In veterinary management of animals, anaesthesia (rendering animals unconscious to permit procedures) and analgesia (reducing the pain an animal is suffering) have vital importance in improving animal welfare, as well as permitting the ongoing developments in medical and surgical advances.

Knowledge and advances in anaesthesia over the last 20 years have been considerable. We can use techniques to block sensation locally or over a region of the body not just total unconsciousness. We have an array of drugs and methods of drug administration available to us in our fight against pain. Anaesthesia has always carried risks, and we have an increasing availability of monitoring equipment to help us monitor the physiological function of the body during anaesthesia with the aim of reducing morbidity and mortality in our animals.

The University of Edinburgh is offering this unique opportunity for an entirely online MSc to study these advances, during which students can gain knowledge and understanding in the equipment, drugs and techniques associated with anaesthesia and analgesia. Our team can provide a wide range of clinical and research experience across many species.

Online learning

Expert tutors will support you through every stage of the programme and you can engage with fellow students in supportive and constructive online networks.

Your progress will be assessed through online presentations, essays, critical reviews of literature, student self- reflection activities, short-answer questions, scientific posters, group wiki events and peer review activities.

Programme structure

The programme is taught part time over 3 years, but its flexible nature will allow you a maximum of 6 years to complete it. There are also options for studying for a certificate (1-2 years) or a diploma (2-4 years).

Each year will consist of three 11-week terms, structured into two blocks of five weeks of study, with a week in between for independent study and reflection.

The Postgraduate Certificate year (Year 1) starts with a series of compulsory courses to give a foundation in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, then progresses to examine how this may be applied in a variety of species. In the Postgraduate Diploma year (Year 2), you have the choice of selected courses to tailor the programme to your requirements. A dissertation completes the final year, however, this is a very flexible course, which can be tailored to suit you (subject to approval).

Year 1
Compulsory courses:

Basic sciences in anaesthesia and analgesia
Anaesthetic equipment
Patient assessment, critical incidents and cardiopulmonary resuscitation

You will also choose 2 out of 4 species-related courses in dogs and cats, equidae, ruminants, camelids and pigs or small mammals (e.g. rabbits, rats etc).

Year 2
You will choose courses to total 60 credits from the following:

Emergency case management (10 credits)
Chronic pain and advanced analgesic principles (10 credits)
Advanced cardiovascular procedures and monitoring (10 credits)
Lung ventilation and mechanical ventilators (10 credits)
Reptiles and birds (20 credits)
Ethics in veterinary anaesthesia: animal welfare and euthanasia (10 credits)

In addition, you could choose to select additional species courses from Year 1.

Year 3
During the written reflective element of the programme you will have the opportunity to further develop your scientific skills and utilise scientific theory. The form of the dissertation may vary to suit individual candidates, subject to approval of a submitted proposal. The dissertation will be a piece of written work 10-15,000 words long, which may take the form of a research study, analysis of techniques used in previous clinical work or an extended literature review. A casebook or portfolio submission may also be permitted.

Career opportunities

The MSc Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia is likely to be desirable for veterinary surgeons seeking employment in research environments (e.g. as Named Veterinary Surgeon or other roles) due to the key importance of anaesthesia and the emphasis on this from Home Office regulation of research work in the UK.

The MSc will be a different route for progression for veterinary nurses who have key roles in private veterinary practices with regard to veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia. This may be desirable for practices wishing to show a wide range of expertise amongst their staff and patient support for surgical procedures.

The programmes are flexible and modular, covering a range of subject matters relevant to anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain. Credits from the component modules can be combined to provide a postgraduate certificate, diploma or master’s-level qualification. You study the central aspects of evidence-based medicine and research, and how to apply these to your anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain practice to enhance the quality of your individual clinical practice and broader service delivery. You share a number of modules with other master’s-level programmes giving you many opportunities to mix with other students and share academic and professional experiences. The learning and teaching strategy is as flexible as possible. You can choose to study by attending classes, by distance learning or flexible learning (a combination of attendance and distance learning).

For attending students, learning and teaching methods include key lectures, seminars involving group discussions and structured learning activities, practical computer lab classes and tutorial support.

For distance learners our virtual learning environment provides you with interactive structured learning materials such as written learning materials, narrated PowerPoint presentations, and structured learning materials and activities. This programme is intended for existing health care practitioners or graduates with a science background who wish to work as part of the anaesthetic team.

The Physicians' Assistant (Anaesthesia) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme will develop a practitioner role that enables the anaesthesia team to have more staff working differently. Presently in the UK only doctors who have had specialist training in anaesthesia can administer anaesthetics.

The PA(A) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme is studied over 27 months full-time which includes 24 months of academic study and clinical training, followed by 3 months of supervised practice.

Students who have satisfactorily completed the 120 taught credits of the Postgraduate Diploma: Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) will have the option of transferring to the Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) MSc Programme. Award of the MSc will require the completion of an additional 60 credit Dissertation module, which would take the form of a research project of their own choosing. The MSc is self funded costing £1980 in 2014/2015 (subject to change each year).

It offers the opportunity to develop advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to apply them to management in perioperative practice. You will have the opportunity to develop, through the process of research, advanced practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of managing care and the ability to influence change in the field of perioperative practice.

As a full-time student, you will undertake all taught modules during one academic year, while part-time students undertake modules over two years. The modular structure of the programme enables you to select the most appropriate profession-specific modules and shared or generic modules from a suite of modules within the postgraduate provision of the School of Healthcare Studies.

For clinicians working in general practice, community, hospital and/or university departments who wish to become specialists and leaders in this area of dental care. To increase knowledge about dental care for individuals with special needs and the impact of providing this service for the community.

- Course format and assessment -

Modular programme consisting of 180 credits, as follows:

(i) Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of sedation and special care dentistry, assessed by written examination;

(ii) A clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients;

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. The three year course provides specialist oral surgery clinical training. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

-Soft Tissues (Cysts, mucosal disease, premalignancy and malignancy)
-Salivary Tissue, Pain and TMJ (Salivary gland disease, facial pain and disorders of the temporomandibular joint)

You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and some invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills. If you study the full three year MSc you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Aims

The course aims to:
-Provide dental practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake oral surgery in the context of wider knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery
-Provide you with the appropriate knowledge, understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and attitude to practice oral surgery in selected cases
-Enable you to carry out critical evaluation, problem solving and use sound judgement for clinical problems
-Give you the knowledge to criticalyl understand the issues involved in the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery
-Ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research at the forefront of current dental research (including data collection and statistical analysis using appropriate computer software)
-Provide you with the knowledge and experience to plan, implement and complete a research project showing initiative and personal responsibility

MSc courses are designed for dental practitioners who wish to further their knowledge of surgery and are a useful foundation for specialist training in this field.

The programme can contribute the first two years of your clinical training and if you successfully complete an optional third year of training -which is available through competitive entry - this can lead to Membership in Paediatric Dentistry of The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and full active membership of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry.

Programme outline
On this programme you will have extensive clinical, formal teaching and will complete a supervised research project. All the taught and clinical mod in the programme are core modules but you will have considerable choice in selecting a topic for research project.

You will undertake the care of child and adolescent patients to gain experience and prepare for your case presentations in your final examination. An important feature of the programme is that you will also participate in medical clinics held in the main hospital. You will also attend specialist clinics such as cleft lip and palate, and developmental disorders.

From the basic biology of neurons through to complex processes of perception and decision-making behaviour, we address how the mind, brain, and body work together and translate this knowledge into clinical applications for patient benefit.

We offer MPhil supervision in the following research areas:

Motor systems development, plasticity and function

We conduct clinical and preclinical studies of normal and abnormal development and plasticity of the motor system. We run functional studies and computer modelling of motor system activity throughout the neuraxis. We also research the development and assessment of novel therapies for motor disorders/lesions including stem cell and brain-machine interface.

Visual system development, plasticity and repair]]
We research the development and assessment of novel neuro-technological approaches to retinal dystrophy repair including brain-machine interface and stem cells. We use in vitro approaches to look at retinal development and visual system wiring.

[[Neural computation and network systems
We conduct experimental and theoretical (computational) studies aimed at understanding how neurones throughout the brain interact in localised networks to compute complex tasks. Our research looks at the role of network activity in a wide range of neurological, neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders.

Auditory neuroscience

We conduct clinical and preclinical studies aimed at understanding the brain mechanisms involved in detection, discrimination and perception of sound. We are interested in how these mechanisms are affected in individuals with brain disorders, including dementia, autism and stroke.

Pain

Our research focuses on:
-Understanding mechanisms underlying pain, analgesia, and anaesthesia
-The development of methods to assess pain and to alleviate pain in animals and humans

Psychobiology

We conduct studies in laboratory animals, healthy volunteers and patient populations investigating the mechanisms underlying mood, anxiety and addiction disorders and their treatment. Allied research looks at normal neuropsychology, and the physiology and pharmacology of neurotransmitter and endocrine systems implicated in psychiatric disorders.

Neurotoxicology

Our research focuses on delineating the effects and understanding the mechanisms of action of established and putative neurotoxins, including environmental and endogenous chemicals, and naturally occurring toxins.

Forensic psychiatry and clinical psychology

Our research covers:
-The assessment, treatment and management of sex offender risk
-Development and assessment of cognitive models
-Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) treatment for bipolar disorder, psychosis, anxiety and developmental disorders
-Developmental disorders of perception and cognition

Systems and computational neuroscience

We conduct theoretical (computational) and experimental studies aimed at understanding the neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology of vision, visual attention and episodic memory.

Behaviour and evolution

Many research groups take an evolutionary and comparative approach to the study of brain and/or behaviour, comparing brain function and behaviour among such disparate groups as insects, birds and mammals, and studying the ecological and evolutionary functions of behaviour. Much of our work is at the forefront of the fields of neuroethology, behavioural ecology and comparative cognition, and has important implications for the study and practice of animal welfare.
