This 12-unit course provides students with the full range of quantitative and analytical skills necessary to work in the broad domain of clinical health. It especially focuses on developing skills in the quantitative methods of clinical research and application to patient care.

Students must complete 9 core units, plus either 3 electives or 1 elective and a 12 credit point project.

Teaching is structured as a combination of on-line educational delivery, and face to face block days which suits busy professionals and those who balance other responsibilities in their lives.

Students may quality for entry into a PhD by the following pathways:

Successfully completing the Master of Clinical Research Methods including a Distinction average in: chronic diseases: epidemiology and prevention; regression methods for epidemiology; advanced statistical methods for clinical research; clinical measurement and systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

OR

Completing the Master of Clinical Research Methods including the 12 credit point project and achieve a Distinction average in epidemiology and prevention; regression methods for epidemiology; advanced statistical methods for clinical research; and clinical measurement.

Programme Modules, Mode of Study and Awards

The MSc Clinical Research consists of six compulsory modules. As well as these modules, the students will have the opportunity to acquire their Good Clinical Practice certificate and complete the NHS Leadership “Edward Jenner” online programme during their studies.

The MSc Clinical Research is offered on a one year full-time basis or on a part-time basis from two years to a maximum of five years. Individual modules can also be taken.

The programme leads to the following awards:
- MSc Clinical Research – 180 credits required to be passed at level 7 and includes all six modules
- Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methodologies (Clinical Research) - 120 credits required to be passed at level 7 and includes all the modules, except the Clinical Research Dissertation module

This is an exciting research based programme of study specifically designed for the NIHR to develop research skills and academic careers for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, launching in February 2013.

Why study this course?
MSc Clinical Research Methods is the starting point for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals who wish to pursue a career as a clinical academic combining research with clinical practice.

How will I benefit from this course?
The programme provides clinical research training – which can then be used as the basis for a career in research, whether working towards a PhD or to provide an understanding of clinical research to underpin managerial positions in the NHS.

A bespoke masters degree
The course has been designed to be student - centred, providing the opportunity to shape learning to specific training needs and clinical settings. This is through tailoring assessments in modules, with the opportunity to set personal curriculum in one of the compulsory modules and a clinically focused research dissertation.

Flexible delivery
The programme will be delivered part-time over two years and full-time, over one year and most modules are delivered as full-day blocks. This allows students the opportunity to plan timetables in order to meet the competing demands of clinical practice and academic studies.

Specialist support
All students studying on the MSc in Clinical Research Methods will be allocated an academic supervisor who will assist students in identifying their academic training needs. They will assist on their personal development, incorporating promotion of reflection utilising a Personal Development Profile.

Online support
We have developed an on-line research methods self assessment package which students can access flexibly on or off-campus. This allows students to take ownership of their learning, in particular to revisit prior learning where needed and build on new learning using self-regulated learning styles.

The study experience
Students will work and study in a research environment rated as ‘World Leading’ in the RAE, * alongside existing PhD scholars and Masters students in a challenging multi- professional environment in which to develop their learning and understanding of clinical research.
The MSc draws on expertise from the School of Healthcare (SoH) and the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS) with staff contributing across modules in areas of expertise.

Programme structure
This 120 credit programme comprises 60 credits of compulsory modules providing a foundation level of knowledge and skills (see tables). Next students are required to choose either Evidence Based Practice or Innovation and Evaluation (both 30 credit modules) and another 2 modules (15 credits each) from a list of options.

Students can choose modules relevant to their area of clinical practice and future career ambitions. This provides a total of 120 credits from taught options. To gain the MSc students will also need to complete a 12,000 word research dissertation worth a further 60 credits.

It covers the breadth of contemporary psychological research methods and allows you to develop research approaches to studying psychology, from the level of social groups through to neuro-imaging of brain activity.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our MSc Research Methods in Psychology programme is designed to provide you with expertise in psychological research methods appropriate for the behavioural sciences.

You will develop the skills necessary for critically evaluating research, formulating innovative research questions, conducting empirical research, and analysing, interpreting and reporting research results.

Clinical and Health psychology involves applying psychological understanding to difficulties connected with mental or physical health problems. Using this understanding, clinical psychologists assess and treat people of all ages and ability levels who are experiencing psychological distress, behavioural problems or related issues. Students taking the MSc will be introduced to the theory and knowledge that underpins effective practice in clinical psychology, will explore this in relation to a range of conditions, will gain an understanding of the range of research methods used by clinical psychologists, and will conduct their own research project in a relevant area.

Clinical psychology training in the UK involves the completion of a three-year training programme leading to a doctorate in clinical psychology and eligibility to apply for chartered clinical psychologist status. The training is funded by the National Health Service (NHS) and almost all trainees go on to work in the NHS after qualifying. Entry to these programmes is highly competitive and applicants must have good academic and research skills as well as relevant work experience, usually two years in a paid, full-time assistant psychologist position or equivalent. The MSc aims to provide students with a profile of academic knowledge and research skills which, combined with relevant work experience, will equip them to make a credible application for clinical psychology training, either in the UK or elsewhere.

About the School of Psychology
The School of Psychology at Bangor, which was ranked in the Top 20 in the UK in the most recent Research Exercise Framework with 89% of research rated either 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent', brings together a large group of outstanding scientists with international research reputations in clinical psychology, neuropsychology and clinical and cognitive neuroscience. A number of staff also hold appointments as consultant psychologists or medical consultants with the NHS and contribute to clinical practice as well as to the training of clinical psychologists, medical students and NHS staff. The School runs its own clinical psychology training programme, leading to the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

Key research strengths within the clinical psychology domain include dementia, neuropsychology and rehabilitation, learning disability, developmental disorders, addictions, and cognitive-behavioural approaches. Close links with other departments and with NHS services produce tremendous opportunities for collaborative clinical psychology research. The School supports the practical implementation of research findings to improve patient care by hosting groups such as the Dementia Services Development Centre Wales.

The School has an extensive library of psychological tests and measures. Participant recruitment is facilitated through the availability of research panels for neurological patients and people with dementia, as well as student and community participation panels, supported by the School’s full-time patient co-ordinator. The School has a range of specialist laboratories and researchers in the School use a wide range of the latest techniques for understanding brain-behaviour relationships, including functional brain mapping with event related potentials (ERP), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

The School has a vibrant, diverse postgraduate community. Students on our MSc programmes are drawn from a range of backgrounds and nationalities. Course Structure
The course includes three components: content modules, research methods modules, and a research thesis. Content and methods modules are all 20 credit modules and the research thesis is worth 60 credits. Students achieving 120 credits on the taught modules, but not completing a research thesis, may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma. The content modules are designed to provide an in-depth look at theory, evidence and practice in clinical psychology.

The course lasts one full calendar year if taken full-time and is also available part-time. During Semester 1 and Semester 2 you will combine taught modules with work on your research project. During the summer period all your time is devoted to completing and writing up the research project.

A variety of teaching approaches are used including lectures, case presentations, small-group sessions and seminars, and individual or group supervision. Assessment will include coursework and examinations, and the research thesis.

They should hold current registration with an appropriate regulatory body and meet NHS Trust workforce requirements. Normally have a first or upper second class degree in their area of professional practice and have a least one year of clinical practice experience (or part time equivalent). Candidates should normally be working in an NHS Trust which is prepared to maintain a relationship with the student during the course, in particular to provide an environment for the student to undertake their clinical research project.


There is increasing demand for high quality clinical research to underpin practice, and exciting new career pathways are available for suitably qualified practitioners to lead and develop this research provision.

This course is based in the vibrant research environment of the Clinical Research Centre and provides broad clinical research training for allied health professionals, midwives, nurses and other professionals working in a clinical environment. The course is suitable for clinicians wishing to pursue a clinical academic career and conforms with the NIHR framework for this level of study. Clinicians will be prepared for a leadership role in research and may be able to progress to doctoral-level studies.


Course structure:

As a research degree, the research component is greater than the taught part of the course. The course is made up of four taught modules in the early part of the course, and a supervised clinical research project.

The taught component involves a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops, and the research component is supported by a series of workshops and individual tutorials.


Areas of study:

A wide-ranging introduction to qualitative and quantitative research design and analysis in healthcare is covered. In addition to this, students choose to study specific research methodologies in depth, allowing them to focus on those of most relevance to their clinical practice and research interests.

In order to undertake and lead research in the modern NHS one of the core modules focuses on areas such as public and patient involvement in research, the production of evidence to support decision-making by policy makers, the legislative requirements of undertaking clinical trials and the ethical and economic issues influencing clinical research.

The supervised research project gives students the opportunity to undertake a piece of clinical research within their own clinical area. This allows the research undertaken to directly contribute to the student's current clinical practice and feeds directly into the service provision.

Course details

You’ll cover the whole spectrum of psychological research skills and most research methods used by psychologists, and have the opportunity to study methods that are particularly relevant to you. We aim to equip you with high-level research skills and give you the opportunity to apply these skills in original psychological research. Early in the programme, you’ll begin a substantial independent piece of research and continue this throughout the year. Special emphasis is placed on practical research skills and communication - these are integrated in project work to achieve professional standards of psychological research. If you study full time the programme lasts one year starting in late September and involves attendance for at least two days a week over two 12-week teaching periods. Successful completion of the taught modules leads to the postgraduate diploma award. If you want to study part time please discuss your requirements with the Programme Director.

Students have successfully used the Research Methods in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience qualification to gain positions on PhD research programmes. Others have successfully gained employment as Research Associates/ Officers, as well as working in Teaching positions, the Business Sector and in Administration.

On completion of the Research Methods in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience course students should also be able to demonstrate their employability across a range of disciplines within cognitive neuroscience and related fields, including psychology, computing, neuroscience, medicine and computer science.

Course details

The MClinRes will be delivered by blended learning, in one year full time or on a part time basis.

Pathways in this programme will include four core modules: applying evidence to practice, project design for research, applied qualitative research methods and applied quantitative research methods, as well as the research dissertation. Choose a 20 credit optional module from the diverse array on offer in the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences. The core modules build on each other providing skills in literature searching and implementing findings to the workplace; designing research protocols; understanding applied qualitative and quantitative methods and undertaking a clinically-relevant research project.

To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits by studying three core modules worth 20 credits each. To gain a postgraduate diploma you will need to earn 120 credits by studying the four core modules, the optional module and an additional module from the MSc Advanced Professional Practice. To be awarded the full MClinRes masters, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits - you’ll study the same modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 80 credits coming from your research dissertation.

Cognitive Neuropsychology pathway

This programme is intended primarily for graduates in Psychology, or closely related disciplines, who want to pursue further academic research (MPhil/PhD) in experimental psychology or neuroscience; to teach in higher education; or to develop further knowledge for clinical careers involving work with brain-damaged patients or people suffering from developmental cognitive disorders.

During the course of the MSc, there are opportunities for some students to gain highly relevant clinical experience through case demonstrations and voluntary/paid work at the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre and Neurodisability Service or in one of the several clinical sites we collaborate with. In some cases, there may also be the possibility of carrying out research for your dissertation in these clinical settings.

Assessment:
The programme is assessed by written examinations, coursework, an oral presentation, journal club and a research dissertation.

Methods and Techniques pathway

This programme is intended primarily for graduates in Psychology, or closely related disciplines, who want to pursue further academic research (MPhil/PhD) in neuroscience and to teach in higher education. During the MSc, students will receive highly relevant hands-on training in essential methods and techniques used in contemporary cognitive neuroscience research.

Research Project (60 credits)
The project requires you to carry out an empirically or theoretically based psychological project, which can be in any area of Cognitive Neuropsychology, Development Cognitive Neuropsychology, Brain stimulation or Neuroimaging (EEG). You will give an oral presentation of your project in addition to providing a full written report.

Assessment:
The programme is assessed by written examinations, coursework, an oral presentation, journal club and a research dissertation.

Skills

The programme will provide you with knowledge of theory and practical issues relevant to neuroscience and clinical psychology in the UK health services and research centres. The two pathways allow students to shape their study plan according to their interests and career objectives. You will have the opportunity to develop your own research project under the supervision of a member of staff and relevant external clinical/research sector staff.

This programme is intended primarily for graduates in Psychology, or closely related disciplines.

The Cognitive Neuropsychology pathway is aimed at students who want to develop further knowledge in clinical cognitive disordersto apply to UK clinical doctorate programs or to students who want to pursue further academic research (MPhil/PhD) in experimental psychology or neuroscience.

The Methods and Techniques pathway is mainly addressed to students who want to apply for a research doctorate (MPhil/PhD) in cognitive neuroscience and related disciplines.

During the course of the MSc there are opportunities for some students (Cognitive Neuropsychology pathway) to gain highly relevant clinical experience through case demonstrations and undertaking clinical activity at the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre and Neurodisability Service or in one of the several clinical sites we collaborate with. Students on the Methods and Techniques pathway will be able to acquire valuable “hands-on” experience and build a research portfolio by means of ad-hoc tutorials, research projects and workshops on some of the most recent cognitive neuroscience techniques (mainly TMS, tDCS, EEG).
