platforms to disseminate a significant body of work. You will be required to produce work for a public audience in the most relevant and appropriate form along with any implicit publicity and dissemination material.

The Master of Enterprise (MEnt) Textiles and Fashion degree, offered in partnership with the Manchester Science and Enterprise Centre (MSEC), is a unique and exciting programme which provides a portal to guide you into the textile and fashion enterprise culture. Graduates of the programme have gone on to launch their own businesses or work for small and large global companies.

The programme will provide you with the latest technological know-how in your chosen area, building on your existing knowledge, and teach you the specific enterprise skills necessary for the successful launch and growth of a small company. The programme will also develop your understanding of the role of innovation and knowledge transfer in enterprise.

The programme
Prior to joining the programme, you will normally have developed an enterprise idea – in some case you will have developed a product or service, as part of your final undergraduate degree, which you would like to turn into a business - but this is not compulsory.

The programme is made up of two core taught units (delivered by MSEC), Enterprise project, two elective taught units (delivered by the School of Materials) and a dissertation. The elective programme units run in parallel with the Enterprise project and provide and enhance the essential background to enable you to develop your idea, product or service.

You will be assessed by a combination of continuous assessment and examination.

Combine creative and business knowledge and skills to develop a solid understanding of the fashion industry in this international, inter-disciplinary course.

Content

Please note: This course will run at Level 6, which is equivalent to the final year of a BA Honours degree, and is a preparatory course for students who want to study at postgraduate level, but currently need further knowledge and skills before being eligible for postgraduate study. A one-year conversion course for students who have a 2.1 or higher first degree in an area unrelated to fashion management, this course will enable students who come from different paths of study to progress onto fashion management postgraduate courses or enter employment.

The international student body on the Graduate Diploma Fashion Management, reflects the internationalisation of the fashion industry. Students are encouraged to draw on their own experience to develop a global understanding of the relevant dynamics affecting the fashion industry. Drawing on the field of International Business, Marketing, Operations Management and Creative Management, this inter-disciplinary course will cover a wide range of topics, including the establishment of the fashion industry, its internationalisation drivers, product development and product life cycles, fashion forecasting, fashion marketing and marketing communications with a specific focus on social media, consumer behaviour and fashion branding.

This provides students with a rich and stimulating learning experience from which to progress, culminating in a final project that is self-negotiated and relevant to their future aspirations. Many students progress onto MA study while others move into employment, defining and establishing their roles within the sector including positions in PR, marketing, management and product development.

Structure

The Fashion Language and Context unit (20 credits) enables students to locate their own work within global economic, social, cultural and technological contexts. Students will have the chance to enrich their own understanding by engaging in debate and by exchanging ideas with students across a range of courses within the School of Graduate studies from diverse backgrounds and with expertise in a range of fashion disciplines. This will enable students to share experiences and benefit from interdisciplinary approaches to the subject. The unit is underpinned by English support specifically directed to enable students to fully understand and evaluate language used within these discourses.

The introductory units Fashion Business Environment and Creative Fashion Management will provide a variety of specialist knowledge required as a solid base for study. The second term will build on that knowledge with Fashion Marketing Management. The Fashion Business Project unit will enable you to specialise in your own interests and to research a self-selected topic from three subject areas of management.

Fashion Business Environment (20 credits) will consider strategies and concepts for different types of business from small and medium enterprises to large corporations. Creative Fashion Management (20 credits) looks at key requirements such as innovation, creativity and new product development. A more specialist in depth approach to Fashion Marketing Management (20 credits) will explore branding and marketing communication theories and practices.

The final term offers you the opportunity to specialise in one of three areas of expertise, retailing, marketing and creative management for the final Fashion Business Project (40 credits). This unit enables you to follow your own specific interests and create a project title of your choice with the support and approval of the Course Director.
