5 Signs Engineering is Right for You

Deciding to do a postgraduate degree is a big commitment of both your time and money so it's important to research your options and choose a course that is right for you. It can be life-changing and take your career in a whole new direction so it's also something to be excited about!

You might want to just test the waters if you're changing your focus from your undergraduate degree, or you might have a five-year plan that you're eager to get through! Either way, if you're thinking about a Masters degree in Engineering, then here's five tell-tale signs that it's the right choice for you!

#1 You have an urge to build and innovate

Are you constantly D-I-Y-ing solutions to small problems around the house? Can you rewire an appliance to do something it didn’t before? You might already be on your way to becoming an accomplished engineer. Engineers are continuously expected to build and innovate whether it be a tiny mechanical part of a machine as a Mechanical Engineer or larger-than-life bridges, roads and railways as a Civil Engineer.

#2 You have an interest in Science and Maths

Engineering is a vast field of study, and you can choose to specialise in a particular subject even at an undergraduate level. The love for Science and Maths, however, unites engineers around the world. No matter the field of study, it always involves a major element of Science and Maths. Some are more straight-forward like the requirement of a degree in Chemistry for a Masters in Chemical Engineering. Some engineering courses require you to have interests in Design, Mechanics or Electronics, all of which still contain elements of Maths and Science.

#3 You are solution-oriented

If you have ever wanted to contribute to solving mankind’s biggest problems, then you’ve found yourself in the right place. Engineers are at the forefront of creating efficient solutions to both big and small problems. You could be contributing to medical science after a Masters in Biomedical Engineering or coming up with solutions to climate change as an Environmental Engineer.

#4 You are comfortable with technology

It should go without saying that as an engineer (especially if you choose to study Computer Engineering or Robotics) you will be working with technology every day so you’ve got to love it! Irrespective of the field of engineering, you will be expected to create a synergy between your core subject and the latest technology.

#5 You are focused on the future

The field of Engineering has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years and continues to grow. You can expect a boost in jobs, investments and focus on engineering no matter where you are. The world is looking to automotive engineers to develop environment-friendly engines on cars and students with a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering for the next generation of smart appliances. If you find yourself thinking about the future of mankind (or a world fit for a sci-fi movie) then Engineering is a way forward for you.
