There are many reasons why nearly 500,000 international students chose to study in the UK last year. The UK is home to a thriving arts and entertainment scene, English is the language of global tech, commerce, and academia, and the UK has plenty to boast in terms of its natural beauty, elite sporting events, and its multicultural cities. Moreover, many of the world’s best universities are found in the UK and it is not uncommon to be taught by the academics who actually wrote the textbooks you are learning from.
However, for many, the dream of studying in the UK seems unattainable due to the cost of international student fees and accommodation. In order to ensure that the best and the brightest international students still have the opportunity to study in the UK, the UK Government runs an international scholarship programme called Chevening.
Chevening offers future leaders the unique opportunity to study in the UK. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, these Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year Masters degrees in any subject at any UK university.
With our world facing countless challenges, Chevening is looking for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and the leadership we need to create a better future.
Because the scholarships are fully-funded, Chevening Scholars are free to focus on achieving their academic and professional goals, whilst enjoying the experience of a lifetime in the UK.
During your year in the UK, scholars are exposed to a range of exclusive events, networking opportunities, and trips across the UK. Previous scholars have visited 10 Downing Street, hiked up Mount Snowdon, exhibited art in London galleries, interned at the BBC, volunteered with the elderly, debated at the Cambridge Union, and sat in the home dressing room at Anfield. All this, whilst studying on intense Masters courses.
‘Chevening doesn’t just open doors, it opens your mind,’ Louise Thomson, Chevening’s Head of Programme Management, said, whilst highlighting that Chevening puts applicants in control, as they are free to choose from thousands of Masters courses at over 150 different higher education institutions.
Scholars learn about their subject matter, and about the UK, but – most of all – they learn about themselves.
We hope that this challenging but enriching year studying in the UK will inspire new ideas, empowering scholars to return home better equipped to bring their ideas to life.
The programme was established in 1983. Since then, over 50,000 outstanding professionals have had the opportunity to experience the UK and develop their careers through Chevening.
Many influential Chevening Alumni have made positive contributions to their countries or professional sectors since concluding their studies. In 2019, we celebrated 35 of them in a photography exhibition held in London.
