The Top Five Universities in India

India’s rapid economic growth is contributing to an equally fast development in its university system. With many courses taught in English, India is a great accessible option for international students wishing to study in Asia.

To show you what India has to offer we’ve used the most recent data from Times Higher Education world rankings to look at its best performing universities. By breaking down their scores, we can see what makes these institutions appealing for postgraduate study at all levels. All scores are out of 100 and you can read about THE’s methodology on their website.

#1 Indian Institute of Science

First up on the list is the Indian Institute of Science. India has put a lot of funding behind their institutions of Science and Technology so it is no surprise IISC is a top performer. Founded in 1901, IISC runs as a public university in Bengaluru with the aim of training future leaders by applying academic breakthroughs to India’s wealth creation and social welfare efforts.

Within the rankings, IISC achieved a 59.1 in teaching and an 88.1 in industry income, which assesses the university’s ability to help industry with innovation. On top of this, in 2018 it was selected as an Institute of Eminence by the Government of India.

#2 Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar

Next up is the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar. This university aims to foster a transformative learning environment to enable the creation of knowledge, development and socially responsible leaders. Academically, the institution takes a ‘bottom-up’ approach when formulating their vision, putting students at the heart of what they do.

Out of all the scores, the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar was most successful in citations, receiving a 99.7. The citations category assesses the ability of the university to spread knowledge and ideas based on how often academic works from each university have been cited. Given the high score, it’s clear that the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar is highly active within the research community, making it a key place for postgraduates to thrive.

#3 JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research

The JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research comes in third. Located in Mysuru, Karnatake, JSS is not actually a university but is a ‘deemed-to-be-university’. This is a specific Indian accreditation that can be given to higher education institutes that operate at a university level standard in a specific area of study. JSS specialises in subjects related to Medicine, Pharmacy, Life Sciences and Health.

Although only third on the list, JSS achieved a score of 100 in citations and received the highest score for international outlook among the other listed universities. Although only established in 2008, the institution already boasts a wide range of international tie-ups with universities, benefiting both students and facilities. Additionally, generous financial schemes make this an interesting and supportive environment for postgraduate students wishing to study JSS’s specialist subjects.

#4 Indian Institute of Technology, Indore

In fourth place is the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. Set up in 2009 as part of the government’s initiative to become a world leader in Science and Technology, Indore only got a permanent campus in 2016. Although a young university, their growth has allowed them to rank highly within the country.

Achieving the second highest scores among Indian universities for teaching and industry income, Indore proves itself to be a competitive university for postgraduate students wanting to make a visible difference within industry. The university aims to promote interdisciplinary research to create impacts in key areas such as climate change and sustainability. They were also ranked second in India for their Computer Science department and show great potential for the future.

#5 Alagappa University

Finally, we have Alagappa University. Located in Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, Alagappa was founded with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge into various branches of learning. Those looking to improve education systems should consider this institution.

They received a 75.2 citation score and were the second highest Indian institution for international outlook. With 41 international exchange programmes, Alapaggapa is a host of opportunity for ambitious postgraduates.

Each of these institutions have something unique to offer postgraduate students. While the world-rankings can be a good way to begin your search, there are a lot more factors to consider such as your subject, cost of living and way of life.
